Although there are certain risks to taking ANY medication that is not prescribed to YOU, most of these answers are a bit WebMD (AKA: DIRE). Yes, too much thyroid hormone can increase your heart rate, cause increased bone loss, anxiety, heat intolerance, mood swings, sweating, ect... however, the more major complications occur over time. If you are young and do not have a preexisting heart condition, you will not, most likely, suffer any ill effects from taking it short term to lose weight. It will give you energy, increase your metabolism, and assist you in losing weight. However, please work on developing healthy habits so that when you stop taking the synthroid, you can maintain the weight you have lost on your own. It is also important to seek the advise of a primary care provider.
They may actually write you your own rx for synthroid if you ask?? I do weight loss in my family practice and I know how hard it is for those who have actual thyroid problems to lose weight. Good luck in your effort and in the future, never rely on a lay-website to give you medical advise;)
I am interested in what happened with this? The internet is not providing me with much luck and i have just ordered some levothyroxine (Small dose but still). Did you end up taking them? how much did you loose? and what happened when you stopped?
I don't have a Thyroid problem but even after years of gyming nothing is working to loose the last 14lbs.
I am interested also. When you say ordered pills do you mean got a prescription? If not how so?
I didn't get an answer for this but my tablets arrived and I am on day 2 of 25mg synthetic levothyroxine. I ordered it from America, it came within a week, normally takes 3 weeks. So far not much difference in feeling to be honest.
I made an account just to talk about this (old) question. I stole medicine about 10 years ago from a dog while working at a vet clinic (it got "lost" and the dog still got their medicine too). Dogs take thyroid meds in milligrams, NOT micrograms like humans. I took 0.4mg, then ended up halving/quartering them, for about 4 years off and on, but mostly on.
I am lucky I'm not dead. I AM LUCKY I AM NOT DEAD. I regret 100% my attempts to lose weight ever - whenever I did lose weight, it was because I barely ate and exercised constantly. I was a worse athlete in thyroid meds because it made me feel shaky and gave me heart palpitations. Now, I feel ill and have fibromyalgia/IBD type symptoms and I'm sure it's related to abusing my body for nothing.
Do not abuse thyroid medication. Take it from someone who went down that path (rather than the holier-than-thous who've responded). At 16, I felt like it'd be better to be dead than be fat, but I'm wiser now. I regret the health I've squandered. I wish I'd spent all that energy then talking to a counselor.
For health professionals who are curious, I had a normal thyroid before and now even though I have many symptoms of hypothyroidism now.
There is a drawback to taking Synthroid. I am a Thyroid Cancer Survivor. Half of my thyroid was removed. I have been on it for years. Once you start taking it changes happen in the gland. The gland will effectively go to sleep. That is why the medical community keeps you on it once it is started. It should neer be taken lightly. Some thyroid cancer thrives in high amounts of hormone.
I wouldn't recommend it, however I do know that taking certain supplements can help your body process fat quicker. I have seen many people lose weight (in a healthy manner) with out damage to their bodies. If you are interested in more information feel free to contact me, I would be happy to explain.
Hello. I see this is really an old post but by chance you this this response could you tell me what are the supplements mentioned? Thanks
Readers - I came upon this post accidentally while web search for unrelated topics. The few answers I have read to this question are truly alarming. The majority of the answers are either wrong or dangerously inaccurate. I encourage you to seek medical advice from your health care provider. I am a practicing physician. Dr. Christoffi

I have to agree strongly. Find a physician and get all your hormones tested. Sometimes stress hormones, like cortisone are increased and you will have a hard time losing weight. Definitely do not use Synthroid without suffering from hypothyroidism. I agree with Dr. Christoffi, you are playing with your life just to loose a few pounds. I am also a practicing physician and I can not understand how patient can even get their hands on prescription drugs. There is a reason why one needs to see a physician prior to therapy.
This drug will NOT work for weight loss. It's a hormone taken for deficiency in thyroid hormone production. This drug had SEVERAL warnings to not take it for weight loss as it will damage your heart and kidneys heavily, and has potential for causing heart attack and strokes if you do not need the drug. Please stop taking it immediately and see your doctor.
Thyroid hormone should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal thyroid function. Levothyroxine is ineffective for weight reduction in normal thyroid patients and may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when taken with amphetamines. Talk to your doctor about the potential risks associated with this medication.
Side effects to thyroid pills is bone loss, I have to take them, but I would never take them to loose weight, your going to mess up your system.
I take this and since i started taking it i lost a lot of weight .
but i do have a low thyroid , i would not take this if i didnt have a low thyroid because it makes my heart race .
I cant imagine taking this having a good thyroid level your heart might explode LOL
just kidding .
but in all seriousness , it does not seem right to take this unless your thyroid is low.
i also took topamax i think that is what caused the weight loss as i couldn't eat any sugar i would get severe diarrhea any time i ate sugar .
I wish i could lose weight on my thyroxin tablets i lost a lot of waight then got my thyrodes checked out showed up i was over active then started taking thryroxin now im puting weight on and im not happy about it i have my bloods checked requlaer but I've not herd anything from doctors so they must be happy with my results i don't no what to do about my weight im very active i don't eat 3 meals a day if out i skip meals im a.nibbler do you think i should go back to doctors and mention my weight thanks from Eleanor
Nickki 116, this is possibly the worst thing you could do to yourself. You've written the dosage of each tab is 50mg and this is not possible. The med levothyroxine (generic name, is not capitalized unless it's at the start of a sentence), which also goes by the tradename Synthroid doesn't not come in milligram dosages. The doses are measured in micrograms. That's MICROgrams, one one-thousandth of a milligram. According to you, you take 50,000 mcg and of course that's ridiculous. So please when referring to hormone replacement, these are in micrograms because the gland that normally produce these hormones do so in very minute amounts (micrograms). They are very potent and not much is required to be effective. And, NEVER TAKE SOME ONE ELSE'S PRESCRIPTION!! The word is lose, not loose. Loose is the opposite of tight.
You can Google side effects and long-term effects on your own time, just know that what you're doing is extremely foolhardy. The "friend" supplying you is not a friend and is shorting themselves their medication. Also foolhardy. Lose weight in a more traditional, and safer, way.
I think she meant 50mcg. Easy for lay person to not recognize that.
Thank you, I'm well aware that laypeople don't know "mics" from "migs." And because they don't, they're more likely to make med errors with those meds dosed in mics. This is why I pointed out the gross error. Laypeople need to know know there IS a difference!
You said, "So please when referring to hormone replacement, these are in micrograms because the gland that normally produce these hormones do so in very minute amounts (micrograms)." You should have said produces instead of produce because hormones is plural.
kids_play2, your grammar needs work. "You've written the dosage of each tab... ". This should read, "You've written that the dosage of each tab... ". Also, your comma placement is appaling. Could you please work on this?
You're not wrong, but you're both rude. Please enjoy that grammatically-impeccable statement.
I,v been taking levothyroxine for about 3 weeks and have gained 8lbs, I have other side effects too. This med is doing more harm then help, I,m getting of.

I don't know where you're from but thyroid medication absolutely is measured in milligrams. I have been taking thyroid hormone for 39 yrs. and started with Synthroid and have taken other brands including generic. I now take Nature-throid as it is natural and gives me the best results. I have also worked in the weight loss industry for many years, studied nutrition formally and personally almost continuously. I have gone from hypo to hyper thyroid many times. The things that most people are saying on here are inaccurate. Even though taking thyroid hormone when you don't need it to lose weight will probably not hurt you, it does not result in much weight loss if any. The symptoms you will experience are not comfortable though. The way it can be detrimental to your health would be to combine it with other medications that are contraindicated. Too much can cause heart palpitations, headaches, diarrhea, hair loss, dry skin, anxiety etc.
I've never heard of anyone dying from having an over-active thyroid in the short term. In the long term it can create other health issues. So as not to write a novel here I would be happy to advise the best way to diet with no starving and very little cravings. This is my passion and I've made it my mission to learn the truth and I don't push any products.
What if I wasn't a quick way out? This will do the trick right?
I have qty 180 175mcg tablets and i have plane and simply had enough. I'm thinking if i take a few of these go to bed the rest should sort itself out. Sometimes there are no answers, no resolution, no way out. When a lifetime of getting burned by the system, friends, family had taken its toll someone has to pay the piper...
As the previous answers stated, thyroxine can be VERY harmful if not needed. Loosing weight is so frustrating. I am not judging you in anyway with my next question. What have you tried so far? I am a retired nurse on disability for Fibromyalgia and have to be creative with exercising. I cannot exercise 30 min in a row. I have to work out in intervals through out the day. I eat small meals all day long. If you let me know a little bit more about what you have tried and how you responded, I may be able to help you. Feel free to ask me anything. Very sincerely yours, nursepen
When I hit middle age and moved to a colder climate I quickly put on 10 pounds. I am active and eat pretty decent. My doctor won't take me serious when I talk to her about my weight - she just says you are getting older. It is very frustrating and I can understand why someone would turn to something like taking thyroxine as I ended up on this site thinking about trying to the same thing. I am educated woman and I know the eat smaller meals more often etc etc etc but nothing short of cardio non stop seems to help and I cannot keep that kind of regime up long term. I would be happy for your advice nursepen.
I have fibromyalgia I was wondering how you got on disability. I take lyrica now I have been thinking about talking to my doctor about it but I don't know how to go about it.
First you should learn English so that you would know that you cannot loose weight. You can lose weight if you expend more calories than you take in. Meaning back away from the table!!!
Why is it everytime I look at websites like this there is a nasty person? Go be happy and stop commenting on people who are actually trying to just get help. Come on. Life that miserable?

Right? Mean people suck. No wonder I'm so depressed all of the time. Dealing with mean people.
Learn how to spell (lose), you don't (loose) weight lol.
I'm aware this post is a little older, but i just want to state how dangerous and unhealthy it is to take weight loss pills, even those prescribed by your doctor. Also, pills usually only give you short term results. I take Advocare products which are 100% safe and they have this 24 day weight loss challenge that works wonders, safely! I've done the challenge twice and take product daily. If you're still interested you can go tawnycbrown.com and look at the products and read about them. I can't think of any other way to help you safely jump start weight loss and boost energy than these products.
I am 53 year old ex-diabetic. I have a "inflammation and tendon" condition.
This winter I found I gained more than my usual 10lbs and got called in to the diabetic clinic a full 5 weeks before my usual time.
Lost 14 lbs in 3 weeks, I am 11lbs out and am confident!
I did this thru diet and exercise... "Naturally".

I just want to say as someone who had thyroid problems after my first born i was told at the time that i would never have kids again 3 years later i was pregnant with twins and able to go off of my thyroid medication my new doctor informed me at the time i found out i was pregnant that i had what is called hashimoto thyroiditis so to the person who said once you are on that medication you are on it for life you are wrong i had 3 months left of my prescription when i found out i was pregnant in late 2011 and i have not been back on the medication since
Dude. Take your medicine, if you truly do have hashimotos, that means sooner or later you will die if you don't take your medicine. Hashimotos is when your antibodies attack your thyroid, and mine is almost gone already. Take. Your. Medicine. If you dont, your heart will stop because of lack of appropriate hormones.
Not everyone with Hashimotos needs medication. At some point chances are that your immune system will kill your thyroid. If your TSH and T4 are ok you do not need hormone replacement yet. It is important to get regular bloodwork and ultrasounds done to keep an eye on things.
Hope you have your thyroid levels (tsh) monitored while pregnant as your thyroid need increase approx 25 percent. Hypothyroid levels can cause death, mental and neurological and other issues with the fetus.
I know you posted this may years ago but I hope you will see this. Many years ago I lost 32 pounds in a week had no idea I had a thyroid problem. My thyroid was over working I had enough hormone in my body for seven women later found out I had Hashimoto's and Graves disease which is very uncommon to get get both and let alone a severe case whoever told you to go off of your medication it's completely wrong you can die from that trust me I was there in the hospital for almost a year and almost died! I had to have a full thyroidectomy it wasn't because I wasn't taking care of it it was because it was so bad. I wish I could go back to the way I was before all of this! Things have never been the same with my body! Make sure you watch your babies for it because it is hereditary and take care of it don't ignore it your thyroid does not re-correct itself it is a hereditary disease. Another thing maybe to help you make tge right decision.
I started having multiple organ failure heart problems loss of vision. Yes most of this went away after my full cyber-attack to me but I still have heart issues and my vision has never been the same. Good luck!
I began taking 5mcg of levothyroxine (synthroid) 5 months ago. I found out I was pregnant at the same time. It is crucial to take synthroid as prescribed and get monthly blood tests to check thyroid function during pregnancy. Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid), causes weight gain, muscle aches, brain fog, depression, etc. regulating your thyroid with synthroid can help aleviate these symptoms. It may also help you lose the weight you gained because it helps your thyroid to regulate your metabolism, which was not working correctly while your thyroid was under active.
How do you find out if you have it?
Query On - To find out if you have hypothyroidism, your doctor (usually your primary care doc) will order some lab work. You don't have to fast to have your thyroid checked. The doctor will look at the amount TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) in your blood. If it's higher than normal, and your T3 & T4 levels are low, that means your thyroid gland is hypoactive.
If you do have hypothyroidism, your doctor will prescribe something like levothyroxine, and you'll go back for bloodwork around every six weeks to check your TSH levels, and to see what changes, if any, need to be made to your medication dosage.
Hope this helps!
How do you get your Dr to prescribe these tests? I have all these symptoms and my hair is falling out like I am having chemo, I do not eat for days sometimes and I gain weight, I am always tired, yet I can never sleep. My dam DR never listens to anything I say.
You could end up gaining weight . My thyroid was stable and I ran out of my synthroid and used a larger dose thinking it would make me loose weight and I gained . I suggest if you want to loose, weight do it with a diet Dr or the old fashion way exercise .
Yeah, thanks. If people wanted to do things the "old-fashioned" way, we would. But in modern day times, there's easier ways to lose weight. If there is a quick, easy way to lose weight, I'm not going to choose a long and hard way. That's common sense. But what time OP is doing isn't safe.
I found this old post so I don't know if anyone if following it, but have a similar situation. I am taking Synthroid to loose weight but it is being subscribed a closely followed by my PC. He is doing monthly blood work and exam. My normal tsp blood test was 2.2. He would like it at a 1 to loose weight. He has me taking .25 a quarter of a pill once a day, along with colic acid once a week, and phentermine 375 mg daily. I don't know the results or side effects yet. I start in the morning.
So are you saying that you were off the drug for a while and gained weight then resumed taking it (in a larger dose) and gained weight again or gained more weight?
rob101st ; can you post your results and any side effects if there were any.
Adrenal fatigue, too much or too little of one hormone can cause the release of other hormones to "counter-act" such an effect. Adrenal fatigue is often a complication of a "abused thyroid" but not always.
This will make you feel tired, low energy, insomnia, tremors heart palpation etc... meanwhile your liver kidneys etc are taken a beating.
A lot of middle age people suffer from a "sluggish thyroid"... yes the numbers are ok, however the sensitivity to hot and cold, insomnia, etc are there. Check your temp every morning (when not menstruating) when you first awake, keep a log, TRY A LEPTIN DIET...
Do not know if anyone else is reading this I was on synthtoid. For a year lost 80 lbs energy was great .when I would drink with these meds. Total chaos. The paranoia. Drives you literally insane I can vouch for that was doing things I have never done before and it was not good. I stopped taking them gained all the weight back! Within 6 months I eat next to nothing no I have no thyroid issue was given to lose weight . So today I tried taking again dr. Also gave me phentermine. Noticed in 1 day sensitive to cold and hot paranoia. Lost 12 lbs. One day I also take low dose of Xanax to sleep . Do not recommend this med to anyone also let's not forget causes ocd. Insomnia. Aggressive. Behavior tightness in chest 36.f hope this post helps for anyone using for weight lose Will. Try dukan. Diet and old fashion exercise ♡
Hi, I have had my whole thyroid removed in 2012 due to cancer. Luckily I am ok now up to press but slimming world worked the same for me before and after thyroid removal. I can lose weight still if I want just the same as I did before my thyroid was took out. If you are on Levothyroxine and struggling, try leaving a whole hour gap between taking your Levo before having a coffee or anything to eat. Trust me, this plays a lot with absorption of the tablets.Have water within that hour and nothing else to allow true absorption. You will see your blood levels level out and weight losses. I have tested the waters so can honestly recommend x
