I have been taking amlodipine, losartan and rosuvastatin for several years and am completely impotent as a result of these medications as all three contribute to ED. I guess you have to choose to be healthy or hard.
Just this week (12/31/19) I stopped taking this medication because of sexual desire and erection issues. The next afternoon my desire and erection went through the roof. From no interest to too much. As I sit here now I have an erection again already.
I'm 62 and been taking 5 mg Amlodipine for 1.5 years and olmesartan 40mg-hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg for 2 years for HP. I contacted my doctor with concerns about erectile dysfunction he had me drop the dose of Amlodipine to 2.5 mg. I had no change. I contacted my doctor once again he cut the Amlodipine completely out and got rid of the hydrochlorothiazide as well. It has been 4 days when will I get my mojo back?
I DEFINITELY had this problem when I was taking the Amlodipine/Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide combo pill but ever since they switch me to individual Amlodipine, Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide pills, the problem went away. I'm also taking Bystolic on top of those but I never thought Bystolic was the problem...
I’m 66!years old and just started taking 5 mg amlodipine daily for HBP this month (9/18). The drug seems to be working well for my hbp clearly bringing it down. However I’ve noticed that my erectile function has clearly deminished significantly. This has never happened in over 5 years of taking 50 mg viagra. This drug worked for me like clockwork giving me a huge erection every time. I don’t remember a single instance when it did not work. Except now since I started taking amlodipine in the month of September 2018. Fir me there is a clear and unequivocal cause and effect relationship. I will stop taking amlodipine immediately. My high blood pressure never affected my erection when using viagra. In addition I dont drink, smoke or use any kind of illicit drugs. I’m not on any other medications. All my lab work are in the normal range. I have no difficulty with urination, no pain and no obstructive symptoms.
My last infection was during college when I was treated for nongonoccal urethritis and yes 15 years ago I was treated fir a yeast infection on the glands penis.
Yes I am a high blood pressure patient and Once I had taken a medicine and on the other day my penis has no senses, I tried alot but I failed when I went to the doctor he told me its bcause of high BP bit I was sure that it is because of water pill for bp , and after some days My penis increased and perfect in 3-4 days. I went to doctor for high bp he written 80 mg +5mgamlodipine and Now I noticed that before my penis goes erect at once now not .
I found your question and feel relaxed tgat after stopping the medicine you ate good now. I also had to stop it .
Thanks buddy for sharing
I experienced ED too when I was on amlodipine 10mg for 30 days.
I switched to lisinopril 10mg only 3 days ago so haven't experienced any change yet.
Call Doc
some calcium channel blockers have this effect i switched from lopressor which dampened desire n performance to bystolic. At first it lowered my bp and pulse, but after a month, I... I might try taking half wasnt the same i could perform, but took a lot of effort plus my weight was increasing 20 pounds since Ive been taking it I might try taking a half dose of lisinopril
No! I have been on amlodipine for eight years. Things don’t seem the same. What do you suggest? After all is a prescription drug.
First, let set the record straight, I smoke cigars weekly (do not inhale), I drink scotch (several) with my cigars and my sex life has been great (60 years young). Visited the doctor and he told me that I needed to go on lisinopril hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg. After several weeks, I had 50% ED, after a couple more months, I was totally toast. Finally after a while I visited the doctor and explained it to him. I got the "well this can happen to guys your age!", and the fact that no one else has raised this as an issue with him... After a bit of me not taking his nonsense, he switched me over to amlodipine besyate 5 mg. I was on this for ~1 month with ZERO improvements to my E.D.,where I made another visit to his office after printing off a bunch of articles that noted that everything he was telling me before was nonsense and I wasn't alone in my thoughts.
So after I told him with no uncertain stance that the medicine was my problem, he then said to try something simple- lisinopril 20mg by itself! (NO thiazide diuretic (water pill)). After 3 days, I was back to ~50% recovery, After 1 one week, I was back to ~75%, and after 3 weeks, I was 95+% and that's about where I have stayed. But going from nothing to 95%... yeah!!! And all this time the doctor was blaming my age, drinking/smoking/etc. cause he said he had not heard anyone else complaining. Sorry, but maybe most others had doctors like mine that didn't give it a second thought that MAYBE... they were wrong! So as I call it to the doctor, plan c is working! I have my followup next week and I'm going to have a LONG discussion with him! BTW, he looked up E.D. on his phone while I was there and said that E.D. was a possibility but was really low percentage. I worked in the pharma business for 25 years and dealt with studies and tox... I know those numbers are biased! Worked with filings long enough so when someone quotes percentages... I just LAUGH!!!
I have been taking a hypertensive tablet for quite sometime and my doctor discovered just recently that, the medication iwas not very effective. He changed it to amlodipine 5mg. I have taken 44 tablets in total, one a day which has brought my pressure down!; but have now experienced ED. If I stop taking the medication, will I get my erection back?
Recently diagnosed with hypertension, and placed on Amlodipine 10mg. I have noticed ED just after four days of taking the drugs. What can I do to gain back my erection?
My friend, you are definitely NOT ALONE. I am a 65y/o retired doctor living in Thailand and relatively sexually active. Have been under self-care for 15 years w/o serious problems since then except recent tiredness, lethargy and basically minimal "power". I check my BP (196/130). I started on Amlo 5 mg daily. After 1 month it is getting closer to target. But after 3 weeks ED signs presented, and after a month, it's pretty dead down there. For now, I will opt to decrease my H/T and evaluate other options later. But here is something everyone should think about, if a concern to you:
The incidence of reported ED with amlodopine (Norvasc) is less than 2%. Don't take this figure lightly! That is a relatively high percentage rate for any untoward effect for any drug and in many cases the incidence of ED during the clinical trials, may have not been reported, due to the patient's embarrassment with the investigators. From what I read on this forum, there's a lot of folks out there just like me. Looks like more than 2% to me. You decide.
Im 29. Been on it for week. I am having opposite effects. I wake up maybe 3 times in 1 night with a full solid erection? It is vasodilator which is what viagra is.
I am a 74 year old male, married. My doctor put me on Amlodipine about 7-8 months ago. It was because Cozaar wasn't dropping my BP fast enough. Cozaar has a good history for NOT causing ED and not getting the dry cough. Right away I noticed a drop off in sexual performance. It has been steadily declining over the past few years, since I was first put on HBP meds. They ALL cause some ED problems. Amlodipine also caused me to retain fluids, so he prescribed a diuretic. I dropped off of Amlodipine and since the water pill is contraindicated for Sulfa sensitive people, I dropped it too. But right away my BP shot back up, so I started taking them again. Now, just like most men here, I have no erections most of the time. I have tried virtually every class of BP meds. I can't take Viagra due to it causing me a sour, bitter stomach, and as far as I can tell Cialis doesn't do much, if anything.
My drive has not decreased any since I was 40, but my little friend is not up to it these days, try as he may. My plan is to hopefully find SOME BP medicine that can offer me a better outcome. My doctor told me that he hadn't heard of any BP problems with Amlodipine. Maybe he should check with Google.
You are not alone so rest your heart. I started taking 5mg Amlodipine one daily in July 2011 for 2 weeks and realised I could not perform whiles on holiday. I blamed it on my very stressful job and my nagging partner who does not stop talking even when she is asleep. I gained full service back after completion of course although unconsciously.
Did not take it again until a month ago when I was prescribed the same medication and I realised after a month that I can hardly performe to my usual high standards. Cant just get it up. So I quickly came off it today upon doctors advice and research and will be handing the rest of the medication in to my doctor tomorrow when I see the idiot. I am monitoring performance. My blood pressure is very low now 129/74 compared to 156/94 a month ago as I have been running 2 km everyday for 3 months now and eating well. Do not smoke or drink and always had a healthy life style (I thought) and I hope to maintain the good diet. Can't afford to have a no show in that department. Never. Whattt! Must be kidding.
I am 48, and have been taking Amlodipine (5 mg) for about 3 months now. In the last month or so, my sex life has taken a complete dive. Can't get an erection and when I do, it is half limp. I have now decided to get off this medicine - will ask the doctor for a substitute, meanwhile can someone tell me how long it takes to get your sex-drive back? Thanks!
I suffered erectile dysfunction after taking amlodipine 5mg tablets for 3 weeks. Blood pressure went down alright so I gave it up yesterday morning and had my full sex drive back in the night. Less than 24 hours. Might be different for you. Mrs. is very happy and calling me darling with a smile again after 3 weeks. Poor woman.
Hello James,
I have read your article. . .scientifically theamlodipine needs a minimum of two weeks up to one month to be clearedentirely from your body, and yes it causes erectile dysfunction and u must replace it with another medication of same family of calcium channel blockers such as Lercadip 10mg which is equivalent to amlor 5mg and you will retain back ur erection . . .
U can also take sexual pills such as Viagra, cialis, levitra to boost ur performance until ur body restores back your healthy state as it was supposed to be . . .
one more thing, most hypertensives have low levels of testosterone and u must check ur testosterone levels by doing blood test coz testosterone is also responsible for most erections needed during the sexual performance !
I am also 48 and have been on daily 5mg Norvasc for 8 years. I do feel ED problem lately, only to be resolved by ED drugs temporary on and off. I wonder if I have been on Norvasc so long that my problem is beyond remedy.
It may take some time for the Amlodipine to leave your body but like OP, my drive came back within 3 days. I can say with 100% certainty dropping Amlodipine was the solution. I was put on 3 drugs after I was diagnosed with hypertension. I never believed I need all 3 and my BP has not risen at all since stopping. In fact, my diastolic is consistently lower since I stopped Amlodipine (90 vs low 80s).
erectile dysfunction, amlodipine, hypertension
