mineral oil enemas can also leave a residue that will ea back out hours later
best to do a saline enema rinse after a mineral oil enema
The Fleet mineral oil enema is a good thing, especially if youre impacted. I used to occaisionally be given mineral oil enemas when I was young. The key is to instill them very slowly which is why I prefer using a disposable bag or bucket set, with very slow flow (at least an hr for a pt,). Staying in a high enema position (where the hips are the highest point of your body, lying on several, water and oil resistant covered cushions. This can be somewhat imitated with the smaller 275ml Fleet Mineral Oil Enema by keeping the tip in the rectum and the bottle between buttock cheeks and giving a small squeeze every few min, (easier with help).
The nice thing abt oil is its viscosity, or thickness. As long as the oil enema is given slowly the patient often has no sense of fullness or of having had an enema at all. They are much easier to retain than other type enemas.
An oil enema should then be retained for several hrs, even overnight if possible, (be sure to guard against leakage w tissue, or specialty device you can get from health care stores.
After retaining for the desired time, you may have a very oily soft bowel movement, or none at all. The oil's main function is to soften and lubricate feces. Now your entire lwr colon is coated in oil and soft waste.
BE SURE TO TAKE MULTIPLE CLEANSING ENEMAS AFTER THE OIL.
Fleet recommends administering one of their adult phosphate enemas. In my experience, it is not near enough. The small volume of the phosphate enema will generally only clean softened feces and oil from the rectum. You will feel fine, but may wake up with an oil slick on the sheets (no lie, I speak fm experience, when I was young I decided to try fleet oil enemas on my own, a welcome respite from the bowel treatments suffered from medical staff and family members. I didnt rinse, and leaked for 3 days. I was finally taken to the dr, where he laughed and just ordered soapsud enemas.
I recommend at least 2 (probably more) soapy enemas (1 to 3 qts, smaller ones are useless, )(bec the oil coats the bowel, the soap won't irritate much. Prob will want to do a couple more in the am, if you're still gushing or leaking oil in the eve, 2 more. When you are all done and rested take a couple of large tapwater enemas w 1 T salt per qt to prevent dehydration. It sounds like a lot, the key is go slow, never force, and relax. If you have a health care professional that will administer these it is worlds better. I only say this bec last night I was given 2 enemas in the er, 1 fleet, 1 soapsud (I have MS related bowel issues), I hadnt Had an enema in yrs let alone someone else give me one. The nurse and tech were very professional and compassionate, i was able to relax and not worry abt the details. I must say that they were two of the most comfortable enemas I'd ever had. Health pros have a good deal of experience with giving enemas and they know what they're doing.
