I have severe restless leg syndrome. I am on requip for about a month and no relief. I also take lyrica, amrix and soma for my back (3 herniated disks). One leg will start and then go away and then the other leg starts. The sensations go from my feet to my hip just to explain the severity of it. I have suffered from this for about 16 years. Is there any home remedies I could try? Are there any medication sugestions for severe RLS? Please help! Im at my wits end!
Any home remedies or med suggestions for severe restless leg syndrome?

Ropinorole. I have severe severe rls. I take 1.25 Ropinorole. Some around 3 then 8 then 1 at bedtime. It is specifically made for RLS.
I have severe RLS also and have for many years. I have been tried on everything under the sun but couldn't tolerate the meds due to side effects. My accident, I realized that OXYCODONE taken at night totally stops my RLS. I had shoulder surgery 6 years ago and found that while on oxycodone, I had no RLS! A neurologist agreed to prescribe me this opioid. I started at 5 mg and after several years, advanced to 7.5 mg. I now take 10 mg and take it at 7:30 p.m. It takes time to "kick in". I couldn't make it through the night without it. Best of luck.
Zweny
Have had RLS for years before it was diagnosed by my Neurologist, have tried all the regular stuff, baclofen taken before sleep worksthe best for me!
Good luck, but make sure you take it an hour before time to try and fall asleep, have sleep disorder also, so there for staring at walls all night. Brain fog in mornings, and tired and achy all day.
Does any one have any clues on muddy brain !
Need help from God, !
I've had RLS for about ten years. Been on requip, now on mirapex. It works most of the time but then there are nights nothing works and my legs just will not stop. I just want to scream . I did read an article about too much dairy makes it worse so I try and stay away from dairy in any form. It does help . I use silk milk, no ice cream, cottage cheese etc. I find when I do indulge in dairy it affects me the next day, not the same day.caffeine also makes it worse so no chocolate or reg. Soda ,coffee, tea etc. I use herb tea .good luck
what does everyone take if they are diagnosed with Periodic Limb Movement and not "official" RLS?
Sandra, my biggest problem is PLMD, with RLS a distant secondary issue, so I feel qualified to respond that for me Pramipexole did the trick. The thing to be disciplined about is to take it 2 to 3 hrs before bedtime and to limit or eliminate stimulants such as caffeine. Everyone reacts differently to stimulants so "your mileage may vary" as they say in the auto industry. I take a glass of wine about an hour before bedtime two or three times a week and that seems to increase (improve?) the effects of the meds but really your doctor should be consulted about your particular condition. Good luck!
Thank you for your follow up post to mine ... but if this is in the same family as Requip I won't be able to take it ... I was started out on Requip first and it made my throat close up ... so now I"m on 1.5 mg of Klonopin that was working great until a few weeks ago, and now it's not helping ... I have e-mailed my doc and asked about an increase and or adding a muscle relaxant to it ... we'll see ... I have PLMD and not RLS ... but they are both frustrating ... from what I was told RLS is painful whereas PLMD is more the motion issues and not really painful ... doesn't matter to me ... it drives me crazy when I can't sleep and need to :(
Hi Sandra, Pramipexole is the generic form of Mirapex. I hope this works for you. but do keep me informed as eventually my organism will become accustomed to the meds and I will have to take a higher dosage. This has happened three times already and eventually will reach max dosage and have to switch to something else. I do sympathize with you about the sleep deprivation, before I went on Pripexole It was so bad i was having thoughts of ending it all. Fortunately here I am, feeling born again!
not sure my sleep doc will go for that med since it's in the same family as Requip and since I had a severe reaction to it, she might not feel comfortable with me trying it ... I will ask her ... when I get an e-mail message back from her ... I did take an extra .5 mg of Klonopin last night and did go to sleep faster and stayed asleep like I did when I first started out ... total dose was 2.0 mg ... how much does everyone else take of this med for PLMD?
I also suffer from severe RLS and PLMD. The drug I use is Pramipexole which is normally prescribed for Parkinsons Disease sufferers. It's worked really well for me. Prior to this I tried a lot of home and homeopathic remedies and nothing worked. I had gotten to the point where the severe sleep deprivation made life unbearable and this drug saved my life. It's the first one I've tried and as my body becomes accustomed to it I've had to increase the dosage. I'm sure at some point I may have to switch to another drug, let that run its course, and come back to Pramipexole to start the process again. When I had RLS/PLMD prior to drugs, it got so bad that it affected both my legs and arms as well, sometimes simultaneously such that it appeared as a convulsion without the associated cognitive dysfunction.
I have suffered from rls for 25 years and the last 5 years became unbearable so decided to try medications. Tried mirapex, requip, gabapentin, etc. They either didn't work or worked for about a month and then got side effects. Because of a dental procedure, I took vicodin and had no restless legs. So begged my dr for a prescription as I had no life with the rls. I have been taking the lowest dose possible at bedtime, have no side effects and no restless legs. Sometimes I will wake with rls and take another dose. I have no craving for this drug at any other time so am not worried about becoming addicted. Hope this helps you. Taking a hot bath also helps, but only when you are in the tub. I know of no home remedies that help and believe me I have researched them all.
I didn't see that anyone told you about Mirapex, which is what ended my restless limbs overnight, literally! Please ask your doctor to allow you to try this medication, and let us know how good that night of sleep was that you WILL get!
I have just started Mirapex 25mg three times a day. I still have the restless leg. How soon does it help? Maybe I should have my doctor increase the dosage. He said one of the side effects is melanoma so I am nervous. I researched it and it said it can happen with peope who have Parkisons disease and are taking Mirapex. I have tried Ropinrole, Lyrica, Simiset, the patch and I am not sure what else.
I have had it for seven years and it is in both of my legs, right side and back. I can't believe nothing will help. Please advise. Thank you
ropinirole
I have suffered with severe restless leg syndrome for twenty years in has been worse over the last 10 years. I have been on many medications without any relief. For the last year I have been taking SIFROL it is initially used for parkinsons disease, and it has given me the best results ever. I used to be troubled all night until the early hours of the morning. Now I may have mild symptoms for about an hour. It has changed my life, I would recommend it, but like all medications they work for some and not others but well worth a try.
I had bad restless leg syndrome. I take gabapentin about 2 hours before I go to bed. It helps with pain, helps me sleep plus no restless legs. Another medication that might work is quinine sulphate. It is useful for muscle cramps and may help with restless leg as well.
My neurologist prescribed both Wellbutrin and Verapamil for migraine prevention (not for RLS) about four years ago, and coincidentally after suffering from RLS for about 25 years (I'm now 43) it miraculously disappeared. I get it only maybe once every several months now. Ask your doctor, maybe one of these meds will help you too. best of luck.
I have tried everything under the sun for rls, i have suffered with this since i was approx. 12yrs old. It has now spread to my hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The only things that have been effective are pain pills. I take methadone, and have taken Lortab with good results. Lyrica i cannot get out of bed for days. You can also use some of the parkison's drugs, the only problem with these is upset stomach, due to them being sulpha based. Home remedies i donot know of any. My sleep doctor is one of the leading researchers in the field, and he knows of none. Some antidepressants have shown to give some relief (temazepam, clonazapm, trazodone. Hope this helps. Go see a sleep specialist.
There is a woman who is a member of the drugs .com team who goes by the name of "beanmarie"! this woman found a great drug by accident that seems to be helping people with restless leg RLS quite a bit. Try to contact Her. Sacosam
After taking many tranquilizers and parkinson's drugs my doctor prescribed Tramadol started out at minimal dose and into 1 yr I was taking the max. He then started me on a very low dose of Methadone and I have been restless leg PAIN FREE for about 3 yrs now. I had to sign all kinds of papers saying that I knew it was an addictive drug but I was ready to try anything. There are many articles about the two drugs used together to treat RLS. Show them to your doctor. Good luck to you.
I have suffered from RLS for over 40 years since I was 9 yrs old and it is very painful, I would love to be free of it but not at taking a drug that is very addicting like methadone. i watch Dr. Drew and I have seen how this drug really messes with you so I am glad you are free from RLS but arent you afraid of now becoming a addict from this drug? Tramadol not to sure of that drug so I am not able to comment on that one. I just know this RLS is very painful and is becoming to be a health issue, so if you can give me some other ideals on helping my RLS I would be greatly appreciative. I hope you the best on not becoming addictive to this other medicine too though My thoughts will be with you.
Because I am a recovering addict and was on methadone for 3 1/2 years and suboxone after that for a year and a half. I cannot take opiets. The requip worked very well but gave me a strange sensation in my legs. But they were calm. I highly recomend it! I am now on a very low dose of clonapin as needed. I take .5 mg when the restless legs start up. I am not good at taking a medication everyday so this works well for me. My fiance holds onto it becuase it can be addictive. So I am safe and use it only when medically nesasary. Out of the many medications I have tried the requip and clonapin work best. As do opiets. But if you want to stay away from addictive meds go with requip. It is for RLS. But if anyone knows of any other remedies please let me know! :)
If requip isnt working. I have a lot of medical issues. I have psoriatic arthritis. My pain doctor has implanted a neurotransmitter about 3 yrs ago. Its for pain and helps alleviate rls also.i know cuz when its turned off .wow the legs start twitching etc. St. Jude put it in and now i have a new one that is controlled with its own apple phone. I dont have to chg it or anything. No drugs are delivered but an impulse to the nerves to confuse the pain from getting to my mind and so far so good. Its not perfect but having rls all over my body its been a godsend. Good luck
Some people find relief by simply massaging their legs at bedtime, or using a electrical stimulus machine on their legs. I had RLS when I was taking Benadryl. It was mild, but still made me feel as if I were jumping out of my skin. Now I take only products with doxylamine succinate to sleep.
I've taken Tramadol. It was given to me after open heart surgery. Fortunately I was only on it for about a month.
TRAMADOL IS ADDICTIVE!
Be very careful if your doctors want to put you on it for much longer than a month.
Ask your PHARMACIST about it. They are the ones with the knowledge about these medications doctors are handing out like candy these days and NOT telling you what they will and can do to you.
Some drugs are worse than others when COMBINED with other drugs, Vitamins & HERBAL REMEDIES.
My relative was given quinine by the GP, this is taken once a day, and does seem to help. If not why not try a natural remedy shop, sure if you asked there must be some kind of natural cure for this condition, I know what a pain this condition is as I do get the same thing myself, and when it is in one leg for a fair time then begins in the other leg it is so annoying, hope you find the answer, would be interested in what does work.
