I am 55 years old and very active, walking going to gym a couple of times a week. Recently I started on lisinopril for high blood pressure, 10 mgs. I have gained 10 pounds in a month, and feel concerned.
Has anyone experienced weight gain from lisinopril 10 mgs?

I started taking lisinopril in May 2016 and I've been taking it on and off and whenever I'm on it I feel fatigued, hungry and headaches. Each time I gain 15 to 30 pounds. I recently stopped taking it again and I'm simply taking a diuretic with my healthy eating and staying active.
Im losing weight and I feel so much better. This medicine is horrible and I'm going to do what I can never to take it again.
I am finally off of lisinopril. After 3 yrs. of complaining, I confronted my DR on my continued high bp. He increased the dosage and my bp when through the roof... ended up in ER. After a few more rounds with the doctors, and doing my own research, I can happily say that I am now on diltiazem and my bp has dropped from the 140's to the 120's... lisinopril was the cause of my high bp!! The doctor did nothing until I pointed out my history of high bp over 3 year, and then did the wrong thing. Damm!!
I am 46. I have a desk job and sit most of the time. I do get on the treadmill for 30-40 minutes a day and an constantly busy on the weekends. A couple of years ago, I did start eating more (newly married, "happy" eating, I call it). I noticed I was putting on weight so I cut back. I'm eating about 1500 calories/day, still exercising, still gaining weight. It's coming on quickly now however. I was attributing it to not being, active enough, but I don't think so. I actually started gaining quickly when I started taking lisinopril. I'm taking myself off the meds and see where it takes me
Hows it going so far? Ive put on 20 lbs after 4 months after being the same weight for years and years.
I am 35yrs and have been on lisinopril for about a year, in that year I've gained 15lbs. I'm in my last semester of nursing school, so at first I attributed the weight to sitting & studying all the time. I'm walking everyday, But no matter how healthy I eat, I can't seem to drop any weight. Debating on calling my pcp and having them start me on something else.
Hi, I have been on Lisinopril for about a year. I have never had any other health issues, I am 5' and weighed 100 pounds for many years. Then after a few months of taking this medicine I noticed I was putting on weight! First, 5 pounds, then 10 then crept up to 15! I have been a vegetarian for many years and exercise regularly so could not understand what was happening. Such a frustrating experience when you try and fasten even your baggy pants and you can't!! I have never had a muffin top before but I sure do now and I hate it. I tried the hibiscus tea and made juices with beet and celery. Unfortunately for me it did not seem to help and my blood pressure was getting high again. I am back on it now but try to just take it every other day and am still taking hibiscus (I got the capsules because I couldn't stomach the tea) and drinking my veggie juices. I am going back to see my doctor in a couple of weeks to see if there is anything else I can do instead.
I don't like being on any medicine and the Lisinopril also gives me a terrible dry cough which I understand is a common side effect. But I am also scared about having dangerously high blood pressure!
Sorry if this is a bit long, it is good to get things off your chest sometimes :)
I have been taking Lisinipril for less than a month and have gained 11 pounds. I walk daily, maintain a fairly healthy diet and stay active... This is the third kind of BP medicine my Dr. has put me on and I am unwilling to continue gaining weight like this...
I'm really glad I found this post. I am 29 years old with HBP. I was put on 5 MG in October, and it wasn't bringing my BP down to where the doctor wanted it, so he increased the dose to 10 mg. I went and bought some more comfortable clothes, since mine were tight and not flattering at all. Those "fat" clothes are now too tight. I called my mom, because the BP is hereditary, and she said my dad blew up like a balloon when he started taking it too. I have been exercising, watching what I eat very carefully, drink tons of water, and I'm still just exhausted all day every day. I am a teacher, and when I get home, I feel like I'm going to pass out. On the weekends, I can fall asleep for hours at any time of the day. Nope, not going to happen anymore. I will find another way.
Just wanted to add to the many comments and concerns regarding Lisinopril, I have also experienced horrible weight gain along with depression due to my ever expanding waist line and the other side effects that go along with the drug. It is heartbreaking every time I would go to the doctors and I weigh in more each time. Have done a lot of research on Curcumin and have noticed my.pressure normal, I want to also stop this drug and see if I can drop the weight, however, it is one step at a time. Everyone, be careful and keep an eye always on your BP, extremely important.
I have gained 20 lbs on this as well. I am 43 years old.
It is getting to be a problem that I am not sure of finding a solution. I had stopped taking my bp medication because I was gaining weight and my doctor was just not finding me anything. This last week, after not taking the meds for 2 months I started to have mild headaches so went to ER and my bp was 186/** and I was told to start taking the meds again, yes of course. I don't know what I am going to do about this problem. I am totally discussed with the pharmaceutical companies. Perhaps the doctors hands are tied, so to speak.
Oh no! I, too, am gaining weight for no reason... The only change in my life is being diagnosed with HBP and given Lisinopril. All of my pants are tight after only a month and I REALLY watch my diet after losing weight at Jenny Craig several years ago. I don't know what to do. Considering a homeopathic physician.
I am SO grateful I found this thread. I have gained 10 pounds since starting this medicine a few months ago despite cutting WAY back on sugar and exercising more. (Although still not as much as I should! Lol.)I have started the hibiscus tea and after only 24 ounces in 36 hours I have lost a pound. I will be increasing the amount of tea per other posters' suggestions.
Did you stop the meds or are you taking them along with the tea?
I recently started Lisinopril 10 mg and have also had steady weight gain since I started taking this for my hypertension (along with a few other long time hypertension meds that I tolerate well). I am also concerned! I have gotten in touch with my doctor and am waiting to see what he recommends. I am 57 years old and am otherwise healthy. I try to walk at least 2 miles every day and watch my diet. I am going to wean myself off of this drug if I continue to gain weight. It's not worth the health risks of being overweight!
The problems with the drugs do not lie with the doctors, but with the medications available. It would seem that most of them have undesirable side effects that are not being addressed by the drug companies. My doctor put me on Amlodipine. The side effect was swollen feet and angles. Yup, with in a week that is what happen. I am no longer taking any blood pressure meds.
Yes. At my recent physical the nurse practitioner took my BP and said was way way too high (158/98). She started me on lisinopril 10 mgs right away despite it being my first time seeing her. I weighed 268 at the physical. I went back in a month and was 282 despite efforts to eat clean and work out 4-5x per week. I want to try a different medication, but she wants to give it another month. I'm really concerned I could be 300 by that time. And, my BP was only a tad lower, 155/96. Not worth it!
I've experienced the same issue.
Just ordered Hibiscus tea from Amazon.
Try and see an M.D. I have had some undesirable experiences with practitioners.
Hmm, I'm glad I found this sight. I started on Lisinopril in October. I have been working out like crazy and watching my food intake. My wife looked at me and said I was gaining weight. I was floored and decided to inbestigate. I believe the medicine is having a negative side effect of weight gain. I can't stand it so I'm going to watch salt intake and what I eat to ween myseld off of this medicine.
I had been on 5mcg of Lisinopril for a few months and in January ended up in the hospital with a heart block (they think was a result of thyroid issues) but after getting out of the hospital my doctor upped my does to 10mcg. In these past few months now I have noticed more weight gain even though I am on a 2000mg sodium diet daily. I am a very active 65 year old female that works 2 jobs, exercises 5 days a week, walks 1-2 miles daily to train station and only see my weight fluctuate by 1-2 pounds when I watch my carbs or the time of night I have dinner. I am so up for trying the hibiscus tea and weaning off these meds.
I started on this in April. But within a month, all of my pants are tight. I lost 40 pounds 6 years ago and I'm pretty good at keeping it off. But when I suddenly have tight clothes, I know something else is at work with my healthy eating habits. I'm really scared... because I don't want to be ugly... and I don't know how to deal with the high blood pressure.
I never experienced weight gain with Lisinopril only a dry cough that I was warned about. I switch to Lorastan in April and gained 11 lbs - in one month I gained 7lbs. This is ridiculous so I'm asking to be switched back to Lisinopril. I'll take a dry cough over 11 lbs any day.
I gained 35 lbs within a year of taking lisinopril - hctz 20 - 25! I am can't take it much longer the weight will not come off for 3 years! I eat 1200 - 1500 calories a day and stay physically active. I am really depressed and feel awful. The DR doesn't believe me! Is there a natural remedy that works?
I'm on 5mg and have gained a lot of weight fast.
I have also experienced weight gain since I started taking lisinopril (10 mg). My health care providers have not suspected this to be the cause of my weight gain. However, after 3 years of assistance by my doctor I have not experienced any weight loss, and it would now seem that I was just being pacified by them. Disgusting!! At times I feel like I don't eat enough to keep a bird alive. I have also tried a number of protein drinks and other things to try and rev up my metabolism without any results, and therefore, I am coming to the conclusion that there is something in this drug that is causing my weight gain and/or not allowing me lost any weight. I suspect it has something to do with slowing down my metabolism.
Twenty five years ago I had an experience with a drug I was on temporally were I gained a lot of weight, and it seemed that I could do nothing to stop this from happening. The drug had totally taken over my body. It was hell for three months until I was taken off the drug then my weight went back to normal. Research after being off the drug provided the answers. What a mess.
Yes, the same exact thing happened to me and now its hard to lose this weight. I literally blew up within 3 to six months this year when I started taking it.
I've been on a combination with hctz for 2 years and have gained 30 lbs. A few months ago I upped my exercise and stopped taking it for a week and lost 7 lbs. Every few months I notice a 10 lb weight gain. When I'm off it I usually feel "lighter," don't feel like I have to constantly drink water and it doesn't take me awhile to urinate.
I am 54 and was prescribed lisinopril 10mg. I gained 16lbs in 4 weeks. My BP was averaging 126/96. I am an active person, gym, love the outdoors. The weight gain was depressing me. I did some research for natural remedies for high bp. I stopped the meds, started making Hibiscus tea, at least 3 cups a day (Iake it like sweet tea but sweeten with honey). I lost 6 pounds in the first week and my BP is 110/79.
How do I make the hibiscus tea?
Lagrneyes - I'm in the boat as you are. Despite doing cardio, weight training and watching my diet, my weight is not budging, at all. I lost 40 pounds but I'm at a standstill and I think the culprit is lisinopril. I'm weaning myself off of this and doing what you're doing, the hibiscus tea, watching my salt, no processed foods like deli meat and I'm going to see what happens.
Sweetcar - this is how I make my hibiscus tea. I take three large bags (I buy mine online) and put them into filtered water (I use a mason jar (32 ounces) and let them steep overnight in the refrigerator. I don't put any sugar in it, I find it's better for me that way. I call it refrigerator tea as I like it cold. I have half of it for lunch and the rest for dinner.
I would never suggest that someone do this, and you did not, make the switch such as you have done, however, I am about to jump ship too. I am so tired of feeling depressed, fatigued and plump! and my BP is still a problem. Your only product: Hibiscus Tea? Brand? Thank you for sharing. Wow, I see now this was posted 2011. Are you still on this site? Any comments that might help us.
