I began taking Pred Forte 3 days before each of my cataract surgeries, one was on July 5, the other on July 12. It seems like since that time I have not felt well... and just prone to 'feeling sick'... weak, more probs with bowels. I told the opthamoligist surgeon this but he just sort of blew it off. Have you ever heard any similar stories to this one? THANK YOU
Pred Forte - has anyone heard of these eye drops making you feel sick?

I am SO glad I found this post too! I have been taking 'Less' brand steroid eye drops in preparation for my LASIK eye surgery, and took for about 10 days total (5 after the surgery). I've had horrible nausea, burping and lower belly discomfort this whole time, and just connected it today as well when I googled acid reflux and eye drops. I stopped the drops yesterday per DR instructions, but still have symptoms tonight-- hoping the lasting effect isn't more than a few days! I go to eye Dr tomorrow for 1 week follow up and will ask about this to see what they say out of curiosity!! Hope everyone feels better and can find an alternative drop or method of placement in the eye!

PRED FORTE is a STEROID. It can absolutely make you feel sick. In my experience it has the same COMMON side effects that are listed for Prednisone tablets.
I had left eye cataract surgery Sept. 2018. I started the anti inflammatory and antibiotic drops several days before surgery. Those irritated my sinuses and gave me a mild headache with nausea. The Pred Forte was added after surgery to be used for one month. All prior symptoms intensified with a left sided headache, agitation and shortness of breath. I felt like I was on speed.
I called my eye doctor's office and was told these symptoms were NOT from the eye drops, to CONTINUE using them and go to the emergency room or see my doctor! I was checked by a nurse in my doctor's office and told I was fine. She also said my symptoms were NOT from the eye drops and to continue using them as instructed.
I immediately reported the symptoms to SANDOZ the Pred Forte drug manufacturer. They said to stop using the drops immediately but in my case to follow the doctor's instructions. I also reported the drug to the FDA.
Of course I don't want to jeopardize my cataract surgery so I will continue to use them. My eye doctor INSISTS she has never seen this reaction to the Pred Forte drops and there IS no other option. She modified my dosage to 2 times per day and added back the anti inflammatory drops.
*** NOTE ***
I take extraordinary measures to IMMEDIATELY blot the excess drops with a tissue and block my tear ducts. Next, I rinse the outside of my eye and inside my nose with water and blot dry. I blow my nose and rinse my eye with Refresh Tears. This has helped keep the side effects to a minimum.
Glad to find this site ... had second cat op last week and already changed eye drops once but still tum cramps feeling sick and fatigued... thought they wouldn’t believe me!! Can’t go on like this ... even tho sight is so important but another 4 weeks with these symptoms can’t be good for healing process ... Gaviscon through the night and Zantac help a bit plus bowl of porridge at 3 am to help stomach. Today very dizzy!
The surgeon said didn’t know of anyone else who was affected by drops! Had to change drops twice after my two cataract ops making me very dizzy bad stomach taking Gaviscon through the night or eating and feeling real fatigue ... its taken nearly 12 weeks to start feeling better it was definitely the eye drops! Had to stop drops early just had to be careful with keeping them very clean especially as I suffer with blepharitis and also PMR... now think should have waited much longer than three weeks in between ops too much for system and allergy to eye drops!
I had a laser iridotomy on both eyes in June and took Pred Forte for 21 days 4 times daily. The office staff told me that if I noticed the medication was going down my throat, I could press on the inner corner of my eye beside my nose to close off the drain channel there that connects to the throat. It worked for me. I'm sorry for all who are suffering and have suffered side effects from this drug. For me, I'm going to the eye doctor tomorrow because I now have heavy uncomfortable eyelids and I think the Pred Forte did it - didn't have this trouble before.
Ug. Found this thread after taking Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic drops after a cornea transplant. I have to take this for one full year, and have not yet had surgery on the other eye. Possibly next month. I've had low grade nausea since, very similar to my own early stages of pregnancy when I was younger (and no, that's not a possibility). Obviously I'll live with this in order to save my sight, but I'm so tired of feeling nauseous. Guess I'll have to live with it.
Google for a technique to prevent the eye drops from going down your throat - I finally figured out that's what was happening with me. The drops were going into my tear ducts and then down my throat. I think the reason they don't list digestive issues as a side effect if because it's used topically so they list just the topical side effects. Not everyone has the tear duct and down the throat problem. Anyhow, I started taking OTC Prevacid about the time I finished my drops and after a few days the stomach problems are diminishing.
So glad others are feeling the same as i am. I thought it was me. All the side effect sites of pred forte do not list nausea or gas etc. I have been having these side effects since i had my eye operation. Am down to two drops a day now then next week one drop. Cant wait to get off this stuff.
Thank God I found this thread. I have been using the same eye drops before and now after cataract surgery. I was told one day after surgery I must continue the drops for one month. I am so sick I can't eat and I am unable to get out of bed. I cannot continue. I can taste the drops and I know I am swallowing. I am going to call the Dr office Monday and ask for help.
I have had gastric distress and diahrea since starting on Pred Forte 2 days ago. So glad I came across these posts! I’m going to request getting off of them sooner.
Me too!! Thanks for this thread. I have been gassy and crampy since on the post-cataract drops of Prednisolone Acetate. Thought of going to the doctor but it started the same time as using the drops so I think it's that. Tomorrow is my last dose of 4x a day, but then I have to have the other eye done next week. Has anyone had the gassy/crampy symptoms? I'm also going into my third year of a daily dose of Prednisone for my Polymyalgia Rheumatica so I wonder if that might be affecting it too... any thoughts welcomed.
can anyone confirm that the stomach and gas symptoms stopped after stopping the Prednisolone?
No connection? Seriously?
The eyes are literally connected via the tear ducts to the sinuses and throat. Your drops can drain into your sinuses and throat, which is why you sometimes have the sensation of the drops rolling down your throat and sometimes taste them.
I started these drops 5 days ago, and I have felt nauseous since. My educated guess is that our drops are rolling down our throats into our stomachs, causing nausea and a general overall sick feeling, since the drops weren't intended to be ingested.
Right on... makes so much sense. Exactly what is happening to me. Cataract surgery 3 days ago and I've been on the drops and nauseated ever since...
I was glad to find this thread as I too feel very sick, slightly unwell and have bad stomach since taking post cataract op eye drops. I am not stressed or dyspeptic , i know my body, this is not in my mind and its annoying to be told this! Nothing about nausea on drug side effect list. Will report via yellow card scheme and urge others affected to do the same. Diane
Glad to come across this! Just started Prednisolone 1% drops today -- EVERY HOUR for inflammation (possibly due to known MS or new uveitis) -- for ONE WEEK. Started feeling nauseous and went on line to see if it's a known side effect. I, too have yucky taste in sinus and throat. Found info that suggested placing and holding finger to inner corner of eye for 2 to 3 minutes after the drop to prevent "leaking" (in sinus cavity?) to reduce side-effects. I'm also drinking my go-to remedy for upset tummy-- green tea with ginger! Long week ahead :(
Sometimes im so glad for Internet! I have terrible reactions to drugs but when I was given pred forte for an eye condition I had NO idea that a single drop in the eye could cause such a reaction. First felt it down the throat yuk then feels like my stomach kind of seizes up. Horrible. Prednisone is nasty. I'm going to search for a natural remedy when I can remember what the condition is called. Something to do with the cornia tearing and lifting off. Happens after eye damage ie a scratch/ scar.

Two weeks ago at my post pterygium surgery checkup, I mentioned that I have been feeling nauseous. I wanted to know if any of the meds I was taking, including the Prednisolone Acetate Suspension, could cause the nausea. The doctor said she had never heard any complaints from her patients. I know she is wrong, especially after reading this column. I mentioned I could taste the medication as it dripped down my nasal cavity and she said to close off my nasal passage by pressing down in the area with my finger. I'm using this med 6 times a day and it is a real inconvenience. Is this a substitute for this type of medication?
I had Lasik eye surgery on January 28, had to take Prednisolone eye drops for 7 days afterwards. A few days after my last round of drops I began feeling acid reflux type symptoms. I have had a reaction to pred in the past, so I absolutely think there is a correlation. It's now March and I've been to three different doctors and had a scope down my nose and throats at the ENT. Everything looked fine except a little inflammation near voice cords. I'm constantly worried that it's something bigger, but I literally just put two and two together and now thinking it was all from the steroid eye drops. Hoping, like last time, it will just work itself back out. Taking Protonix in the morning, drinking alone Vera juice, doing probiotics, eating clean, avoiding coffee, sometimes having to pop a Zantac at night. Just want my body to regulate!
I started takin these drops after LASIK surgery last week. I have searched the net looking to see if anyone else has had these symptoms and have not found any others who have the same symptoms. At first I couldn't figure out what was making me so ill feeling, however I have come to the conclusion that is is the Prednisolone. I begin to feel "sick" within minutes of taking the drops. Stomach discomfort, nausea, and an overall feeling of discontent. I was supposed to take the drops through today, but I just couldn't get myself to use them at work today. I'm sorry you are feeling sick, but I wonder if it is some sort of allergy we have to this medication. I'm hoping that I regain my energy as it seems to have taken a bit of a toll on me. I wish you the best and hopefully you get well soon.
I am on my last week of the Prednisolone... down to one drop a day. I feel somewhat better since I went from 4 a day, to 3 drops a day, to 2 drops a day and now one drop a day over a 4 week span but still have GAS and fatique. I know this can get into the system as I can taste the eye medicine trickling into the throat. If my cataract was not so big and thick, I would never of had it taken out. Took a special machine to break it up. I am a procrastinator. I hate taking meds and I hate getting old. (-: Everyone knows their body well. If things feel different after using a new med, it usually is the medication. Wishing everyone better days ahead.
This post is 6 1/2 years old and I googled this very question just now. I am having the same reaction but my med is called Prednisolone Acetate. (she is taking similar/in the same family) This is a post cataract medication and it is doing a number on my abdomen and bowels and Yes, a sickly feeling like the other poster said. I had the first cataract 6 years ago and did not remember this but I sure do now. I am also on Vigamox and Ketorolac... all post op meds for cataract removal. )-:
I am looking today at this same issue of the upset stomach after using cataract drops prior and still using... it has been 3 weeks since starting on these. Incidentally the eye developed a scratched cornea and had to be scraped, and using two more eye meds. My stomach has been queasy ever since using eye drops... PRED-GAB-NEPAL... now on OUREZOL and ZYMAXID... have been on pain regimen for years and deal with constipation, but now with the eye drops all has changed, but causes an upset stomach...
I had cataract surgeries on 1/22/18 & 2/05/18 and also used Prednisolone. I know the drops were going via tear ducts & down my throat, I could taste it. After a week or so I started waking up in the middle of the night with hunger pangs that over another week progressed to stomach cramps and mild nausea at night and early morning. Then not just at night but every time my stomach was empty. It's been about 9 days since I finished the drops. For the past 5 days I've been taking OTC Prevacid and the stomach issue is starting to diminish. I'm convinced it was the Prednisolone. I think it irritated my stomach, causing too much stomach acid.
I am so glad that I found this site because now I know what I am experiencing is
not the flu.
I don’t know how old these posts are, but I googled this very question today, just now. I am having the same reaction, but my med is called Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP
Days after I started using these eye drops after eye LASIK surgery, I have been feeling sick to the stomach, Nauseous, and feeling sick and fatigue, like the other people on the post have said and it is also affecting my bowel movement. I have been constipated and I normally have no problems with this issue. No one, absolutely no one can tell me that this medication is not causing these symptoms since so many people are complaining literally about similar symptoms. I go back to the doctor on December 3, 2018 for LASIK surgery on my right eye and I am not looking forward to it. In the meantime, I will be letting the doctor know that I will need to use some other eye drops.
It seems like most or some of the people who wrote a post, they were using this med for post cataract medication, or something to do with Cataract procedures, but I am using it for the bad complications I experienced after my LASIK surgery on my L eye for the beginning stage of Glaucoma. Wishing everyone to feel much better and God bless everyone.
Havent' heard of these symptoms but we are all connected. I am wondering too if it is nerves that is causing upset stomach, etc.. I wonder have you been taking anything else new in the way of medicine that would cause these symptoms? For example; pain medication, etc... Just a thought, I am no expert. know that can affect me... I believe that some of my sinus problems and earaches were caused by long term use of the Pred Mild drops... I had a terrible time getting off these drops and was on them wayyyyyyyyy too long of a period... long term side affects not good but after trying a few times to slowly wean off them I can now say that it is day 24 and hope I never go back on any type of steroid drops. If you are really concerned see your family doctor and discuss if it continues.
Thank you, LJA, I appreciate your post. I just got back from doing more lab work... Anyway... I talked with my nice, wonderful, regular eye doctor and he just asked if I could hang with the PredForte for 5 days more... so I could be assured there was no more swelling because that could spell trouble. I'll make it somehow. I am 73 yrs old and have all my life without ANY meds and rarely went to the dr. Am into alternative. THEN comes the pre op for the cataracts which resulted in BP med and a cholesterol pill! :( Neither one was that 'high' but it was a requirement for the surgery... So NOW to get myself back to health so I can get OFF those pills and take my herbs as they have been my medicine for many many years.
So, yes, a lot of it has been really bad nerves... They discovered 'a mild case' of Fuch's Dystrophy in the L eye... didn't tell me til a wk after the L eye surgery... but I stewed and fretted ANYway cuz it was not a miraculous overnight healing like the R eye... but it will all be OK... just need to go with the flow and let it all go... and let is pass.
Thanks again! :)
I wish you good luck... try not to worry... easy to say right? But,just trust that things will improve over the next few weeks and you will be back on track.
Hi again!
I actually got some 'validation' today and yes, there CAN be systemic reactions from Pred Forte even though they are RARE... I got a call from a doctor where I had my eye surgery done and we had a talk... plus he gave me some ideas how I could take the eyedrops with less danger of them being absorbed into my system. I just wish they would have told me that three weeks ago... but, its all OK... 3 more days of drops...
I did have a talk with my own medical doctor today, also... and all the latest lab tests came back ok... which further validated that it was, indeed, the Pred Forte. This is not to 'scare' anybody... I do believe this is 'rare'... but the 'rare' still happens.
THANK YOU BOTH for your responses!!
At least you got some answers... where I am that is hard to get even at the eye clinic where the specalists are for some reason... ummm - I worry about the long term affects being on Pred Mild for soooooo long for red, irritated eyes (because they tried other kinds of drops without any success) what the effects will be in the future for me ... It is Day 28 today since I finally got off them and I am still holding my breathe about it all... they are red but not paining thank goodness. Hard to face the world with red, irritated eyes but I am having better luck this time getting off the steroid drops. Feel free to let me know how you are doing...
I've been on pred Forte for 2yrs. I feel all messed up. I've sprained my ankle more in the last few months than I have in my whole life. Sometimes feel dizzy for say 15 mins then goes away then comes back sometimes and sometimes not. Throughout the day. I dont know if this drop is causing it along with the other 3 or what?

Pred Forte usually does not cause systemic effects. It could just be coincidental that you have been feeling bad at this time. Have you spoken to your PCP about how you are feeling? I would recommend you see your primary care physician for evaluation. The only other thing is that sometimes, when some peoples vision is off or blurred, it can cause them to feel sick. The period when you have the first eye done and the other eye is still bad can really throw your vision off and this can make some people who are sesitive to this feel poorly. If this is the case, feeling poorly should subside once the eyes are fully healed (about 4 weeks after sugery) and once you get a new eyeglass Rx if you need one.
Thank you, DzooBaby, for your comment. I do have appt for Lab work... and I know it would be rare... but my daughter, also, is highly sensitive to Prednizone of any kind and ended up in emergency ... so ... its all a little iffy. Again, thank you very much.
I started taking pred forte after cataract surgery which required a stitch for the new lens that remains in for twenty days. My stomach has been experiencing discomfort since I started using the drops. The slight amount of steroids in the drops can affect the stomach, I was told by my eye doctor.
