it was prescribed for my post-partum depression and i havent had the chance to get my new one filled. it says discard after july 2009. i was wondering if maybe it has weakened overtime, become more potent, or toxic. should i take it until i get my new script filled or just trash it?
Hi friends. I have a script for effexor xr. its out of date, can I still take it?

Yes you can still take it. Medication is still good after the date on the bottle. When I worked at an animal emergency clinic, the veterinarian told me that expired meds are fine to take. Just not anything like 20 years old because then it is less effective.
Hey Lisa, some meds are actually dangerous to take after they have expired, anything with Tylenol is NOT good to take if it is old, the acetaminophen gets stronger and can mess up your liver.
Maybe they're ok for dogs to take but I wouldn't trust old meds on a person, actually not on my dogs either.
And honestly, Pharmacists are the true experts on meds, not even the doctors, although we tend to believe the doctor about medications like they are the experts.
thank you ladies for your comments. i DID get it filled today! well, my fiance did cuz i didnt get motivated... but i still got it! i hope it helps. i know it takes a couple of weeks to feel the full effect, but its well worth the wait if it helps. i took it in 2008 for my post-partum depression and it worked wonders. i hope it still has that effect on me now.
you can do it Mellisab... put on those shoes and fill that script. Even doing that you will feel you accomplished something! And just think, in a few weeks, the meds may help you feel even more motivated and able to accomplish so much more! We are all pulling for you.
My best wishes to you,
Chris
thanks Chris, i swear im gonna do it today! my pharmacy closes at 1pm on saturday, so... i just woke up, trying to get motivated... IM GONNA DO IT! lol i keep telling myself that. hopefully i really will. i know it will help.
Let us know as soon as you get back! No excuses... get it done and get your life back on track. I'll be waiting patiently. I don't want to hear "My dog ate my script.".

It has become less potent, less effective and more toxic, just throw them away it has been 13 months, they are completely of no good use to you, flush them, you do not want to take any risks at this stage in your life.
I would not take them.
All the best,
Andres
thanks maso, if i can get off the freakin couch i will go get my script filled. it just takes soooo much effort!
