Hi,
Went to the doctor yesterday with sinus pain, I was already taking antibiotic for teeth pain (Pen VK 500mg) for 4 days. She prescribed prednisone 50 mg for 5 days, 1 tablet each day.
I feel terrible after taking the tablets, so did not take today, feeling pain in my neck (base of skull and neck area)... is this a withdrawal symptom ? can I stop the prednisone, I just cant take the rapid heart beat, muscle shaking etc. Please help. Can I take ibuprofen for the neck pain ? Will it go away by itself ?
Thanks, P

She told me prednisone was to reduce my sinus inflamation, as she thought this was some viral infection that was causing my sinus flare.

Should be 5mg, call the pharmacy. Somebody made a mistake. Can't take that much Prednisone without a withdrawal plan.
Neck pain is not the prednisone, but could be a response if you took an NSAID. No ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve or any NSAID when prednisone is in your system. It remains for quite a while, even with the one dose. Give it a good week before you do. Use acetaminophen instead (Tylenol).
If you experience continued rapid heart beat, get it checked at the ER, an open clinic, Walgreens or other pharmacy. Also check your blood pressure. If pulse is staying over 100 or blood pressure is high you need to see a doctor right away. Take your prescription bottles with you. Be sure to call the doctor who gave this to you if he has someone on call for him. if not, Let him know the error after you are cared for.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for your response. I am feeling terrible from yesterday, I called my doc today morning and she told me to stop prednesone immediately. Anyways, after taking 2 tablets I did not take any further myself.
But yes, I am feeling unwell continuously, heartburn, hot ears, mood swings, headaches etc. Any idea when these will subside ?
She has prescribed me Amox Clav 875 mg (twice a day now)... does this sounds ok to you ? Please help. Sorry I am a bit scared now after my experience and do appreciate a second opinion. My neck pain has reduced a bit but still there, headaches also still coming and going. I took my blood pressure, its is 112/84 which is prehyper I believe.
Thanks a ton!

Hi Karen,
Thanks for your answer. I did call her today morning, she told me to quite the Pred cold turkey. Anyways, after taking for 2 days, I could not take it anymore, so I have stopped.
I am feeling not well though... headaches, pain/hot ears, heartburn, mood swings driving me crazy. My blood pressure is 112/85, heart beat 74.
She has given me Amox Clav 875 mg twice a day now... what is your opinion on this ? How long will the withdrawl symptoms last ? Will the Amox help me ?
Thanks for your help.

Blood pressure is very good. Need not worry about it. This probably is temporary and not at a level to be concerned. If it was 140/100 or similar, then you should call the doctor. That is a problem.
The antibiotic will help other issues. The prednisone does take time to leave the body. Hang in there for a couple more days. Take Tylenol only and if the neck pain does not get better, it will be time to see the doctor.
The revved up feeling will leave soon. Sleeplessness will reduce quickly. If you are still having troubles by Friday call the doctor. Eat normally, drink water more frequently. Do things to get your mind off of this. The hot flush and shaky feeling is also temporary. You will be fine. I suggest you don't use that doctor again. That was a huge error and the doc ought to have answered all your concerns as well.
Remember to tell any new doctor about the prednisone, dose and your experience. Prednisone makes you sensitive to infection over he next few months. Stay away from anyone who is ill right now. You will be fine. Karen

Actually, it is quite common to take 50 mg prednisone for 3-7 days. Its called a boost. No withdrawal plan. Hope you feel better!

Thanks Athletic. That is a lot of prednisone for the body to handle. But then athletes are a tough group. Us average people have troubles with 5. Lol.

Yes, I would agree with that. I did not go well with that "boost". I felt seriuosly sick and now I am dealing with a GERD. Taking Prilosec and Zantac... hoping I have not developed uclers... scared to be honest with you... I am not going to take Prednisone again at that rate... never...

Prednisolone is different from prednisone. They work on different systems in the body. Call the doctor. These high doses for a few days are very odd to me. Get a better description from the doctor right away of expected side effects and always ask about side effects and when to call with any prescriptionyou get. Read the info that comes with it and check with the pharmacist if you do not have a doctor on call. Now is better than waiting. Also, doses this high are split during the day. Never all at once!

Wouldn't consider it an error by the doctor.. 50mg x5days straight on and straight off is very effective and safe. I have THS and its the only thing that will take the swelling down in my brain when it flares . This type of dose actually in a way shocks your system... Yes depletes the immune system for awhile but will take the swelling in ones body away. So yes it is safe and no the dose was correct. Long term prednisone is used in smaller amount with alternating doses with taper increase and decrease... short term is different and used in this way... Hope that you felt relief

I just finished a 3 day 40mg regimen of Prednisone and just started experiencing the bruised feeling in the exact same spots you had described. That's what led me to this post was my Google search on those symptoms.
There is every chance that what felt like sinus problems was from your dental problems. Please tell me it was a typo when you said 50 mg. That would be one heck of a large dose. And it should be given with each day having less then the day before. And of course the drs are all out golfing since its s holiday weekend. What kind of dr prescribed this.

Yes, she prescribed 50mg for 5 days, 1 tablet each day.
I have not taken the tablet today because of all the side effects I am getting (rapid heart beat, muscle pain etc), so today did not take it (overall took 2 tablets)... 3 are left. But got this neck pain today dont know why...
since I did not take pred today, is it safe to take a ibropfen/tylenol for the pain ? any idea ?
