Propranolol should work as stated above to slow down your heart rate, which for many of us has the effect of calming us down. It will not have any effect on your state of mind or anxious thoughts. For me, I take a small dose and it’s been an absolute miracle. I hope this helps, good luck to you!
I think part of my question was cut off. My concern is I have a resting heart rate of 45 to 50 beats per min. therefore is it safe to use propranolol due to one of its effects reducing the heart rate.
It depends. Is that what your heart rate is during a panic attack? Will you be taking the medication daily or as needed? I would say if you were told to take it daily your heart rate and the medication would be an unsafe combination. But would defer to the prescribing physician.
Thank you all for your comments.
Alpabravo33, during my panic attack the heart rate is 70 beats per min.
Incidently took a pill friday morning at 08:00 then played golf at 12:30, had a funny turn on the 5th tee. Went home to see doctor, he thinks I had a bad reaction to the drug and it lowered my blood pressure and heart rate too much. He told me not to take any more of the propranolol. I do appear to have a problem between sitting and standing blood pressure reading. in the order of 10-15% differential. I am now thinking do I need to take my blood pressure pills, ramipril.
Hi, Terry!
Your question got cut off... did your doctor prescribe propranolol off-label for your anxiety? It treats the symptoms such as racing heart rate, sweating, stammering, tremors, dry mouth, nausea, etc.
