Just a FYI... i usually take 20mg of Pantoprazole every AM for acid relief and it works great with no issues ever, for some reason my doctor wrote my refill script for 40mg and this AM i took the 40, i went to the gym and when i got home my BP was insane high, like 170/100 (usually its 130/80), i was sweating bad, hands shaking, couldnt breath good, honestly thought i was going to die for a while. Then i came across these threads and saw that this drug can sneak up on your and do some nasty stuff. Just wanted to share.
I am in the same boat. I just turned 43, always had normal blood pressure of 120/80 or lower as recently as 2 months ago.
At the visit, my doc switched me from omeprazole to pantoprazole. Within weeks I was getting pretty bad headaches, but I've been prone to migraines since my teens, so I chalked it up to that. Yesterday, I had an appointment with my cardio (family history of heart problems), and my blood pressure was at stage 2 hypertension levels. This really has me freaked out.
Nothing in my lifestyle has changed in those 2 months, aside from switching to pantoprazole. I'm stopping it immediately and going back to omeprazole and see if things start to stabilize.
I'll follow up in a few days to a week.
Following up to my previous post:
It's been several months and in the weeks following the switch back off of pantoprazole, my blood pressure began to decrease. However, my blood pressure is still elevated above what it was pre-pantoprazole, with the occasional spike to 125ish over 95.
As I said before, my blood pressure was pretty good. The appointment with the cardio when he switched me initially was 120/70, and a month later it was sky high. And yes, it was the cardio that switched me from lansoprazole to pantoprazole. Is this normal for a cardio to tinker with gastro meds like this?
Regardless, I am getting freaked out now as my blood pressure still has not returned to what it was just months ago and I'm afraid that pantoprazole did some kind of damage.
I have been on this medication for 2 months now. I had very low BP before I began it. Now my pressure can run 150/82 on any given day. I get very dizzy and light headed and just don’t feel well. My Dr said that this is caused by a component of Protonix. It will indeed raise your blood pressure. A low sodium diet is effective in keeping it on a more manageable level. It it persists, I would certainly contact your physician and have him do a checkup to rule out hypertension on its own. Best of luck! Hope you’re feeling better today!
It does cause fast or irregular heartbeat, but anyways sodium is bad for high blood pressure, you must seek medical advice, hope this helps?
