I have been on 24 mcg of Amitiza daily for several years. Now my health insurance has taken Amitiza off their preferred list. They suggest Linzess. I need a comparison before I switch medications.
I am lactose intolerant and have chronic constipation due to my milk insensitivity.
How does Linzess compare to Amitiza?

Hi Wendy. If Amitiza has been working for you have you contacted your PCP or GI doctor and have them call your insurance company and see if you can get a prior authorization from them so you will be able to continue to take if. I just started taking 24 mcg of amitiza twice a day. My PCP had to get prior authorization in order for me to get a prescription.
I took Linzess 290 for approximately 3 months (got samples from GI). Linzess gave me the usual gas and abdominal cramps with small amount of diarrhea every day but in general did work. Stopped taking it as the prescription was too expensive. Let me know how you make out with the prior authorization.
Linzess worked better for me. But can take the Linzess 145 to reduce the diarrhea. Nothing is great and insurance coverage is minimal.
There is a new drug called Trulance that was recently FDA approved for CIC and is up for approval in IBS-C. In clinical trials, diarrhea was much lower than Linzess. Since it's a new drug, the manufacturer (Synergy) is offering substantial rebates. Google "Poop Troop"'and download their "Poop Troop" app/emoji keyboard from the Apple AppStore
Depending on the pt their are coupons online for Linzess where you can receive a 90 day prescription for $30. I used one and worked just fine. Also there is a new dosing of linzess that came out. 72mcg so a milder agent with less diarrhea if that was a concern with the higher doses.
