What is the difference between 0.5mg Xanax and Prozac 20mg?
The doctor said that when I turn 60 years old in December, he wont give me Xanax any more for fear of me falling. I am active and have no physical disabilities. Is there any other kind of drug that is similar to Xanax?
I dont want to lose my Xanax?

Benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax) can potentially cause impaired co-ordination in up to 40% of users and balance disorders in up to 10%. These effects are more pronounced in the elderly.
I only take it when im trying to sleep, and the dose is 0.5, i dont feel any effects, im just happy to be able to sleep eventually. one time i took 2 pills of 10mg and i did diffenately felt the effects.
Hi, I have been on Prozac for over 30 years, up to 60 mg daily, I am 68 years old, it helps with depression but not my anxiety or panic attacks. Have been on Xanax since 2019, only take as needed , 2-3 times a week. 0.5 mg. Really helps calm me down at night, and the next day. I have never heard anything about it and falls. I am not sure you are going to your normal GP doctor, or a Psychiatrist, I have learned that it is hard to get your regular doctor to prescribe Xanax, you have to just almost beg for it. I started going to a Psychiatrist, and had no problem with getting this med from her. I am older than you and she has never mentioned to me about falls?? So might just be your doctor? Only you know how it works for your body, and if you are not having trouble with falls now, why not continue.
Just keep this in mind, to watch yourself, if you seem to be falling more, then you may consider going off of it. But again normal doctors DO NOT like to script Xanax! Not sure what you could take instead of Xanax. I do know it works!! Good Luck!! ( :
It is my psychiatrist that prescribes me 400MG seroquel and 0.5MG xanax. I had been on the 400mg seroquel for years before I started going to this doctor, so he kept that the same. The second visit he prescribed me xanax 0.5, 60 per month. Than the pandimic came, so I have been doing phone visits with the doctor ever since.
It was some time ago when I asked for him to raise the MG he instead prescribed me 90 per month. Directing me to take 3 a day, (morning noon and night) but, I take them as I need them for panic attacts and the when I feel the beginning of one, it is always at night like when im trying to go to sleep.
This last time I was going to ask the doctor to raise the MG for the xanax, but before I could do that, he asked me about my age and told me about him cutting me off of the xanax when I turn 60, that will be in december.
About what you said about me going to my "normal GP doctor, or a Psychiatrist" I have both and It is clear that my normal "GP" doesn’t prescribe any physc (mental) medication just as my Psychiatrist wont prescribe medication for physical issues.
I live in Pennsylvania, I wonder if what state you live in would make a difference about what doctors can prescribe? He said that he didn’t want to get in trouble.
Thank you so much for all that you wrote, and for your time and your effort has been very helpful and very much appreciated!!
I took Prozac years ago. It worked very well for my depression and believe it or not my PMS--no more mood swings. I heard it also helped anxiety, but not for me. I had to stop the Prozac after about a year because I was getting those involuntary movements. Switched to Paxil... worked well for depression and maybe a little for anxiety, but not enough. Finally after decades of suffering with anxiety, my doctor agreed to give me Klonopin. I'm 71 and have been taking it for 15 years and there is a chance of addiction if you take too many or keep asking the doctor to raise the dose. I've been on the same dose the whole time and my life is a lot less stressful and chaotic now. If my doctor ever suggested taking me off of either drug, I would change doctors, but this is just one woman's opinion.
thank you, your info is very helpful
