I have been on Zoloft for about five years and it is no longer working. My doctor switched me to Lexapro and recommended taking my 25 milligrams of Zoloft every other day and the start Lexapro. Has anyone ever switched between SSRI's? Is there any harm in swapping them right away to avoid withdrawals from the Zoloft?
Switching from Zoloft to Lexapro?

Hi, Kitty! I've had to switch antidepressants several times in the past and always tapered off one while increasing the dosage of the other.
Starting Lexapro will not prevent the possibility of discontinuation symptoms from stopping your Zoloft "cold turkey" because it will take time for the Lexapro to build up to a therapeutic level.
I would stick with your doctor's advice and do the taper schedule.
Best regards and I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

PS, it's not unusual for an antidepressant to lose efficacy with long term use... we laughingly call it "poop out".
Kitty I have switched many times and I never had a problem. Thats when we need to trust our doctors. But I never switched and then continued to take the one that wasnt working for me but it kind of makes sense. I'm thinking he will eventually tell you not to take the Zoloft. Is that his plan ? But to answer your question it never harmed me switching and I can say one thing Lexapro worked so well for me. I felt on top of the world the first week but after 6 yrs it stopped working for me. I guess when you get old like me alot of things stop working... haha I have taken lots of anti depressants through the years and my very favorites was Lexapro and Prozac. They worked right away and no side effects. What milligram are you taking ? I think (not sure) I was taking 20mg. Hope it works for you like it did for me. Keep us posted as to how it is working for you...
Daisyforevet... have you ever gone back on an ssri that's pooped out on you? I too loved Lexapro, but after 4 years it pooped out on me. Switched to paroxetine for 7 and now that's pooped out. I'd love to go back to Lexapro but will it work???
