My AC1 has been in the 6.1 range for two years. My sugar is usually around 90 - 125.
My last two alkaline phosphatase test have been high and my endocronologist has said it is time to let my family doc tor know about it.
What does this mean for me?
The onloy medicine I take for diabetes is Metformin 500 4 times a day.
WHat does a reading of AlkalinePhosphatase, 167 mean for type 2 diabetic AC1 of 6.2?

Hello Felice. I looked up my med reference page with my clinic. This is something that requires further follow up with your physician. I have no idea what you would need to tell your family since you have not mentioned it. Your reading isn't terribly high but in the area of needing to watch. It can reflect liver problems and various other problems. However, with diabetes on oral meds there can be a testing issue. Please read on:
"Alkaline Phosphatase
What Affects the Test
Learn more…
Reasons you may not be able to have the test or why the results may not be helpful include:
Taking medicines that may damage the liver, such as some antibiotics, birth control pills, long-term aspirin use, and oral diabetes medicines.
Being pregnant. Women in the third trimester of pregnancy have high ALP levels because the placenta makes ALP.
Going through menopause. Postmenopausal women may have higher ALP levels than women who still have menstrual cycles.
Your age. Children normally have much higher ALP levels than adults because rapid bone growth is normal in children and bones make ALP.
Drinking a lot of alcohol."
If any of these apply, you will need to undergo further testing. Your control of diabetes is excellent and I applaud you for that. An A1c close to 6.0 is very good.
There is lots more to read about this and I suggest you check the web with a site like the Mayo clinic for details. Don't freak out over the possibilities because you are on the oral diabetes meds and that is a confounding factor. When will you see the doc again?
If you have more info, more help can be provided. Your age, what the family needs to know and such would be welcome to help in our ability to help in your understanding.

ElizaJane23, you're right, this is a good answer. It also is a good question. I was diagnosed with diabetes about 10 years ago and I have never heard of Alkaline Phosphatase. I know that blood work is done to make sure the liver is okay, but did know the name of it. Thank you Felice for asking the question and enddlessPred for the answering it.
