... for acid reflux. A month later increased to twice a day and the cough quit. After two months I began to cut back to once a day and began suffering heartburn every time I ate anything or lay down. It got better after a month and when hearing the drug is linked to cognitive memory loss I quit taking it. I now have heartburn all the time. Is any of this normal or usual?

Omeprazole is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). I've had GERD for 40 years. PPIs came out in 1990. I'll tell you what I know from experience. Cough can be a symptom that your esophagus is having problems. There's a sphincter (valve) at the top of your stomach that opens and closes to keep food in and opens to allow nourishment. My valve is gone, eaten away by acid. I take 2 Prilosec (Omeprazole) 40mg a day for years. I also take a 40mg Pepcid (Famotidine) H2 blocker. I just did google search for your claim of dementia and Harvard says it's true. (google it). I'm 82 and was tested for dementia at age 80 none found. But I've been having some questionable short-term symptoms. PPIs also diminish calcium so take a supplement. No time here to write a book so I'll point out some help. Elevate the head of your bed by 4" this will keep food in your stomach (a common knowledge with GERD). DO NOT LAY FLAT / PRONE UNLESS YOU'VE FASTED FOR FOUR HOURS (common with GERD). Avoid alcohol, fatty foods, acidic foods... best to search for GERD diet to get ideas on that. I break the rules at times. Protect that valve it's a key to protection. Get a good GI doctor endoscopy is not a terrible experience it's a fast procedure in and out in an hour or so. It's a video of your GI from throat to bottom of stomach. It's not a bad as it may sound, 40 years for me. I've had a beer, pizza, etc. but paid attention to how much / how often, be conservative.
I'm not a doctor; I'm not in the health care industry... I am a patient.
