How long does it take for suprep to work?

92 Answers Page 3

If you drink it within 10-15 minutes, it sucks but it'll work quicker. Drink the two 16 ounce water only within an hour or less. You won't be up all night or waiting long. For those who feel like they'd throw up, get a prescription for Ondansetron. It's anti nausea. It'll help you keep it down. You'll likely feel more cramps and pain but at least it'll be quick acting.

It tastes horrible, no way around that.

The responses were very helpful to me so I thought I would add to the conversation. My experience wasn't that bad. I followed many of the tips here. Laptop, phone, something warm to put on just in case, vasoline and wet wipes. Yes, the taste is nasty but tolerable. For me, I held my nose and drank a few gulps at a time over 15 minutes through a straw. I took the first round at about 5:00 pm and it started working in about 30 minutes. Drinking the subsequent 32 oz. of water wasn't too difficult for me. I gave myself 15 minutes per 16 oz. and it worked out fine. For the next 2 hours, I just Nextflix and chilled with my laptop. After that, I felt comfortable enough to leave the restroom and made two more visits before I went to be. The next round started at 7 am with pretty much the same process and same results. Although the evacuation was a bit easier since most everything was cleared out on the first round.

Like most of you, I was pretty anxious about the whole thing but it hasn't been as bad as I built it up to be. About the best advice I can give on top of what has already been given is trust that the medicine will work and that your doctors will do their job well.

This is better than having that big gallon jug staring you in the face.
I took my first dose ay 3:30 p.m. And less than 10 minutes later I was on the toilet. My doctor says to drink the 2nd dose 4 to 6 hrs after completing 1st dose including the water. I'll do that in 4 hours so hopefully I can be completely done and get some sleep before tomorrow's procedure. I'll give update on 2nd dose.

I was on a liquid diet yesterday except for one light meal. I also took a dose of milk of magnesia last night. Today my liquid diet consisted of bone broth, chamomile tea, apple juice, Snapple orange flavor & water. Took first dose of prep tonight at 7:00pm & immediately drank 2 16-oz glass of water. Tasted bad but tolerable. Felt a little nauseous at 7:40pm. My first rush to bathroom started at 8:00pm. I’m waiting to see when the next rush will be. I’m drinking herbal tea now to take nastiness out of my mouth. I am assuming that the lighter your diet the day before and the day of your first dose will determine how fast you the suprep starts working. Everyone innards are different. Tomorrow i’ll take my second dose about 5:30-6:00 am since I have to leave home by 9:00am for my procedure. I just hope that’s enough time since I have a 90 minute ride on express bus.

It took about 45 minutes for the prep to work. The first time I mixed Crystal Light in the prep. It didn't make a difference to me. It was horrible to drink and by far the worst part of the entire experience. I got it down in about 15 minutes and then continued drinking cold water. All that cold water made me very cold. The purge part was far less than I expected. I did put myself on a very low fiber diet three days prior. I was hangry but I would rather be hangry than suffer through violent diarrhea. The second prep I alternated sipping the prep and room temperature water. I think that is a better way to go but be careful not to drink too fast. I did and vomited a good bit the solution. I was worried about that but had about the same level of activity and the output was pretty clear. My doctor told me vomiting during the second session is common. I was well prepared with wipes, ointment, hard candy, movies and newspapers. I didn't really need any of it.

I was in the bathroom an hour or so. I started with a Vaseline barrier and that seemed to do the trick for me. I was able to sleep just fine and the colonoscopy part was a breeze. You just don't feel very good after putting your body through all that and the drugs. No side effects whatsoever with the scoping part.

I am so worried about tomorrow. I had a hard time getting it down. The 3 containers (1 diluted Suprep and 2 waters) took me almost an hour. Then... I got sick 5 times. If most of the medicine is out, I'm not sure if I will have much success. I don't want them to reschedule me. Scared to take the rest in the AM. Any recommendations?

So glad I found this post! I was an hour or so out from my first dose and thought I'd google to see how long I'd be making trips to the bathroom. I found so much helpful stuff in all these posts - I just couldn't stop reading!!!

So, I took the first dose at 5pm. I mixed it with cold sprite zero (I'm on weight watchers) and inserted a straw. I had the prep down in about 20 minutes. The taste was like cherry medicine. I've had worse - but I have never continued to drink 16oz of cherry medicine. The last 2 ounces were a battle and I had to do some swishing around with unaltered Sprite Zero to rinse the taste between sips. I don't know if I was nauseous or if that was too fast to chug bad tasting sprite zero down, but I was burping. SO - for tomorrow's dose, I'll be mixing with cold water instead - and putting the Suprep in the fridge now so it's all cold (good tip I found on here).

Expand...

Again, I'll use a straw.

Then I fixed 16oz of sprite zero on ice and drank that quickly (the Suprep taste coats your gums and is so gross), and then I decided I'd skip the carbonation and had 16oz of water flavored with orange Mio.

I didn't experience any of the cramping, bloating, etc. BUT - my doctor asked if I have a bowel movement every day - and I don't - so she recommended that I take a stool softener every day for the week before the prep. I'm going to say that was a wise idea after reading some of the comments!

About 45 minutes after starting the prep, I felt like I was going to pass gas - and wisely thought... "better not" - and went to the bathroom. I was halfway through my second 16 oz glass of water. I didn't spend any marathons on the toilet - maybe a 15 minute stay the first time, and then subsequent trips every 5-10 minutes or so. I'm wearing comfy sweatpants that are easy on/off, too. Another thing I'd recommend is Balmex or Desitin - that stuff is awesome - and reapply throughout (your bum will thank you). Wet wipes, too. The wet wipes are good for your bum and also to get the diaper creme off your finger before washing your hands! Soap doesn't do it.

I got cold - but I am ALWAYS cold - so I didn't think anything of it until I read that a lot of other people (who aren't normally cold) got cold, too! Lucky for me, I had an wifi controlled thermostat installed yesterday and had my phone app with me to raise the heat to 75 degrees in the house. That, and socks, and I felt better - but still cold with my drawers down. I'm ready for tomorrow morning at 6 am with a space heater set up and pointing at the toilet (another tip from here)!

The running to the bathroom lasted about 2.5 hours with frequency decreasing in the last 45 minutes. By the end, the liquid was mostly clear. I was consuming broth and popsicles throughout the "purge," and I've gone to the bathroom since 8:30, and I only had to pee - the normal way! I feel optimistic that I'll sleep well tonight. I hope I can go to bed early since the Suprep dose time is 6 am. I'm feeling a little hungry tonight - but not homicidal - which I was sure I would be.

It's helpful to read tips from everyone else, so read the variety available and you may gleen something new. Here's to hoping tomorrow is as relatively easy and that I can shower before I depart for the hospital and make the 25 minute drive there!

This is absolutely the worst bowel prep I’ve ever used. The taste of that liquid made me very nauseous and I was vomiting before I even finished it. Taste is disgusting and it smells like perfumed salt water. Took effect within 10 minutes and 3 1/2 hours later I'm still running to the bathroom. I really wonder how I’m ever going to drink this gross liquid again at 3 AM. Not looking forward to it. I hope I never have to do this again because I’ll refuse if I need to use this prep !

First dose was at 5pm, and while most people can manage to get it down, I nearly puked with each sip - went through an entire container of concentrated lime juice, chasing it after every sip, and it took a whole hour and a half to get through. I started getting urges to go to the bathroom near the end, but it wasn't bad, so I held off; ended up abandoning the last 1/10th of the container for the bathroom. I had an extremely hard time getting the water down while on the toilet, managed to get through sixteen ounces over the next two hours. It was entirely liquid, and anything that went down sprayed right on out. I'd been on a liquid diet that entire day, and things have always moved through me fairly quickly, so after seventeen hours fasting there was nothing solid left anyways. After two hours, around 8:30pm, I was able to stand and move around - made three trips back, with almost no warning, and it was close to a disaster every time.

I drank 48 ounces of broth after standing to warm me up, and hopefully help with the dehydration; had a headache for a bit, but it eventually passed. Around 11pm, I felt confident enough to go to sleep, woke up at 5am entirely unrelated. It's now 6am, I'm able to go to the bathroom and only urinate which I wasn't doing before. Scheduled to take the next dose at 8am for a 12pm appointment, but I've decided to start it at 7am and not mix it with the water, since nearly tripling the amount of it is only going to make it harder. Starting an hour early because it's a 30 minute drive to the hospital from my house, and I'm not confident a 3.5 hour window is enough time to be able to hold the stool in. Hopefully, the morning dose won't be as bad.

As others have said, the taste is not that great, but not that bad either. I had no trouble getting it down. I think I was overly worried about nausea etc, but had none to speak of. Took the first dose at 7pm (a little late) then about 45 minutes later had my first movement, followed by a few more over the next hour. Was basically ok by 9:00. Nothing uncontrollable, just very liquid. Had plenty of time to get to the toilet. I just took the second dose a few minutes ago, so we'll see how it goes, but hopeful that it's as controllable as last night :)

Hi everyone. I'm having a diagnostic colonoscopy and upper endoscopy tomorrow to check for IBD as I have many symptoms and it runs in the family as well. I can tell you the taste for me was like a disgusting, salty grape solution. HOWEVER... it's tolerable if the prep is chilled and cold water is added to it. I may not have had much to get rid of as the process on night one lasted for around two hours after taking dose one (night before dose). Things I noticed about the prep.
1. I haven't been eating much lately and maybe that helped make it more tolerable?
2. I had some additional cramping besides where it normally presents. It wasn't horrible however.
3. Had a little bit of nausea... But that could be because I have already had that and added with the taste... it contributed perhaps. My doctor said I could chase the solution with Crystal Light lemonade. Be sure to ask your doctor if you might be able to do something similar.

4. As I believe I stated above... total time was around an two hours +/- 10 mins. If your perhaps maybe making the process easier maybe ask the doctor if it would help to go on a low residue diet in the 3 days before the colonoscopy. I didn't have much choice with what's going on. Ask your doctor for suggestions to make it easier if your concerned.
5. Stay hydrated. I wasn't able to due to certain things as much as I would have liked... and am slightly dehydrated. So please make sure your as hydrated as possible if your able
6. Most of important of all. Follow the instructions your doctor gives you. Don't deviate from them. If you have any questions for your doctor nearing the colonoscopy. Don't be afraid to ask him or her. My GI and his office was extreme helpful. Your doctor should be as well as they want the best prep possible as to not have to repeat the process.

Good luck on your Suprep bowel prep and on your colonoscopies!!! I hope this helped. In actuality this wasn't to bad and while not enjoyable... nothing to get to worked up about in my opinion. Of course everyone is different. :)

Took the first dose at 6:50 pm. It doesn't taste great but not the worst thing either. First BM around 7:30. No real discomfort other than feeling chilled. Shortly after that, I was on the toilet off and on every few minutes for an hour or so then less frequently for the next two hours. Slept from 10:30 until my alarm went off at 5 with no problems. Second dose at 5:20 am. A lot of trips to the bathroom and some chills. After about 2 hours, I seem to be empty. Made it to the hospital with no need to stop. It would be nice if the Drs office would give you some idea what to expect but I'm glad I found it here.

Let me first start by saying my response directly addresses only to the first part of the question asked. Like the question seeker, I wanted to know how long after completing the 6 oz of Suprep mixed with the 10 oz of water before I would begin to feel its, er, effects. I have no idea how long I will be a prisoner of my bathroom, but I am quite comfortable here with my laptop, books, cooler, and Squatty Potty. Perhaps this is how the Man in the Iron Masque felt; not wholly deprived, but still longing for freedom. But I digress, I began consuming the Suprep concoction at 5:58 p.m. Its unique blend of flavors seeking to masque the epsom salt (which it mostly achieves) does not agree with my tastebuds. I literally suffered through this concoction for 30 minutes, making faces, and sipping on my chicken broth. Such dallying only gave me a 30 minute window of time to complete the 32 ounce water consumption. Within 5 minutes of my last sip of the Suprep, came the first assault.

I figured since it was mostly solid that this was residual waste from another transaction, and that the terrorist attacks on my bowels would ensue within the 1 to 5 hour timeframe (according to the paperwork my GI gave me). Inaccurate. After making a brief sabbatical from the toilet, I quickly returned to its welcoming seat. Tomorrow morning at 3:30 a.m. I will get up, pour, drink, and repeat. It seems in this forum that there is a split between those of us who experience the immediacy of this drug v. those who suffer the waiting effects. If you are fortunate enough (yes, I say fortunate enough) to fall into the immediacy group, I gather that your suffering will be expedited. If you are in the latter, you have my sympathies. In either event, colonoscopy prep is not terrible, but it's worth the research and the prep before the prep. Cozy on up to that throne of yours, and make the space yours. :) - Oh, and an added tip - if you're like me, you will get cold, so find a way to bundle on up and wear thick, cozy socks. I believe in you!

I just did this 3 days ago and basically once you start using the suprep you'll drink it with the water and then you'll continue with two more cups of water within minutes it will be flowing out your rear end as a liquid I found it was best just to sit in the bathroom as it only lasts between 20 minutes to an hour then you can go to bed till the next day and repeat the performance again might as well just sit in the bathroom for an hour as you have no control it just flows right out of you it was so easy and I used extra cold water to make it go down quicker my results were perfect and I'm so happy

First time colonoscopy and endoscopy so wasn’t sure what to expect. This site was a lifesaver!
Let’s be honest. When has medicine ever tasted good? I was expecting the worst after reading some comments so I guess expecting it to be miserable helped but it wasn’t that bad. Ever had an MRI and had to drink the think stuff? This is a piece of cake compared to that.
After my first sip I realized I would need to add something to cut down the sweet and salt taste of cough syrup disguised as water. I added a little crystal light lemon and it helped. Like many others I had the Suprep in the fridge and drank it cold with very cold water mixed in. That and having a straw to help gulp it down definitely helped. I read about lemons and limes to suck on after I already had my first dose. Drats!

Expand...

It seems most people started feeling effects immediately. I did not. I was expecting to so I sat on the toilet for 20 mins but nothing happened except I was extremely nauseous. I sniffed some peppermint oil and that helped the nausea a little.
I then sat on the bed watching the clock getting ready to sprint the the bathroom. After 90 mins of waiting and dealing with bloating, cramps and nausea I was beginning to think I was one of those people this just wouldn’t work on and I would be cramping all night. Then at 2 hours I had a small urge to go to the bathroom probably because of all the water. Then it kicked in! When people say it’s like you are peeing from your butt they aren’t kidding. That’s exactly what it feels like. It lasted on and off for 2-3 hours. I was able to sleep through the night and woke at 6a for round 2.

Next round much much harder to get down but I suspect some of that is mental. I tried drinking it much slower this time hoping it would ease my nausea. I think it helped a little. I also chased each sip with ginger ale which helped with the after taste. At 40 mins I was back in the bathroom and things were happening again. My appt isn’t until noon so I have a little time to get everything out.
Overall I was expecting a miserable night and it wasn’t bad at all. Luckily I was able to start early enough the first day that I could sleep through the night. I wouldn’t want to do this often however once every few years isn’t that bad. Get in a good mindset and know that you are cleaning out potentially years of toxins in your system.
So in short, everyone’s experience is different and do what YOU need to do to make it easier on you. Like many I did get the chills as well and even put a small heater into my bathroom to keep me warm. My husband thought I was moving in since I had bottles of water, heater, hard candies, bowl in case I threw up, iPad and headphones. Good luck and don’t be nervous. :)
