I'll be going in April to discuss an ablation for SVT. I currently take Metaprolol 25 mg 2x since June 2011. Anyone had an ablation and still taking Metaprolol ? I would like to know possibilities, if I decide to do the ablation.
Metaprolol after ablation ?

Hi, I have had two ablations in the past, which was done because I developed Tachycardia after my Hysterectomy surgery. I don't want to scare you, but when they did the first ablation I got a punctured lung. I am telling you this because no one told me this could happen, when I came around from the ablation I just didn't feel good and it was harder to breath. But to cut a long story short, the first ablation didn't work and I had to have another one done the following month. Once again when I had the ablation they punctured my other lung this time, but my Tachycardia came down from the 200's to around the 40's over a short time. The Dr's think that the scar tissue from the ablation caused the low heart rate, which made me pass out and feel lightheaded most of the time. But because of of the fainting and that the heart rate would not recover, I ended up having to have a Pacemaker fitted to keep my heart rate above 60 beats per minutes. I really wanted to just warn you about what could happen, but this doesn't mean it will happen to you. I was just one of the unlucky ones, I really believe that. I take Metoprolol also, I take 75mg twice per day. Well I hope this helped you a little, take care Liz.
Wow, Liz, I didn't know about this! I take atenolol for my irregular fast heartbeat, & it works great... Mary
Thanks for answering, Liz. Sorry for what you've been through.
The meds make me tired, gain weight and blur my vision. I was hoping to get off them. But, I see you are taking more mg than I am after an ablation. And I wonder why, after reducing your heart rate enough to need a pacemaker, they still have you on Metoprolol ?
What can I say, I am special... I am not sure why one minute my heart rate would be jumping into the high hundreds the I stay a steady 60 bpm, also the blood pressure is going into the high 160's then like now I have a low BP just over 100. I hear you about the weight gain, I have never been so heavy before. But I believe my Lyrica is partly to blame for the weight gain, but what can you do if you need the meds. Take care Liz.
Liz, are you sure the Lyrica weight isn't water weight? I had that too, & asked my heart doc for a water pill & he said absolutely not! It would kill me as ny BP was so normally low anyway at 110/60. Then 2 1/2 months later my BP shot to 190/100, & my PCP took me off of the Lyrica, & put me on furosemide for the BP. & in 2 days I lost 8 pounds of just water. I have ankles again! I won't be ble to tke the Lyrica again, but am doing ok without it. The BP is down to about 140/68 most days now, but my atenolol was increased (well I did that) to 50mg a day because my heart rate had gone way over 100 again too, & the combo brought my BP down finally. I am now down 11 pounds from my Lyrica days,(just 5 weeks ago) & heart rate is back in the low to mid seventies. ... Mary
Hi Mary, the only reason I said about the Lyrica could be to blame about the weight gain is, since my Dr increased the dose to 150mg at bedtime I seemed to put weight on much quicker. I know the weight gain is partly my fault also, with being in the wheelchair for over a year, and not being so mobile the weight was bound to increase. I just need to push myself a bit harder to exercise I guess, easier said then done when your hurting to start with. Take care, Liz.
Oh hon, I know you can't exercise much. I found the neatest exercise machine. All it is a series of pulleys with 3 different strenghths. It has a bench you can sit on & the pulleys go from the floor(for the legs) & behind where you sit for the arms & upper body. Of course it's still gathering dust! ha! but I plan on starting to finally using it. After you get used to the low impact, you move up to the next on, & then the thrid one. If you are able, you can then add 2 together & so on. They are like bungee cords. Pretty neat system where it's mostly streching & low impact. I think it's going to be awesome... Mary
Another thing you entioned to me was about not having the MRI's because of your paemaker because you doctor didn't want to shut if off? Well, girl that MRI would pull the leads right out of your heart too! Don't let anyone suggest an MRI with a pacemaker... Mary
Mary, you don't have to worry about the MRI, It still makes me roll my eyes when a Dr suggest having a MRI I then count to 5 waiting for the penny to drop that I have a pacemaker, 9 times out of ten I have to mention I have a pacemaker then I know they haven't read my chart until they just came in to see me of just as they have sat down. You can so tell when they haven't prepared for your visit or not had time to. Thanks for answering the the other message, just got back home I have another appt in a couple of hours that was arranged earlier this morning. I will talk later, love liz.
