I'm having shoulder surgery next week for a non-union clavicle fracture. We are going to graft bone?We are grafting bone from my hip. The Doctor says the high use and stress of the shoulder make cadaver bone a bad choice. I'm really worried about the pain. I've heard the hip really hurts bad afterward. Anyone had this done?
Anyone had bone graft from hip - how bad is the pain afterwards?

I had the bone cut off the hip and transplanted into the tibia. It really bothered me to wear a belt for over a year.
I been having hip pain and went and saw the orthopedic doctor. Seems they lost a piece of the bone craft they cut off my crest 37 years ago and it’s worked it’s way down to my hip joint. May go after it with a fluoroscope
I had a bone graft from my hip for repair of fractured clavicle 4 years ago. The pain from severing of nerves at my clavicle was so severe the hip felt painfree. I walked with a limp and had some discomfort for a couple of weeks then painfree and could exercise as normal. In the last month I have had pain that feels like its the bone graft, deep inside my hip. I am awaiting the results of an x-ray of the hip. I have had ongoing pain and swelling at the clavicle, though have good range of movement and strength, and am considering having the plate removed. Has anyone had removal of a plate and how did that go with recovery, pain and returning to exercise.
I had a compression plate removed from my right tibia many years ago, about 12 months after a bone graft, with no negative results. The only reason the plate was removed was that the lower four of the eight screws were working their way out.
Hi all, I had a hip graft (6cm x 3 cm) and removal of internal oblique to replace my jaw bone and tissue that was invaded by a locally aggressive tumour. I was lucky to catch it when i did but i had no choice but to have the hip graft.
I have had ongoing pain in the glute, hip, groin, lower and thoracic back. I am unable to progress my rehab. 2 days ago I again strained the glutes muscle by simply turning around while walking in my back yard. All my glute muscles and obliques at the graft site are attached to mesh. My surgoen is good at listening but has no answer. I have had low level laser therapy for this pain and neck/face pain as a result of the surgery. The laser has helped reduce my pain (until i reaggravate the area again). But it doesn't fix the lack of function in my hip nor replace the tissue or bone. If only!
Does anyone know how restrictive mesh is for the movement on muscles? All I was told was id never be a weight lifter.
Does anyone have any experience with ongoing rehab to build strength and function?
Anyone know of any good physios or physicians in Australia?
As mentioned we all recover differently. I have a friend who had a small hip graft and has had no issues. We are individual, my experience is not indicative of yours. But those who have I would appreciate any information you could provide.

I had scoliosis surgery at 14..hip bone used for the fusion of the harrington rod along my spine. I am just now getting s little pain in my hip. I think its mostly from working out too much the other day. Other than that. No back pain.and no hip pain..thank you Mott Children's Hospital at U of M!
Yes I had a graft done from my hip in Dec., 2015, still in constant debilitating pain. I'm not sure what the alternative is to a graft if they can't do a cadaver? I am now going to have a stimulator implanted permanently in my back. hope that will give me some relief!
Hi, I thought I wrote something the other week but it hasn't come up. From what I was told bone grafts are the only options at the moment.
What does the implanted stimulator do? I'd be interested to hear how you get on with that. I've had low level laser therapy which has reduced the intensity of my pain but doesn't fix the mechanical issue from the graft (nothing will right?!). The laser really helped ease the pain in my back hips and neck from the graft.

I've just had the bone graft surgery done this year Jan 2018) in an attempt to heal a non-union fracture on my right wrist. The doc said the surgery was unlikely to be needed if my wrist looked good when he opened it up. It didn't, and he ended up getting some bone from my hip. Now a week out and every morning I wake up with agonizing pain on my right leg (feels like a sharp pain with a burning sensation from my hip to my thigh) which last till I can stand up and then slowly lessens until I take my pain meds. After doing some searching on the web for this procedure after my surgery I'm getting a little worried reading these other responses. I just turned 20 and really hope I dont have to spend the rest of my adult life having do deal with this. I understand everyone is diffferent so I try an think positive that its going to subsude with time.
Hello jb1212, how are you doing? You are so young to be in pain, hopefully the bone graft is a success and you are well.
I require hip bone graft for severe dental bone loss (caused by bad dentist). After reading everyone's experiences, I cancelled the procedure. I love to walk and I am not ready for the possibility of giving it up. I don't know what I will do about my severe dental issues. I hope you are okay.
Well I'm glad to say I'm doing much better now. I no longer require the medication nor do I wake up with the same level of pain. It is very minimal now when I wake up it only lasts for about 3o seconds until I get going. Finally, I can walk with my regular good posture. I really think it depends on the person and many other variables as to how long the pain will last. Now just hoping my wrist heals so Ican get back in the gym :).
Well I am fused from the C3 to the T1 they took bone out of both hips and my back it was quite painful and to this day I am still in a bit of pain... some days are worse than others it's going on 7 years now... I don't see it getting any better but it's mind over matter I guess... I take the good with the bad...
I had a bone graft from my hip for my wrist and it was absolutely fine.
I had surgery in 1983 for spinal fusion with bone taken from my right hip. My biggest problem today is the scar tissue that developed and impinged on nerves. Sometimes I have excruciating pain that is resolved by taking Medrol dose pack. This happens once or twice a year and it is very painful. I had a total of four back surgeries. the spinal fusion was the worst for me due to the bone graf taken from my hip. I have learned to live with the pain. I’m 65 years old and still very active. I play hockey tennis and golf whenever my body allows me to.
Hi, I realise this is a very old post, but appears to be ongoing. I had a hip to tibia bone graft forty years ago. From memory the hip was more painful than the leg for a while but settled down reasonably quickly. The reason for the graft was that I had been hit by a car and had about two inches of bone effectively missing and after four months with no growth, the Dr decided a graft was in order. I can still feel the dent in my hip from the donor site. The reason I am looking at graft queries is that the past couple of weeks I have been feeling like there is bone movement around the graft site and was wondering if my graft was breaking down. My fibula never knitted but that break is just below the knee, while the tibia fracture was about midway and that is where the new discomfort and clicking is coming from. Will be seeing the doc on Monday, hopefully with some answers. If anyone else has had similar and found answers it would be good to hear.
With regard to the recent issue with my leg, it appears that one half of the fibula has moved and now rubs against the tibia sometimes. The forty year old graft to my tibia is holding up well. I haven't had an issue with pain from either site since not long after the graft. The doc doesn't see any benefit in removing the fibula at this stage.
I'm having a cervical fusion on November 8th. The surgeon is suppose to do a bone graft on my hip. I'm scared
I had bone graft from the hip done in March of this year to put in my neck because I had the acdf surgery. However after the surgery once they removed the bone graft from your hip, you will walk on a walker that's what they will start you out with and I had to walk on one for about 3 weeks but as far as the pain goes it's not that bad the bruising is really severe at the location the area where they will take the bone from but every now and then I have a pain that goes down my hip down into my leg feels like it's down to the bone but then the next day is it it's okay so I think you'll do fine with it hope this helps
In Feb 2016 I had bone graft for a spinal fusion. They did the bone graft 2days before the fusion surgery. The bone graft hurt like hell. When they got me up that night my left leg was numb from the top of my leg. To my foot. They had to put a brace on my leg. I could not move my leg at all. Could not lift it. Today I still feel numb in my left Lower leg. My feet are always cold and my left hip hurts all the time. I had developed atrophy in my leg. I now feel warm sensation in lower leg and feet feel numb and don't feel something on the floor . The fusion was supposed to get rid of my lower extremities pain, instead I now have nerve damage and neuropathy in my feet. It's a horrible feeling I can never walk normal again. There are times I need to use my cane. I have a temporary handicap pass and I am eligible for permanent handicap, due to the numbness in my leg.
Hello, had a cervical bone fusion back in 2002. Cervical 100%, iliac 30% recovered. Still painful every single day. Avoid if you can.
Hello surge98b. This past Thursday I had a fourth surg to hopefully mend a non union to my left wrist caused by a fall from a second story to the concrete down on the first. This was 21/2 yrs ago. The posts and screws have broken free and my crushed bones remained crushed and extremely painful leaving me in casts and braces the entire time.needless to say it's been terrible. So now here I M a few days out and I'm praying things will improve. I'm not sure I can tolorate this pain at the break and donor site for too much longer. I'm not hay at needing pills around the clock and I worry about dependency on them. I flew from my home in Florida to Ohio to an Ortho surg in Kettering Ohio as I was not willing to give the Fla drs a fourth time. Presently I M wondering if I made a mistake but I do hope that in the months to come I can be more positive. I'll let this forum know. Take care... choose wisely... and think about it for a very long time!!!
I am currently in hospital, I've just had none remove from my hip, this was to rebuild my navicular and talus, very painful
