Hi AzureSngel,
I wouldn't advise using your butt.
The upper body has the most efficient delivery areas. Hairless, away from sweat glands,non-radiated areas. Also it's opposite of what you would think - thin areas are better than fatty for dosing.
One other point, sunbathing is a no-no!
I'm not sure how much education was provided to you.
Heat is dangerous !
The reason being that the body temp gets elevated and the skin absorbs more. You could overdose from the sudden influx of meds!
You will also run short of the 3 days because the patch will empty out sooner.
So :
Fever - Call your doctor
Saunas, Hot tubs, Heating pads, Blow driers, Sunbathing = NO.
Btw... interesting point :
Be careful holding a baby with it on your chest.
Be careful not to allwo your dog to lick you by the patch !
Take care
:-)
as long as the area of the body is on your 'trunk' and 'not higher than your heart' you CAN put it on 'muscle' ONLY IF you have fat over the muscle. the fat cells are how the fentanly is absorbed into your system.
My doctor had to make that really clear with me because i have such a LOW BMI, and i was placing them in places with no fat.
that leaves around my stomach ONLY as possible sites to wear them.
Putting the patch on the upper cheek is working. I have experienced no problems. As for how long I will be on this patch... as short as possible. I have already started a tapering regimen. I had surgery for my issue. Fentanyl saved my life. Now its time to get off of it. Thank you for your comments. I have to say though. The pm doc said simply go from 25mcg to 12mcg and then hold that amount then to nothing except three 10mg oxy a day and hold. B.S. so far, to strong of a taper.
I am on the patch and I don't see why that wouldn't work, especially b/c that area does not move much. I have found that the upper inner thigh is also a good place. I look for other places, especially in the summer b/c some people are so nosy. I have had strangers come up to me and ask if that is the patch for quitting smoking, or even hormones. Make sure it is inside your underwear line or it could rub against it and possible rub it loose. If you give it a try let us know, I am interested in how it works for you. Best of Luck, ChelleKay
During my last hospitalazation, while changing the patch, a doctor was in the room and told me that any where there is muscle is a good spot for absorbsition as long as edges of clothing don't rub on it. I have only tried the upper thigh (inside) to be really good. Used to wear on my stomach, thinking I was putting it on my main pain area. WRONG. Doctor said it absorbs slower on fatty area.. Just saying... Best of Luck, ChelleKay
My doctor explained 'it has to be on your 'trunk' and it has to be in an area with fat'. Without fat it won't be absorbed.
If you have fat around the area at the 'top of your butt', then 'YES' you can place it there. I would NOT put it on my thigh because that is considered an 'extremity'.
Also, curious if you have had any adverse side effects to the fentanyl patch??
It worked GREAT for over a year and then i started to feel like I was walking thru knee high mud, every step or movement was a struggle.
My thoughts started to get the same way. there is actually a condition called 'fentanyl fatigue', so it is quite common. though, my doctor had never heard of it.
Anyway, i tried so many things to counteract that fatigue, drinking Boost for extra protein, taking vitamins, nothing helped, so i had no choice but to stop taking it.
OMG it was the absolute WORST experience in my life. the withdrawals were relentless and horrific. It didn't even start to ease up for AT LEAST 6 months. My arms and legs felt like they were being twisted and muscles on every part of my body felt as if they were being ripped off my bones.
I am ONLY telling you this because i wish someone had told me.
If you have no side effects AND you plan on being on it for the rest of your life, you don't need to worry about it, BUT, if you don't plan on being on it forever, i would seriously look up 'fentanyl fatigue'. if you decide to get off it and try another long acting pain med, 30 mg of oxycontin is SUPPOSED to equal 25 mcg of fentanyl. i made the switch because i NEED to be on meds for the rest of my life.
