Yes, this has happened to me as well while taking the generic forms. After reading this article, I checked the manufacturer of the one I was taking that had ZERO effect. It was from Aurobindo. I just filled a script with North Star and I feeling a slight difference. Whoever wrote this should investigate further. Brand name is almost $700 for a month supply of the 1mg without insurance.
Yes it seems several of us have posted reduced efficacy with some of the generics. In my case the Northstar brand seems to work as good as Glaxo however the Mylon brand was useless for me.
I will have to look at bottle when I get home, but pill is large and dark blue. I have had the same experience as many others. Valtrex name brand worked perfectly. I take the generic once or twice every day, but with very frequent outbreaks still
I have used Valtrex (1000mg 2 pills twice daily) for cold sores and it has worked perfectly. The Mylan version is ineffecttive. I took the same amount of the generic version even BEFORE the sore came out and they got worse!
I have the same problem. The generics do not work nearly as well. One in particular was white with the numbers 1 2 3 written on it and it did not work at all, I cannot remember the manufacturer, sorry. I had my pharmacist change the manufacturer and I am now using Northstar, it seems to be working much better but still not as good as the Glaxo Valtrex. I cannot remember getting any outbreaks for several years when using Glaxo though I would get little red dots in other areas on my skin when exposed to sun.
I've had HSV-2 for over 20 years and started using Valtrex daily a few years back.
The brand name Valtrex works perfectly for me (500mg daily). Just about perfect remission over many (many!) years. When available at the mail order pharmacy, I switched to a generic. I usually have no problem with generics. The Mylan acyclovir generic I was sent was a colossal failure--multiple herpes outbreaks in less than two months. I switched back to the brand name and again had perfect remission. The insurance carrier then changed pharmacies and I was sent the Teva generic by the new pharmacy. Teva acyclovir is great--perfect remission again for the last year. I have not tried the other generics, but I will never again accept the Mylan generic. I reported my experience and had a couple of long chats with a pharmacist who interviewed me, but I don't know what happened to my report after that. I don't know what is different between the Teva and the (terrible) Mylan generics.
So where did you get the acyclovir by the manufacturing company Teva. I can't find anything that works for me since Ranbaxy was taken off the market.
Mail order pharmacy just happens to carry Teva brand generic. If I don't get Teva, I ask for the doctor to prescribe "brand name only" so that I get the original. I have on the record that I cannot take the Mylan generic for this drug (though I don't know that they read the details when filling the prescription). I recently heard that the coating of a generic is proprietary, although the medicine inside needs to be effective. I speculate that the coating is somehow not dissolving correctly or dissolving too early and the medication inside is being released in the stomach and being partly destroyed, and therefore the medication is not performing to full effect. Not a pharmacist or medical professional, just a consumer with an imagination.
I was taking Valtrex brand name with wonderful results. Then the generic came out and they gave me that. I only take it when I have outbreaks. I started taking Valacyclovir and it didn't work at all. I asked the pharmacist what to do and they said to double up on my dosage. I did and it still didn't work. I had to go back to the brand name. My insurance doesn't pay anything on the brand name. I am wondering why I have to pay for the brand name when the generic doesn't work. I wrote Mylan today and will wait for a response. I also contacted an attorney to see if there is anything I can do. I am sick and tired of being forced to pay higher rates when it isn't my fault that it doesn't work. It is supposed to be the same by law I think. I have take other generics that don't work too. I say we all file a lawsuit and stand up for ourselves, even if it is a class action lawsuit. We deserve to expect the same results, general or brand.
I was using the generic version (1 mg/day) from manufacturer Aurobindo (1 gm - dark blue capsule) and then got it home delivered from another generic manufacturer --Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (light blue capsule) in the same dosage and started to break out 9 pills into it. Needless to say went running back to other pharmacy and got back on Aurobindo -- waiting for relief. Same thing happened with generic levothyroxine (thyroid medicine) v. brand (synthroid). thank God this condition requires constant blood draws to monitor levels. Within 6 months my doctor was frustrated because my levels went from too low to dangerously high until i went back on the brand. Why do they give us these generics when they know this can happen? I friend of mine's dad is a pharmacist and he said the FDA allows a 20% variance. So you can go from 80% of the main drug that's treating you to 120% of the drug!!
I also had the same thing happen to me... the generic made by Aurobindo is the ONLY generic that works for me. However, I do need to take double doses sometimes. Brand Valtrex was the best. I hate generics... wish we were able to take what works without taking a second mortgage out on our homes!
I think that Hellothere34 wanted to know if other people were experiencing the same problem which is the effectiveness of the valacyclovir. I'm sure we all know what generics are and most of us have probably taken them for years. However, when a generic medication worked in the past and then you see a major change, such as increased outbreaks, then it makes you wonder what's going on with the manufacturers of this medicine. I used the name brand Valtrex for a few years and my outbreaks were under control. I noticed in the past few months an increase in my number of outbreaks. My doctor increased my generic valacyclovir to 1,000 mg 2x day and it made zero difference. My doctor has now prescribed "medically necessary" Valtrex and hopefully that will help. I think the second part of Hellothere's questions was for alternatives... which there doesn't seem to be much.
I tried generic Valtrex and experienced the same ineffective ness as others. I had to go back on brand. However, even though I have insurance, I still have to pay $10 a pill (1gm) that I need to take daily for maintenance. This has put me in financial distress. I pay est 3000. Out of pocket and make under 30k/yr. Why can't they make generic work like the brand?!
I am also having a bad experience with Mylan Valacyclovir Hydrochloride with the M123 on the pill. Prior to switching to generic I was using Valtrex with only one tiny outbreak in almost a year regardless of diet and stress levels. After switching to generic I feel like I'm about to break out all the time and have broken out a few times in just a one month period.
My insurance won't cover herpes meds so I'm going to have to eat the 300 extra dollars a month for actual Valtrex. If anyone knows where to get it cheaper please let me know, right now the best price I've found is at one of the wholesale clubs.
I have taken the brand name 1G for years w/ success. Recently (due to loss of insurance) I opted to try the generic-apparently mine is from Mylan has M123 on caps. I have only been using the generic a short time and have already been experiencing issues with it.
I read the other posts & although I understand their irritation on one hand. I for one am thankful to hear the information from one who is well educated in generics. There are small differences in the binding material etc. And I have found difficulties in using generics for some other prescription treatments as well. But my husband (who by the way has NO prescription meds) insists the generics are
exactly the same as the name brand & is certain generics in all areas would perform the same as the name brand does for me. I do remember many years ago also trying the generic acyclovir & my doctor switched me back to the Valtrex. But after reading there was new progress in the generics & with some reduction in costs I decided to try the generic about a month and a half ago.
I have experienced the same results as u have- but fear everyone will tell me I'm crazy.
I am also concerned as they automatically filled a new med for Hypothyroid medication with a generic and info I have read on that says specifically do NOT substitute the meds prescribed for this condition with a generic or other without dr. approval. (which I'm pretty sure they didn't get, but at the time of the initial Rx fill I had insurance & they would only cover the generic.) I would be interested in your professional thoughts on that as well, if u happen to get back to this to read this, & have the time. (I can't tell what date these were posted)
I'm a little confused by the question since you (mentioned as an after thought) you are a pharmacist. You are asking a specific question yet are looking for opinions. Suzanne gave a very detailed explanation and you (in my opinion) disregarded her answer because you were already aware of the differences (brand vs. generic) Maso is also correct in stating this is a close community where the members support each other and try to help as much as possible. You asked, "anyone else has thoughts on this?" Yes, I do. I would suggest you contact Sandoz and request data regarding any complaints they may have received about the generic form of Valtrex. I would also recommend you go back on the Valtrex since it seemed to work much better for you. I'm just a consumer. I do not know if Valtrex is even available anymore.
So if there is a medication that worked better for you, pay the extra money and put your mind at ease about the outbreaks. And as Maso suggested, please contribute to this forum in a positive way as we can always use the advice of a pharmacist.
You are very right Chris we are a very close community... See If I were a Doctor which I am not, I would ask this way Hi I am a Doctor/Speciality (identify myself) and I am doing some ... research... etc
This is the proper way a "professional" would do it, and not fall into a trick question.-
You are a pharmacist/chemist, you should have mentioned this in your question... you know plenty about meds , e.g. is it the same to take Prozac(FANTASY NAME, BRAND NAME, COMMERCIAL NAME) by lilly ( French pharamceutical company) or fluoxetine, I know the difference and I am sure you do too, it is the same thing with all brand names and generics as you musrt be aware.
Prozac(As they called it the miracle drug when it first was introduced into the marketplace) has been clinically tested and approved while plain old fluoxetine have the same action,it takes longer to work and it is not as effective, plus the chemical compounds- excipients that make up generics are not as "clean", as the brand names (commercial or fantasy names).
Same with klonopin, xanax,(benzos) and as you know because the chemical compounds-excipients of the brand names-fantasy names have been tested and are "cleaner" their COST is a lot higher due to effectivity, testing... etc.
Also, I find your question to be inappropriate after you told the person who answered, you were a chemist, do not ask if you know the answer... instead as you are a man of knowledge with medications, help others.
Take care. and please help.
The person who answered your question took the time to do the reaserch , gave you the info... but you already knew the answer, that is not right for the person who helped you and took the time, while she could have been helping someone who really needed help.
By the way she is my friend, and we are a virtual family... this is a sacred place for us. so it should be for you, or do you feel superior?
In your comment you do not even thank her, you are not a gentleman. And this upsets me very much... but I am a gentleman... Thank you.
Try axyclovir, I hope it helps. I truly do---
Just trying to get some "unofficial" data to see if this was a widespread problem - would help me both personally and in my ability to counsel patients - my only question was has anyone else noticed reduced efficacy of generic valacyclovir... trying to get numbers not answers. Some generics hold up better in comparison than others - trying to find how the generics for Valtrex are performing. The only thing I feel superior about is my ability to write non-accusatory posts. Please read what I have asked instead of assuming I am asking something which I did not.
Do not waste my time.

wow some of you folks are really overly sensitive IMO, the person asking the question was not rude or disrespectful or acting superior they are just asking for some anecdotal opinions geez... maybe you need to adjust your medication
Thank you very much... I will adjust my meds as you so kindly suggest... once again thank you.
All the best.
I get it. I do. But don't let things get to you. You choose to be happy, be annoyed, judge, etc. You kinda jumped on this person & I do the same so I'm not jumping on you... But try to remember that you choose your state of mind. :)
Valacyclovir hydrochloride is a prescription medication that is used to treat chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, and genital herpes. It can also be used on a daily basis to prevent recurring outbreaks of genital herpes and to decrease the chance of spreading genital herpes to sexual partners.
Brand-name Valtrex is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. However, generic versions are now available as well.
Generic valacyclovir manufactured by Sandoz ( and other generic companies) comes in tablet form in the following strengths:
Valacyclovir 500 mg
Valacyclovir 1000 mg (1 gram).
All generic versions must undergo certain tests to compare them to the brand-name medicine (Valtrex).
The FDA has assigned an ""AB" rating to the Sandoz generic versions.
An "AB" rating means that the generic valacyclovir version should be equivalent to the brand Valtrex.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
Im a pharmacist and understand the generic protocols but was wondering if this was worth looking into or just an isolated case... I am frankly quite shocked at the apparent ineffectiveness of the drug this past month... Never had an issue like this before - Ive been taking it for almost 2 years
I had the same experience, the generic didn't seem to work as well. Im trying to find out if there is a better manufacturer I can try. Im shocked that the generic doesn't seem to work.
I have the same concern the the generic version of Valtrex is not effective. I've used this drug for years to reduce outbreaks and since I've switched to the generic of had two of the worst outbreaks I've ever had and they've taken much longer to go away.
The generic does not work well at all. I've been taking 500mg twice a day for a week and my outbreak STILL has not cleared up.

YES!!! EXTREMELY LESS EFFECTIVE! I have been taking the maximum dose for a FULL 10 DAYS AND EVERY MORNING WAKE UP TO A NEW PUSTULE! It's VERY frustrating!!
