It seems that since I've been taking Lyrica it seems that my teeth have been "demineralizing" of sorts. Starting with enamel chipping and flaking off in medium sizes, then larger pieces and the inside 'pulp' of my teeth has become spongy. I have had pain with this on top of the pain caused by my Fibromyalgia and my Chronic Post-Herpetic Neuralgia.
If you know of any other patients that have had this same problem -- I am 50 years old, I've been on Lyrica now for over 6 months. I have had PHN since 2000 and was diagnosed with FM less than a year ago, although my doctors and I could trace my symptoms back more than 7 years.
Have there been any problems with the use of Lyrica for FM or PHN and dental problems?

In the past two weeks I have had two healthy teeth extracted due to fractures that were unseen on x-rays. Granite indo clinch but have for years. I now have another tooth I believe is fractured or. eruptured. This tooth will probably be removed even though no started wearing a guard almost 24/7 That will be three in three weeks. I only take it out to talk.I started taking Lyrica about six months ago. How can another healthy tooth fracture or break with a guard. This needs to be looked into. I will be telling my pain physicians that I may have to stop using it. I'm seeing the oral surgeon Again tomorrow.
Approx 7-8 years ago i was put on Lyrica for Peripheral Neuropathy. 200 mg 3 times a day with
Hydrocodone. Approx 2 years ago my teeth started breaking, crumbline and just falling out of
my mouth. I was told that Lyrica dries your teeth out and thats what makes the crumble and fall out. I have lost approx all my teeth and to get implants it's anywhere from 40 to 60 thousand dollars. Needless to say I can't afford that and right now I don't know what I will do.
Yes! Approximately 6 months after being prescribed Lyrica, my teeth needed a host of root canals, fillings, ect. Fast forward 9 years and I require ALL of my remaining, natural teeth removed and replaced with an implant prosthetic. ANYONE who has experienced the same, PLEASE report this to the FDA. It is THE ONLY way for them to conduct an examination and make a determination!!!
Wow! I have bad teeth too, just had 3 pulled! My dentist says dry mouth is the worst culprit of tooth decay and most medications have dry mouth as a side effect. I also grind my teeth and have acid reflux, so triple whammy. I was on gabapentin for several years, tryed lyrica a few months but side effects were too scary. I had sensitive teeth before, getting a filling would usually lead to a root canal but it's worse in the last 10 years which is also when I started taking pain meds. It may just be inevitable, opioids are especially bad for teeth. You could try using dry mouth sprays, prescription strength toothpaste. The sugar xylitol is also good for teeth and there are a lot of xylitol products out there like hard candy, gum, etc.
Hi suslydic!
I had a very bad experience with Lyrica--dizziness. In fact, I fell down and hit my head on my coffee table. So I stopped the med quick as I started it. I take Neurontin (generic is Gabapentin) 800 mg. and Adderall for my ADHD. Both are a combination made in Heaven--they reduce, nay, practically stop completely the horrible pain I've experienced with Fibromyalgia and Neuropathy. I"m not suggesting you act accordingly, just sharing my experience.
I once had perfect white teeth. That was before Lyrica and Cymbalta. Now I have multiple cavities. One tooth broke down the middle and one broke off at the gum line. My gums are swollen and sore. I’m scared that when I actually get brave enough to go to my next dentist appointment I’m going to have to get dentures. I hate these drugs and I think they should be taken off the market! I have tapered off Lyrica and I am slowly tapering off Cymbalta now. I can’t wait to finally get done with these drugs and try to work on getting healthy again. They have taken 10 years from me and I can gladly say that in a short time they will never take one more day from me.
I had the same problem with gabapentin (Neurontin). 4 incidents of absessed roots (one involved 4 front teeth). Then all my teeth seemed loose and painful, which was a new experience for me, I looked at what had changed. It was using gabapentin and no longer using ibuprofen, which had caused serious stomach issues. I immediately stopped using the drug, which has left me with no pain control. I added an extra multi vitamin, extra camcium and D as well as more B and sub lingual b12. It has been 2 months and teeth are not as painful and most are again tight. I figured my choice was pain or dentures. Gabapentin and Lyrica are the same drug family and work similarly. I had hoped my next try would be Lyrica, but I guess not!
Since I've gone on Lyrica, I have mystified my dentist, and given him thousands of dollars of my business I could not afford! I've struggled to keep, but ultimately lost, more than half my natural teeth, all for the same reason: they have broken into pieces! He assumed it was poor hygiene, but why would I pay all that & go through all that pain and then not take any care of them?! I never thought it was the Lyrica, but several websites and some Pages & Groups on social networking sites like Facebook have similar stories from other people who have used Lyrica. I have also found that a number of other things that have happened to me are due to Lyrica. So, I've learned I do need to stop taking it. Since I've been taking it for 5 years, I will have to be taken off of it very carefully to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms. I am taking it for both epilepsy and fibromyalgia, so I will need to see a neurologist for another anticonvulsant first.
I was just at the dentist all morning. I can literally feel my teeth getting worse every week. They are starting to believe me more and more at the dentist office that this is being caused by Lyrica but still want to blame it on grinding my teeth (which I don't do). Can you tell me the websites and Pages & Groups that you found where others are talking about their dental issues since taking Lyrica? I took over 2 months to titrate very slowly off of Lyrica and onto another anticonvulsant (I've been on over 13 different ones over many years) - just go slow. The damage is done however and all my teeth still need crowns or bridges. I called Pfizer's adverse effects phone line and that was answered in India. I did go online and reported the problem with the FDA.
I figure at some point in the future in 5 or 10 yrs down the road enought people will have this problem and there will be a class action lawsuit against Pfizer and we can try to get some of the $20-30,000 we are having to spend at the dentist that we can't afford. In the meantime, the irony is that I'm switching to a soft food diet since I really can't chew anymore and with the medication I've switched to I've lost most of my sense of taste!
I'm obviously coming to this party late, but I did a web search just on the outside chance that I might find if other people are experiencing dental issues and they take Lyrica. I have been on Lyrica 600mg/day since it first came out in the U.S. about 6-7 yrs ago. It has been a tremendous help for my PHN. I've had good teeth until about a year ago. Three different dentists have said that I need major, major work done as my teeth are completely eroded and worn down (even the nationally known dental school nearby said I needed a "complete mouth restoration" at $20k). In process of my first bridge being completed, have another one of those to do and then the remainder of my teeth need crowns. Up until then my dental health was good, I went to the dentist twice a year for check ups and cleaning. I started wondering if this might be a side effect of the Lyrica.
I have been on antiseizure meds for approx 30 yrs (I'm 48) for PHN but my gut has always wondered what long term side effects there might be while taking the max dose of a new drug (Lyrica). I have taken narcotics for years as well and when it was discovered that they can leach calcium from your body I had a bone density test in 2005. That all came back fine. Has anyone contacted Pfizer to make a formal complaint?
I believe it is after what I am experiencing. I am horrified. I have always taken care of my teeth. I am so upset. I just started looking things up on the internet recently. I wish I had years ago.
Absolutely, 100 per cent YES, to Lyrica being the problem! A person was placed on Lyrica for SEVEN months. Prior to taking Lyrica, he had perfect teeth; Orthodontia, seeing Dentist regularly, never needing any major work on his teeth. Unfortunately, like you, during his treatment with Lyrica, his enamel began to erode, his teeth started hurting, then BAM, all of his front teeth crumbled out of his mouth. No sign of gum disease, no use of illicit drugs, simply taking Pfizer's Lyrica. So far, he has undergone NINE root canals, restorative Dental Treatment and spent 25K dollars. He still needs an implant (front tooth) and all of his front teeth capped. So, he is looking at another 25K dollars, just to get back to "normal". I have never witnessed anything like it. His Dentists called it "Disease X", because they were so baffled.
The Endodontist said, each time he began drilling, into any tooth, it would completely "explode", like an empty egg shell.
So, NO, the problem with your teeth is NOT your disease, it is the Lyrica! This person I am speaking about, is actually taking legal action against Pfizer. Within those SEVEN months, besides the complete annihilation of his front teeth, he also went from 160 pounds to 240 pounds. Then, when he stopped taking Lyrica, the withdrawals were so horrific, that he needed to be put on Benzodiazepines. If you search the internet, you will find a lot of supporting information regarding these side effects, with Lyrica. It is a terrible medication. I have seen a lot of "side effects"for all classes of medication, but NEVER anything like Lyrica!
I am truly sorry that you found this out after your teeth were effected, however, get in to a Dentist, tell them the story and STOP the Lyrica immediately! Again, the withdrawals will be terrible, so you might need your Physician's assistance in helping you off.
Good Luck!
By the way, I have the photos of before, after and the "temporary" fix. If I can post them here, I will. I'm not sure what the rules of the web site are, concerning posting photos.
Sadly I have been taking Lyrica since 2009 after my accident. I had wonderful teeth. I have never smoked, drank, done drugs anything. I have had so much tooth pain and now have deep pockets and have gum disease. I just do not understand it. I wish someone would have told me. This is not acceptable. Now they are saying I need to see some specialist. I have had beautiful white healthy teeth which I have always taken care of. I would tell everybody do not take Lyrica.
PLEASE SHARE THIS AND SPREAD THE WORD!!
You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088
Have you spoke to your dentist? Or, has your doctor said that would be one of the side effects? I would have that checked out as soon as possible. You might find out one day that you don't have any teeth left...
i had alot of side effects with liyrica . i had more pain and i would shake bad . but i did not notice any teeth problems . i would call my dr asap and ask about the ide effects .
