I had Burning Mouth Syndrome after a dental procedure. I had many painful fissures and a one inch circular dark red sore on my tongue. There was a water blister the size of a dime in the middle of this circle. There is a great lack of understanding concerning this illness. I was seen at one of the nation's top medical centers and there was no understanding. I was told to put aloe on my tongue and return in four months. I have done much research on this condition. My research often led me to dental procedures and dental materials. I lost my sense of taste, endured constant pain and burning and was very sick for almost two years. I found answers. I am a writer and would love to hear your story. I intend to write on this condition. Contact Sylvia Lawing through Facebook or Linkedin. Thank you

Yes -- strong connection between BMS & extractions in my case. Over 10 years ago I developed burning mouth/ tongue syndrome within a week of having my last 2 wisdom teeth removed (this was not as a teenager but in my middle age). I assume there must have been some nerve or tongue damage during the surgery. No migraines, no numbness, but definite sharp changes in taste and sometimes sensations of "pins & needles". Often unpleasant and difficult just to swallow water! My oral surgeon as well as my regular dentist had few suggestions re alleviating the new problem. I finally found the name BMS on the internet and realized others had had similar problems. Very slowly my situation improved. It took about 5 years to get back to normal taste & sensitivity in my mouth. 11 years after those 2 extractions I developed some variety of TMJ disorder -- so the TMJD may not be related to the BMS. Thanks for the opportunity to report my experience. Glad you are researching this.
Yes after “TMJ bite correction with crowns” which was done improperly and then redone. Never the same since and now have gut feeling burning related to metal in crowns.
I had major dental work done and burning mouth syndrome appeared My teeth & gums drive me crazy. My mouth is so dry I can hardly talk. I’ve tried pilocarpine torches & Klonipine.
No help. I know my dental work brought it on.
Same here, have you had and luck or do you still have this?
Thanks

Jan 17 & I still have BMS. My oral path has recommended a teeth cleaning since I have the sensation of my teeth being sticky. Almost everything I try to eat sticks to my teeth. My gums & mouth are very sensitive but it’s my teeth that drive me crazy!
I’m afraid to go in for a cleaning since I believe dental work is what started my problem.
Could you please describe dental work? Did it involve acrylic that had to be cured? Were you given antibiotics if so, what exactly?
To Burning Mouth- could you please describe your experience- thank you
I was not given any antibiotics.
I had 3 fillings with white that they use the blue light on, I never had those kind of fillings before . Had a tooth pulled a cap that was replaced . 1 st the tooth was pulled and I had lots of novicane and shortly after that my tongue started to tingle after each procedure my tongue started to burn I after all the work was done in November 2018 my mouth was on fire! Iv told the dentist but of course he sees nothing,iv been to an allergists, now I'm having patch testing but it doesn't look like anything is showing up, will be going back to see if I'm allergic to anything tomorrow.. I wish I never went to the dentist
Sylvia, you said that you had burning mouth, is it gone? If so how did you get rid of this?
My BMS is not gone however, it is greatly reduced from the intensity of burning that I had when it started 2015. Then it was horrific!!! Now, it is a nuisance, tolerable. However, my lips were so damaged that they will just start to peel and for five minutes the white dead skin just turns loose. I cannot wear lipstick, it burns. Foods high in acid burn my tongue and mouth. I have learned what hurts me- and I avoid these things. The blue light that was mentioned is used to cure acrylic. White fillings are resin (plastic). As to the mention of a sticky feeling on the teeth, Is this your natural teeth Are they smooth when you brush and then the sticky (Or is it rough?) feeling comes in about 5-10 minutes later?
I still have a condition of some sort. I have had success in curing dry mouth, but my gums are still sore & my teeth are sticky enough that almost everything I eat sticks to them. I have to manually remove food from my teeth with a toothpick. Miserable condition.
Ok so I don't have an allergies to dental work. They are checking to see if I'm low in vitamin b.
Have you ever tried bitten the mouth wash for dry mouth?
That was biotin mouth rinse for dry mouth
Sylvia how did you reduce your burning mouth? You say it's greatly reduced, how did you treat your burning mouth.
Hi it is going to be 8 years in May, 2018 that my mouth started to burn after a root canal. It has been a living hell I have lost over l5 pounds and I am so thin now. I have been all over Manhattan searching for answers from different doctors and nothing. After a years of having this it started to simmer down on and off but now every since August of 2017 it has been burning non stop just a few days on and off and it comes right back. I am going back to a new Oral Surgeon this week and sees what he has to say. I am so unhappy I have lost my desire to even go out and socialize. I am just pray to God some one helps us with a cure one day. It gotten to the point that I just do not know what to eat anymore. I am still so thin it is horrible. I have tried mouth washes and things to swirl in your mouth and nothing. I have to becareful with centain meds like tylenol because it also burns :-(
Hi, Looks like there are lots of people who have this problem after dental visits, but hard to prove, I have been to a few different dental teams, but am still left with this condition, and keep hoping that it will go in time! hope all goes well with your new surgeon, and if anyone finds any cure, keep us all informed,.
You sound like me. Have you had any luck yet . Do u still have this. I to went to dentist had tooth pulled and the burning started.
I am so sorry- I am studying this and will follow the comments.
yes, I too suffered with this after a dental visit, I went for a deep clean, scale and polish, and mouth felt strange sensation, straight after, like like tooth rubbing inside of cheek, sometimes a pinching feeling, and a burning /and or stinging pain, when of which is bad, wears me down! I have been prescribed Amytryptyline 10mg, and started this a while ago,but felt dry mouth/tired so stopped, but am going to try again and persever, This condition and finding a cure scares me!
I am still researching this and following up with professionals.
My version of BMS started after poor root canal work followed by my RHS gum swelling. Now been going on 4 years but no specialist will take on possibility of Dental work been responsibility. Its hell.
Really want a copy of your book , any idea when you might publish. Thanks Mike,
Michael- I am doing research and am getting information together to substantiate what I believe to be true about BMS. I will stay connected to this posting site. Please give me any more info about your particular experience with dental work and BMS. Thank you
My started after I burnt the roof of my mouth several months ago, however, I have 2 friends that have the same symptoms after a nerve was hit when they had freezing for a dental procedure. Is it nerve based? My doctor says no, but I'm skeptical.
Mine started with having all my top teeth removed at once years ago, in the first year after the teeth were removed I had FIVE different sets of dentures made as it seemed to get worse if I put dentures in and I was so sure it must be the actual dentures causing the burning. Now over 10 years later I have had implants done and still suffer. My doctor, believes that the removal of all the teeth at one time shocked the nerves. I have tried so many drugs some of which helped the pain , none of which cured anything, and all of which made me me so sleepy and out of it I decided I would rather suffer the pain. The only thing that helps a bit is Thrive nicotine lozenges... but at $40.00 A week can be a little expensive ...

I think I am getting closer to having enough information to validate the connection. Thank you . Please stay in touch with up dates.
MS- I am still researching this. More and more people associate the BMS with dental work .
I have had BMS since 2014 after a very aggressive tooth extraction. It began as extreme dysgusia then went to extreme burn after 6 months. After seeing every dentist/oral surgeon/ENT in town, I became a patient at The Mayo Clinic. There is no cure. They put me on high doses of Gabapentin and Clonazapam. They help, but every day is still a nightmare. BMS has taken my happy life away from me. I am so sorry for anyone who suffers with this
I am so sorry to hear this. Sorry you are suffering. How soon after the extraction did the burning start? Have you had any allergy testing? I just found out I am allergic to 3 ingredients that are in dental materials and concerned that might be causing my burning.
I got a horrible taste in my mouth as soon as my anesthesia wore off. The bad taste lasted for 6 months and the burn began immediately after wood. I still suffer with it.
Hi I have this now for almost 9 years in May, it started 24 hours after I had a root canal I am pretty sure something happened during the process because I was just fine before having this done. I have gone to so many doctors and nothing I am so miserable I just do not know what to do. It is gotten to the point that everything I eat burns!!! I pray to God everyone that has this gets better soon.
Sorry to hear this, I live in L.A. and I have asked my dentist an oral surgeon who recently pulled a wisdom tooth(and these are well known docs) what they know about BMS and they act like I'm speaking in tongues(a little Pun) they are clueless??? I have had my burning tongue since 2017.
And my life with this amount of pain is certainly a drag. I am also sorry for anyone who suffers from this.
Hi have you had any luck yet. I too have burning on my right side of tongue for 2 years after alot of dental work.
I have BMS. I have had it since Jan 2017. I just found out I am allergic to 4 materials used in dental procedures. (Test at Contact Dermatitis Institute). I have been going to the dentist since I was 7, first root canal at 10... now 39. 14 fillings, 5 crowns, 1 implant... think thats why I developed an allergy to dental materials. Last filling was in Sept 2016. Mouth burning started Jan 2017. Not sure theres a connection, either are any of my doctors. Need a dentist that can do work without acrylate based materials but can't find one. I've seen lots of doctors, had lots of tests... Any more udpates on BMS?
My BMS all started with a tooth filling that irritated my tounge. I went back and had it smoothed but the irritation remind. Gradually the sensation went to the upper side of my gum line and sides of my tongue. When not chewing gum I suck on the side of my tongue enough that it makes a white line on my tongue. Driving me crazy. After seeing 2 dentists, a GP, a OBGYN (for homones) and an ENT several times, I am now trying Amitriptyline. Has anyone else tried this medicine? I am have only been on it for three nights but really suffering with the side effects. It does seem to be helping my mouth but very drowsy all day, nausea in middle of night and constipation. I am already considering stopping taking it even though there is noticeable improvement in my mouth.
Did the burning start exactly on the day you had the filling done? Does your whole tongue and mouth burn? How long since it first started?
Hi, just wondering how you got on with Amitriptyline? I too suffer this after visiting dentist, and had strange sensations like you described, and a Burning/stinging pain! I have been given the same drug, but stopped through side effects, but am thinking of retrying it 10mg, but dont want to make my mouth dry,as scared in case that will make it worse. any advice appreciated, thanks Jayne.
I couldn't stand the sleepiness and just had to come off this drug... I have had BMS since I allowed a dentist to remove ALL my top teeth at once. My doctor believes nerve damage was done resulting in the BMS
I had an infected tooth and put on antibiotics and then put on a much stronger one. A few weeks later my BMS started and never stopped. Such pain and misery.
What follow up treatment did you have to address the infected tooth? Did you get a filling or crown for instance?
No. I had had a root canal years earlier and the gum swelled for unknown reasons.
The whole side of my face swelled up but went down with.antibiotics.
I think the very strong antibiotics had something to do.with causing the BMS but no Dr has ever been able to figure it out
Each day is different and some days is a lot worse than other days. And right now my dentist is having me to take flu Kona is 4 like a slight yeast infection which would be oral and I feel like that has helped some but then some days it's still really bad. I have to chew gum all day long which I hate chaingun and I have to do dry mouth lozenges which helps a little bit and I also use neosporin on the inside of my mouth and sometimes Orajel paste which I put on at night in my mouth and it helps me to be able to sleep and it does seem better a little bit in the morning but what I take is fluconase sp?
I have tried all kinds of things and nothing has really helped in the long run. L-lysine was one thing I took and I also took aloe which I couldn't stand the taste of and I also have tried a medicine that makes you produce more saliva which was kind of making me produce too much saliva but I have had this for about six years now at least and it is a daily battle all day long. But my dentist is trying to help me by trying different things. He taught dentistry at IU School of Dentistry for years.
You state that you had the root canal years ago. Was it then that the gums swelled and face swelled and you took antibiotics?
Each day is different and some days is a lot worse than other days. And right now my dentist is having me to take fluconazol is 4 like a yeast infection which would be an.oral type and I feel like that has helped some but then some days it's still really bad. It does seem better a little bit in the morning but what I take is fluconazole sp?
Let me know what you figure out. Thanks
Did it start when you had the root canal?
Jibsong6 My problems also started after root canal work and then a swollen gum. First time someone has shown the same starting symptons as me. Thanks for posting it. Mike
Still searching for more info on people who had dental work done prior to Burning Mouth Syndrome.
My BMS started after I had a tooth pulled and the periodontist was building up the bone for a dental implant. This was in 2018. I recently went to Johns Hopkins and saw a team of doctors who treat Sjogren's syndrome. I did not have Sjogren's syndrome, they said I have burning mouth syndrome. A rheumatologist prescribed cevimeline 30 mg for increasing saliva, I take sertraline 125 mg a day, Ativan as needed. I chew sugarless bubble gum and when the burning gets unbearable at night, I use an oral gel on my tongue. An oral surgeon prescribed a mouthguard to use at night. I used to take gabapentin and lyrica, had to stop because it wasn't helping and caused weight gain.
