I just started Imdur yesterday for esophageal spasms and I am wondering how long it takes to get relief from the chest pains. I haven't gotten any relief yet. I am on the lowest dose available (30mg) to start with.

Hi LeslieAnn1231 & welcome to the site. I suggest you call your doctor about this question. Imdur is normally used for chest pain related to the heart not esophageal spasms, but nitrates can be used for several different types of spasms also, so this may be your doctors thinking. I am giving you a link to read about this medication so that you understand how it works etc... I do believe if it hasn't worked yet, you do need to contact your doctor about this. This type of nitrate doesn't work after a spasm has started so I hope they have you on a regular schedule for taking it. Something like nitrostat works after the chest pain starts or spasm. It's a more take as you need it type of nitrate. Just a thought...

LesieAnn, I also am wondering if your doctor has completely ruled out heart problems with you? I assume they have... Mary
Mary, Thank you for your response. I have been in contact with a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist. I have gone through all the heart tests and everything there came out great as far as heart disease. I then had an upper GI done and found that I do have a stricture there and it appears that it is being caused by smooth muscle vasomotor reactivity. Hence the prescription for the Imdur. I am on a very low daily dose to start out with and it seems to be helping gradually more each day. I have been in contact with my Dr. since I wrote the original post and she said to give it about a week for it to be fully effective. A little longer than I want to wait, but oh, well, I guess I have to be more patient.
You are very welcome. I used to use nitrates for spasms in my bilibary tract so I know what you mean. Glad to hear it is finally starting to help... Mary
It seems to be helping the spasms a bit but now the headaches are kicking in. Not sure if I'll be able to stick with it. Any thoughts on the headaches? What was you experience with those?
I wasn't on a long acting nitrate like you are. I was on nitrostat, & got the headaches, but they always went away soon afterwards. I'm not sure about yours. My hubby uses nitro patches, & had headaches, but after awhile they did stop, so hopefully yours will too.If not, you might have to ask the doctor to switch you to a different type that you take just when you have the spasms. You might want to give your doc a call about the headaches tho'.
Definitely will. Thanks for your input.
Dr recommended Imdur 30 for my atypical chest pain about 15 days back . I am relieved now and Dr suggested to take for max 1 more month and stop it. ( second opinion). In case your problem is not Heart, then better to take 1/2 dose
and see for yourself. In US , Docs may not agree for such variation.I suggest your following Veg diet , Yoga and Meditation with creative visualisation that pain is gone. This is how I have survived severe Thanks
