Hello, I have similar symptoms. My sister has also but worse than me. Upon her Doc's advice, she changed her diet by stopping grains, most sugar and dairy. But it didn't help! Then she heard about Guaifenesin. She gets the OTC CVS version and takes it twice a day. She asked her doc if it was OK to take on an ongoing basis and she said absolutely yes. It's really helped! I'm thinking of trying it also.
I have the same exact symptoms, but have not been able to get any clear diagnosis or been able to prevent it. I've been to GP, ENT and Allergist. I'm going back to the allergist this Thursday. I got desperate one night and stumbled onto Flonase nasal spray. I spray it up my nose and lay down and let it drip down my throat. It gives me enough relief to calm the anxiety I get. Have you ever gotten resolution on yours?
Are you drinking planty of water? Staying well hydrated will help to thin the secretions-this can go a long way in helping you. Be sure to stay away from milk/dairy products as they make mucous thicker. You might see a pulmonologist to be sure that you dont have any kind of allergies or asthma. Sometimes people with chronic cough and thick mucous actually have asthma but dont necessarily have any wheezing at all and you might benefit from an inhaler like Albuterol. If it is allergy related, something like Nasonex or Flonase might be of help.
I have done all of the above in addition to a sinus cat scan and upper GI an esophagram, my pulmonologist put me on an inhaler and it's done nothing. I have eliminated all dairy and also tried several nose sprays, antihistamines and home remedies such as honey and ginger and drinking hot broth and still I have no relief!! thanks for trying though. I also drink tons of water.
Well bless your heart! You do have a tough case!! Allergens are VERY bad all over the country right now so it could be allergy related and if it happens in the Winter it can be from the drying central heat (and dust that it blows around) It takes a while for any of the steroid nasal sprays like Nasonex and Flonase to work so be patient if you havent been on them long. Just keep doing what you are doing. It sounds like you are trying to do everything that can be done. Have you thought of going to a naturopathic Dr? Sometimes when Western Medicine has failed, going to a naturopath is another option. They can take a look at your blood chemistry and also look into food allergy causes and try to eliminate causes and treat things more naturally. I worked for a naturopath for a little over a year and at first I was very skeptical but I saw some very interesting things and learned a lot from the experience. It could be worth a try if you can afford it. Most naturopaths arent covered under insurance.
Over production of mucous is almost always an allergy response. Dairy is usually the most obvious but it must be something else in your case. Have you also consulted an allergist?
I drink water, I try to stay from dairy products. I see an allergist. I have had steroid shots take allergy medicine and use Flonase. I feel like there is something constantly stuck in my throat. I was in the grocery store tonight and the more I walked the worse it got . I was hot so I took off my coat and when I got in the car I took some mucinex. It took a while for this to work. Then I ate a piece of chocolate and it started all over. I know people are tired of hearing me and it makes me short of breath. I also see a GI doctor who has done scopes.
I also have had food allergy tests and all.
I have post nasal drip and I take Atrovent by prescription for it. If I don't my nose drips all day and it makes me cough because it drip in my throat too.
Good luck hope this helps!
