Hi, Janet!
These excepts may help:
National Alliance on Mental Illness
"Are There Any Risks For Taking Venlafaxine For Long Periods Of Time?
To date, there are no known problems associated with long term use of venlafaxine. It is a safe and effective medication when used as directed."
National Health Service
"For most people, venlafaxine is safe to take for a long time. There don’t seem to be any lasting harmful effects from taking venlafaxine for many months and years."
PsyCom
"What are the potential long-term effects of taking Effexor?
Effexor may cause angle-closure glaucoma, so talk to your doctor about the risks and about setting up an eye examination."
There is also the factor of venlafaxine discontinuation which can cause adverse effects if not done under a doctor's supervision. There are precautions to be taken in patients with underlying medical conditions.
All in all, with few exceptions, it seems that it's safe for most people to use long term.
I took it for over seven years with no problems.
Best regards and I hope this helps.
