Hi, the active ingredient in Sominex is Promethazine. It states that it should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Either way, you should not use it without consulting your doctor.
Hi, i also wanted to recommend Valerian if your doctor agrees? It is a natural remedy. It will take a little time to build up & for you to notice a difference. A possibility maybe?
Sleeping aid like sominex and Benadryl are ok to take during pregnancy. Typically you should wait till the 2 and trimester if u can. if u really can't sleep a low dose of Benadryl in the first trimester is ok.
Prescription sleep aid probably isn't good but if you are having a really hard time talk to your ob/gyn they will usually prescribes medication in the second and third trimester.

If it is diphenhydramine, that is a pregnancy Category B meaning it hasnt been known to cause any problems in unborn children but there are no really good adequate studies to show what it really does and if it is truly safe. It is best to ALWAYS consult your OB-GYN before you take ANYTHING even over the counter drugs. Just because they are OTC doesnt make them safe. Ask your OB first before you take it and ask him/her what IS safe for you to take. It is not unusual to not be able to sleep when you are pregnant. Sometimes I think it is natures way of preparing you for when the baby comes-you dont get much rest then either and by then you are more used to lack of sleep!
