I am reading up on suboxone for vicodin addiction and wondering if it is safe to take with my anxiety meds (Xanax XR and Prozac). I feel I have a moderate narcotic addiction (8-10 5mg Vicodin a day; I have seen much worse), but want to wean off of them and only take them for my migraine pain. That was the initial reason they were given to me. Can my PCP prescribe suboxone or do I have to go to a specialist?

You need to find a doctor that is lisenced to perscribe suboxone. Not all docs are. If your pc is lisenced that would be great if not you can look on the internet for doctors in your area. Some docs take insurance and some don't. I paid $125 for my visit but my insurance covers the suboxone with a prior authorization. Do your home work very good to see what your insurance will cover before you come out of pocket. It can be very expensive. But it is worth it. Just think your saving your life!
Thanks for the information.
To be a bit more clear, I take 2mg Xanax XR and 40mg Prozac for my anxiety disorder. I also have a history of migraines and have been taking vicodin. The problem I think I am having is going through the vicodin too much, since it helps with both migraine and anxiety. I would like to wean off of it and only take it as needed for migraines only. That was why I was asking about Suboxone to assist in getting off of it. I am scared, and I always feel better when I have some on hand. But the anxiety is so bad when I run out of the vicodin; this is a sign of dependence I DO NOT like. Any more advice would be appreciated.
Hi
you could try to up the xanax xr to 3mg for the anxiety but your already having a problem with the vicodins and believe me i know i love vics and if i have them pain or no pain. So the question is do you really think you can handle still having vicodins in your house. Suboxone will help you with withdrawals but if you with draw and have vics wil not the same thing maybe or possibly happen. You might have to ask your doctor for something non narcotic for the pain. Subs can be used for pain but usually chronic severe pain. if you use it for a migrain and the migrain is gone you sitll have it in youu system for up to 36 hours later to long acting. touch call, migraines suck but also maybe have someone hold on to your pills for you sometimes that works or just try other medicines you never know. if a medication took your migraines away would you still crave the vicodins, ask yourself that question.
Just wanted to update you on my progress. I finally told my husband about the feeling/desire to take Vicodin for my anxiety. We have a system worked out where I will give him the prescription bottle and he will dispense a certain amount each week, going down 1/2 5mg tab each week. I will start out as the script was originally written, 4 a day as needed. I do not want to be a slave to this anymore. It is only making my anxiety worse. he is very supportive. If it is not working, I will talk to my doc about other options. Hopefully, I will get down to only taking 2-3 pills a month!
Thanks to both of you. You have me the courage to confront the problem and I feel really good about my decision!
I have found that since I am addicted to vicodin I will never be able to use them again. You will have to find a new way or non addictive med for your pain. I've quit before and thought I could just take one for pain after time has passed and my result always ends up the same. I over medicate with vicodin
hi
what dosage of xanax xr do u take, like mit says the tolerance is the issue. if you just want to take the vicodins for migraines does that mean you r going to be taken subs to, i wasnt clear of that. the danger with the vicodins is the acetaminophen in it your taken about 3000mg a day and should get your liver check. subs can be great for opiate withdrawal and for pain, if you do go on subs try to stay at a low dose because of the conversion factor and subs are based on micrograms, 1.2mg of buprenorphine is equal to about 75mg of hydrocodone, i havedone the conversion many times and alot of doctors will prescribe huge amounts of subs for lesser intolerant people. keep asking questions, mits a great erson for solid information and good luck on your journey.
It can be safe as long as you've been taking the the medications for a while and you are tolerant. You will need to see a doctor new doctor unless your doctor has a license to prescribe Suboxone. You can find a doctor near you at Suboxone.com. Although it's not recommend that you take Benzodiazepines with Suboxone most studies have shown that it is safe as long as you stay in close contact with your doctor and describe any side effects you may be having. Most doctors would recommend you get off the Benzodiazepines as well because they can be just as addictive as narcotics. I hope this helps and I hope you get the help you need. Good luck!
