First off, the formulation of milk of magnesia is designed to prevent a high intake of magnesium, and your body flushes most of the 1200mg out through the kidneys leaving only a fraction of the mineral absorbed. If taken every day, this can eventually cause problems with the kidneys and urinary tract, as well as the liver and other related organs. It is recommended that individuals over 50 years of age limit their use of milk of magnesia and magnesium supplements in general, and instead drink ginger tea with and after meals to help stimulate bowel activity. A high level of magnesium causes an electrolyte imbalance and can be very hard on the renal system. 300 milligrams is considered a healthy daily allowance and should be derived primarily from food sources.
I have been preaching to everyone how important Magnesium is for the body, and that the American diet is deprived of Magnesium, I just went to my Grandmothers 100th birthday party and I was talking to my uncle about medical problems of family members and I got on the topic of how important Magnesium is and he said do you think Milk of Magnesia has it in it? not knowing for sure i said by the name i would think so!, he said your Grandmother has been taking that every day for the past 40 years so i got the bottle and looked in amazement i saw 1200MG of Magnesium
It is safe to use it often, however it can cause your bloodwork to show alot of magnesium and you will become dependent on it if you use it everyday.
