My doctor prescribed an initial dose of mirtazapine 7.5 to help with insomnia & long term general anxiety. My hope is that it will help me to wean off Xanax extended release (1 - 2 mg daily). Has anyone been successful in using this to help wean themselves off Xanax. Also, for me weight gain is not an acceptable trade-off.
If this drug works, how difficult is it to stop taking it?
Is there a way to prevent weight gain while on mirtazapine?

It can cause weight gain if you don't eat healthy low calorie and exercise. I have never heard of an antidepressant helping to wean off a benzo or at least it never helped me. Antidepressants will take away your depression and anxiety, and I suppose you can try weaning after the remeron kicks in.. good luck and best wishes!
