my diagnosis is... polycystic ovaries... over a dozen cysts in each of my ovaries from an OB-GYN in the Philippines after a transvaginal exam. i was prescribed Metformin HCI, 500 mg, 3x a day, for a whole year. i never had a blood drawn in the Philippines. i was never diagnosed diabetes, last check up, well yrs. ago, my blood sugar was fine. so i cannot understand now why i was prescribed this meds, could this medicine help me? my only other issue is that i'm verry irregular w/ my menstrual cycle. I just found out this meds is for type 2 diabetes and i'm not even diabetic. someone pls help me..thanks

I dont really know very much on this however what i do know is i was offered metformin when i first was diagnosed with PCOS i tried it and was on it for approx 2years and i hated it... the side affects were terrible and after reading more info on the net and what other women had experienced with metformin i quickly went straight back to my gp asking for something else ive now been on medroxyproesterone for 3years and its been amazing.. does what it says on the box so to speak! and so far not one side affect so far so good. Definatly read up on the net :)

I was also taken aback to read your question - Metformin being used for polycystic ovaries, after having seen it on the net it was startling that Metformin could perhaps be used for polycystic ovaries, you could read more articles on: http://www.jkscience.org/archive/Volume73/role.pdf & http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/glucophage-metformin-pcos.html, however please do check it with a specialist/gynecologist, & if you are able to find more information?
