I am tired all day long. I have no medical so I can't get medication from a doctor for it. Does anyone know of anything I can do so I can sleep and have more energy in the day?
I have insomenia, I only sleep 3 or 4 hours a night. It takes me a long long time to fall asleep?

It depends on how old you are. If you are single, maybe you are sad . If you are married then it could be a spousal problem. I am a single 55 year man and I found to eat dinner around 4pm then go for walk around 6-7pm. By 9pm I am sleeping. And wake up at 5am so I can see the sun rise. That usually works for me.
I have Lupus, Fibromyalgia, chronic pancreatitis, and neck and back disc problems and take lots of meds that should make me sleepy, but I have major insomnia to the point where I get anxious going to bed and laying there with my brain going 100 miles a minute…the nights are so long. I’m afraid to try it because I take 2 opiates, Xanax, pancreatic enzymes, bp med, an antidepressant, Flexeril, Protonix and cholesterol meds. You would think with all the meds I’m on, one of them would make me fall asleep. I tried Melatonin once 20 yrs ago and it knocked me out, it was great! But I’m 63 now and melatonin doesn’t work anymore for me. I’ve taken Benadryl, which helps me fall asleep, but I only sleep 3 hrs or so. My cousin and my great-aunt used to drink NyQuil and they slept like babies!
My friend Delila has a good point, but I am also going to suggest a couple of benadryl to make you sleepy in the first place. You are probably an A type personality, which makes it hard to shut down your thoughts at night. Do you find yourself thinking about a lot of things while trying to fall off to sleep? I believe you also asked a question last night about depression? or maybe it was someone else. People that suffer depression, on some meds do have difficulty falling off to & staying asleep. Just my thoughts... Mary
Thank you Mary. Yes, I do think and obcess about things all day and when trying to sleep. I can't fall asleep or stay asleep. My mind never seems to shut down, not even to sleep. That is why I am tired all day I think. Yes, I do suffer from depression, I have borderline personality disorder and chronic anxiety all the time to.
Watch for my friend Pledge to answer some questions. He also has insommnia, & take depression meds. He is very well versed in these type of disorders... Mary
Hi Mary, can you tell me more about the A type personality you mentioned please?
Well, don't have my notes right handy, but that is one sign, not being able to go to sleep because you cn't shut down your thoughts at night. Another is being a multitasker & trying to do more than one should, & it has to be perfect too. I've been like that all my life. Doing 6 or 7 things at a time, altho' my health has slowed me down, my mind is all over the place! I'll try to find that info & send it too you... Mary
Hi, depending where you live, you may be able to buy Melatonin OTC. This is a naturally occurring 'chemical' in our bodies already, and the additional dose, taken at bedtime can be really helpful for sleep. Despite it being a 'natural' medication, it can be quite potent, so be aware of this. You can buy it in 3,5 and 6mg tablets. 6mg being the maximum daily dosage. Please check with a pharmacist if you are taking any other medication, so not to experience drug interactions. If you are OK to take it, i would definitely recommend it. I had the same problem as you and it was really good.
Thank you, I really appreciate the information. I'll try it, it can't hurt.
Very good answer! Start out with the 3mg melatonin. Take it at least an hour before you intend on going to bed. But here's the thing- it's not effective unless you are in darkness. Strange but true. So make sure that you turn out all of those lights, it's just how melatonin works! It's helped me in the past before! Wishing you a good night's sleep... -Shannon
Hi, thanks so much for adding that! I always forget to tell people that! : )
No problem! ;)
Great information !
Melatonin in liquid form is also available almost everywhere now too , and I’ve been taking it for years but I never ever knew it had to be taken in the dark !
This could be crucial information too !!!
It’s not helping me right now but it never hurts to know everything about everything you take !!!
