You really should see your Doctor about this, having said that, I'm wondering did your hurt your hand in some way recently? Do you have any small soft bumps anyplace on the top of your hand?
Many things can cause this pain, one would be the arthritis, or carpel tunnel disease, and one more that comes to mind is a ganglion cyst that can cause severe pain in your hand also, all the more reason to see a Doctor that specializes in hand surgery where they can do all the proper tests to determine just what may be going on with your hand, I wish you much luck and hope you take all the advice from the of folks here on the forum, and please check back and let us know how you're doing OK!
Good advice midwestma. When you mention ganglion cyst, it brought back a memory. My daughter had developed a large one on the top part of her wrist several years ago. The PC doc said the way they used to cure them was take the Bible (or other large book) and smash it on the cyst. True story! Now a days, they surgically remove them if they become bothersome.
As to the question, it's always best to have it checked by a doctor. No telling what could be causing the pain. It does seem to fit the Arthritis suggestions.
Good luck to you and hope you find the answers soon,
Chris
How true that is, my brother use to get them all the time, and would take a heavy book, board or what ever he could find and smash it to break it down, I'll never forget the first time he did this and passed out cold from the pain, I guess he got tougher over time, he never passed out again, but still did the same thing when he developed another cyst. AHHHH.. the thought of it makes me cringe... Now days, thankfully most people go to the doctor , the right thing to do... Have a good day!
Just a thouught, but it could be arthritis?
What you should is contact your Doctor.
