Hello. I just started taking 5mg of Ritalin 2 or 3 per day as needed last night. I was prescribed it for my narcolepsy by my sleep doctor, and so far it appears to be helping for that, which is great.
BUT, I also suffer from extreme MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), and am on a cocktail of 5 different depression meds to try to treat it. My psychiatrist and I have been working on that cocktail since 2011.
I had NO IDEA that Ritalin could have an effect on MDD. My doctor didn’t mention that to me. But, OMG, after only two doses, I can say I actually can feel this difference in myself relating to the depression that I haven’t felt in years! In facts, the one person who wrote here and said it could work in hours was correct. I took my first dose last night, and within two hours I was noticeably a different person!
I was over with some friends last night, one who had only known me for about a year. A couple of hours into the evening, he actually said to me, to my surprise of course, “Who are you? You are talking and moving around and doing stuff! You’re not just sitting there like a lump on a log all by yourself”. And, I wasn’t napping while I was there too!
And, again this morning, I just FEEL so much better. I feel like I want to get up and go do things. For so long I’ve just been so very tired, fatigued, and just didn’t want to do anything.
I’ve only had two doses, and I don’t know what my ultimate correct dose will end up being, but this makes me feel hopeful for the first time in a very long time that there might be some way out of this total fog I have been in for just so long.
I have been begging every doctor I have; and I have a lot, for well over a year now to just help me to wake up and feel like getting out of the bed again. This drugs’ reaction for me reminds me of the immediate effect I had received years ago when I had first added Abilify to my arsenal of depression meds. Oh my, that med actually changed my life! It got me out of my whole “ball on the bed” stage of my deep depression.
I’m thinking that this med just could have a similar “Aha” effect on me. I know it’s been a while since you put up your post, and I realize that mine is long, but I wanted you to know my story.
BTW, I wasn’t a member on this site, and only joined just to answer your post! So, I’m curious, what ended up happening with you and the Ritalin? Did it work out? How long did it take to work for you, if it worked at all.
Thanks for putting your question up here, and I really hope to here back from you soon.
Susan
Ritalin can become effective for treating TRD (treatment resistant depression) very rapidly... many people start to feel immediate relief within hours to just a couple of days.

Thank you for answering. I’m on day 3 of a low dose & waiting to feel the effects.
Stay in touch with your doctor during this initial period. If you're on a very low dose you may need an adjustment... 60mg/day is the maximum recommended dose so you have plenty of wiggle room if an increase is indicated.
Take care!
Yes my doctor said to go from 10 mg to 20 mg after 5 days,& do that for two weeks then up to 30 mg after that. Thank you for your reply.
