A good source of information is in the Scientific Direct article cost-effectiveness analysis of treatments for metastatic prostate cancer. The article just puts an estimate of the cost of the treatment compared to the length of time a patient is expected to live. Everyone is will respond differently to their treatment.
catydid,
I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. My prayers are with you both. Unfortunately, not even the best doctor in the world can accurately predict life expectancy with cancer. Many factors go into the individual case, such as stage, metastases, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and of course, age. From what I've read Lupron will not cure the cancer, but can keep it from spreading/growing. Has your husband had any other treatments? I encourage you to research his cancer as much as you can so that you will be armed with a basic knowledge when you talk to his doctor. This knowledge will help you to better understand what the doctor is telling you, since many have not mastered the art of "dumbing it down" for us. LOL
I am a 9 year survivor of multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer. So, I am sharing what I learned through my own journey with cancer. Don't get discouraged. Never give up. Sometimes it will seem that he is taking one step forward and 2 steps back. And he might be! That is when you can hold onto your husband and lift him up. Your love and support are the best medicine he can receive through this battle. Trust me -- I know!
Send me a private question any time if you want to talk. You need to take care of yourself too, catydid.

I'm at the same point, and I hope a very long time, my levels are going down with every lab so we'll have to both wait and see, I'll be looking for an answer to this one too
Hal you will be in my prayers as well , I know it puts your body and mind through a lot of changes , my husband has very bad mood swings , but of course that't to be expected , just like messing with a womans estrogen , it's messing with the testerone in men , may God keep you and hold you through these trying times... Love in Christ
