Hi Ana,
Stephen, for once I have to disagree with you.
I'm NOT saying you have asthma but her rational was correct.
I had severe hay fever until adulthood.
When I was 32 I developed a tickle on my right tonsil, where you have to keep swallowing. It was annoying but no other symptoms until the dreaded dry cough started. I felt like I had to hack up my lungs! I could not cough hard enough. I was pregnant at the time and I was so forcefully coughing that they were afraid for the baby. It was a teaching hospital and they told me 3 interns spent the day in the library! I was treated with IV fluids to hydrate me. Gave me albuterol SANs and Tylenol #3. I couldn't take antibiotics (but no fever anyway) nor prednisone.
I was discharged with cough variant asthma. The codeine broke the cough immediately!
10 years later same thing but pulmonary doc said no to codeine. She did the mega work-ups in her office. She gave me antibiotics (no cough or white count), medrol pack and steroid inhaler in addition to albuterol.
The cough would keep me from eating and sleeping. I was trying to work in hospital and nurses wanted me to go to ER. I couldn't talk and trembling so hard I couldn't get my albuterol out of my briefcase! My next door neighbor (a friend and Doctor ) could hear me next door with windows closed. Medpack ended and for the next 6 months (already 3) I'm on 60 mg a day with no relief. I was too weak from pred to cough and severe costochondritis .
I went back to pulmonary and begged her to intubate me! She says ... I know Hycodan! Within a week it was gone!
Whenever I get a tickle, I've got 24 hours to get the Hycodan. I knock myself out for 5 days, the swelling is relieved and I'm better! I never wheeze... just hacking dry cough night and day!
Asthma ran in my family (moms would sit and talk on old black phone with 6' cord. Lol... but she smoked the whole 6 hour phone call.
You probably have bronchitis. If your pollen counts are high, it may have caused the bronchitis from coughing. He may have heard something while listening to your chest. It's the same principle... decrease the swelling with prednisone.
Ok I will end here because I'm a blabber-mouth. :-)
One more FYI ... I gained 45 lbs and a moon face from those dang tiny pills!
I'll happily defer to your expertise. Thankyou.
I'll gladly hand over the 40 lbs !
Last year, my now ex-primary, saw me for same thing 2 days before going across country on the train. Hundreds of hacking miles !
She gave hycodan but w/o codeine instead Benadryl.
But you are right, too. I said ... I though it bronchitis but COULD BE a cough variant asthma especially if high pollen count.
:-). You are so tactfully sweet!
I really extremely doubt you have asthma. A lot of us here take the same medications for different ailments. Off label use is quite common with some medications that have benefits beyond what they were intended for.
My stepfather took prednisone for 20 years and I can promise, out of his ailments, asthma was never one of them. That woman Caroline, should have known better than to fill your head with doubts.
