Hi, I was started on Campral the first day of my detox. This is normal practice for the facility i used. So it is OK to still have alcohol in your system when you take your first one. It isn't really advisable to continue drinking while taking this medication, best to be used in place of...
Thank you for that information. My husband has started it, he refuses to go into a detox program. He has medical issues now and has been advised he must stop but he just can't seem to put it down regardless of the consequenses. The Dr give him Campral but he still want go into a program. He just keeps saying he can do it on his own but so far he hasn't been successful. As a spouse it is painful to see him destroying and taking his own life but I also know that he has to want to stop in order for it to happen. He is just not there yet. I told him that he is wasting the medicine if he is still drinking.
Yes, i see where you are coming from, it does seem a little pointless taking Campral if the person is continuing to drink habitually. It is so important for the person who is drinking, to want to stop themself, it is such a strong addiction, and one very hard to beat. You have to have your head in it, the willingness to want to become, and remain, sober... If getting in to a facility is an option, this is arguably the best option for someone wanting to kick the 'habit'.
Its not case of having your last drink how many hours before. Campral is supposed to be started after detox has happened, that kind of quite drinking. Here is what the literature says Treatment with Campral should be initiated as soon as possible after the period of alcohol withdrawal, when the patient has achieved abstinence, and should be maintained if the patient relapses. Campral should be used as part of a comprehensive psychosocial treatment program.
Thank you for response
