The gums around my teeth, that have a cavity in them hurt very badly. I have taken Ibuprofen, Tylenol and nothing seems to touch the pain.
How can I relieve extreme tooth pain temporarily, until I can see a dentist?

chewing on garlic glove did the job for me! At first I thought it was not going to work i placed it in between the painful tooth took a bite 30seconds later pain was gone.
I also recommend the mini red cross kit from the drugstore with the mini cotton pads and utensil. It has a liquid (clove) that numbed my tooth so good I swear my eyes watered up from relief. I originally passed this over for the anbesol because I never heard of it . Believe me I tried everything else listed in this forum and this worked immediately and lasted the longest. I am paying it forward as I too needed advice before I could see a dentist for a lost filling. Good luck.
This is an old thread but i do have something to add here. A couple of years ago i had extreme tooth pain and ended up with cellulitis of the jaw. It was excruciating. Once the cellulitis went away with antibiotics and the tooth was still hurting i went to the ER and the physicians assistant told me to take benadryl (the little pink allergy pills) and crush them up in to a fine powder. Afterward add some warm water a few drops at a time until it becomes like chunky toothpaste. Use a Q-Tip and soak the benadryl then put it directly on the bad part of the tooth. Rub it all over the aching gums and everything.
Lidocaine doesnt work for me because i metabolize it too fast, however the benedryl numbs up the whole area.
Goodluck!
if the nerve is exposed AVOID ORAJEL. I learned the hard way. It will make the pain 1000 times worse. the only thing that worked for me is 800mg Motrin or you can take four 200mg tablets. I tried Aleve and Tylenol 3 and they didn't work. at this stage in the toothache you gotta get some antibiotics before seeing the dentist
Rinse with and antiseptic and take antibiotics
Excruciating toothache & can not take NSAIDS what can I do?
I have tried most things, I find sensitive toothpaste and listerine helps and childrens liquid ibuprofen put directly onto the painful tooth
Don't know
Hi J,
I feel for you. Get to the dentist ASAP because toothaches don't go away! It may subside but the cause of the pain is still there.
Before the appointment, write down everything you can remember about it:
When it started, what started it, description of pain -gnawing,sharp,throbbing,burning (it helps them decide if there is nerve involvement),what makes it better or worse, constant and keeps you from sleeping?
Remedies until appointment:
1- Swish the mouth out with warm salt water and spit.
2- use dental floss to dislodge any particles stuck that may be causing pain.
3- use acupressure by rubbing in a circular motion the thumb and tip of index finger.
4- place an ice cube in thin cloth and apply to outside of mouth. Beware... ice may make it worse. If so, use warm cloth to jaw.
5- clove oil on a cotton ball. It only lasts short time.
6- Benzocaine OTC with cotton ball.
7- Bourbon on cotton ball.
8- Peppermint tea bags warmed and squished between teeth.
9- garlic mashed with dash of salt packed into decayed area.
10- onion as above.
11- Hydrogen peroxide swish and spit. It not only rinses the teeth but may attack some organisms causing pain.
I hope these measures are helpful. I'm sure other members will contribute some home made remedies.
Just remember that if, miraculously, the pain disappears, the tooth is not cured. It will come back and probably be worse !
A last thought...
This just happened to my daughter a month ago.
She was bothered by a toothache while at work. She stopped on the way home for Oragel. She came home and made dinner prior to using the Oragel. She described the pain as "electrical" (important symptom) "like I was chewing on aluminum foil".
She immediately jumped in bed with me,writhing in pain and not able to talk. I gave her pain meds. When she was able, she wrote on paper what happened.
I took her to the dentist ASAP. Apparently, she had an exposed nerve and the Oragel made her fly out of control. She got pain meds, a trip to the oral surgeon for a root canal. It was immediate relief.
Moral of the story... If you have electrical or burning sensation it is nerve involvement.
I hope you get an appointment soon.
What helped me was applying oil of oregano with a cuetip to the gum. It seemed to open where the infection was, and it drained, bringing relief. Remember to spit it out. So sorry for your suffering. Good luck with finding what is best for you.
Sadly there's nothing but a dentist if your not careful it can abscess get infected if infection gets wide spread to your heart you could be in danger try using some Clove oil but you need to have it pulled its only going to decay
I don't know.
Is toradol an over the counter medicine ? I'm desperate to find some relief I have been crying in pain for days and I can't get to the dentist soon enough because it's the weekend. Pleaseeeee help me
No
Okay. So I'm no expert but I've recently went through MAJOR dental pain. I had 3 different teeth that would bother me and quite often all at the same time. Before I was able to come up with the money to see a dentist I took a trip to my local drug store. After trying this brand and that brand I finally came across Anbesol (Oral Anesthetic Gel) and it worked WONDERS!!! I would also recommend Excedrin, Advil, or Tylenol to keep the pain away. Use as directed. As far as immediate tooth ache relief I swear by Anbesol. I actually have some sitting in front of me right now!
