I am currently in the process of trying to figure out if I have Severe Anxiety, Mood Disorder or Bipolar Disorder. The psychiatrist prescribed me gabapentin 100mg 3x daily. I stopped taking my Ativan b/c I didn't know if it was safe to mix and now my anxiety is through the roof. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO START RELIEVING ANXIETY AND STRESS?
I have had 5 doses so far and it has not done anything... I forgot to ask how long it would take to kick in and I dont want call because they charge for phone consults, the bastards... ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...

Your anxiety is probably through the roof now because you stopped Ativan, which is a strong benzos. How long did you take Ativan? I was on Ativan for 8 months and coming off of it was hell. You have to taper off of it.
They're getting ready to pull gabapentin off the market because people are abusing them they're taking like four and five at a time why I have no idea but I just heard that from my psychiatrist. I always thought gabapentin was for nerve rejuvenation
I'm older adult male. Gabapentin /Neurontin is amazing for my Anxiety and ADHD. I love it. (I also take 450mg x3 Lithium and 200mg Lamotrigine /day.)
My doc first put me on a high dose of 2400 mg/day Gabapentin. It took 3 weeks to kick in. I did not like this dose. (Also took away ALL Libido and gave severe ED probs.)
I went to lower dose of 600-900 mg /day. MUCH BETTER! ... Anxiety dropped. Stopped worrying and avoiding tasks. (Libido came back after a few weeks.)
Gabapentin makes noticeable difference for me and my Anxiety :-)
Hi Chris,
I've been on Gabapentin about 3 years, but i took it as needed pretty much, not every day. He just increased it to 300mg taken 3 times a day. That was a month ago... but I'm really afraid of withdrawal if i commit myself to it daily. I've been taking it every two days instead... but of course when i do that, i experience really down effects... high anxiety mostly, and just plain crappy. If i do commit to daily doses, I am also afraid that i will wear off as most every one says about it (tolerance). Did it wear off for you after a period of time?
If its not working for you then you should simply consult your doctor directly. They know better and can help your dilemma. Sounds to me like your getting to anxious and should try just simply giving yourself some time and taking a brake from all your
It should start working. Or feel some relief. N 2. To three days. That's. How long it took. Mine. 2 take effect. But it may just thats the way it works on different people 2 take effect. Everbody is different.
I was on gabapentin before and it also helps with anxeity , I started back on it, my anxeity is so better. Hang in there it will get so much better, faith first and everything else will fall in place.
You and I have major similarities. I take seroquel and lamotrigine for bipolar disorder, klonopin for an anxiety disorder and gabapentin for neuropathy (pain, tingling and numbness of my extremities due to pinched nerves in my spine). You are looking for a possible mood or bipolar disorder which take the same type medicine, which is not usually gabapentin. See this list:
https://www.drugs.com/condition/bipolar-disorder.html
You already know you have severe anxiety and need to be taking the Ativan or something similar. See this list:
https://www.drugs.com/condition/anxiety.html
It sounds like you didn't get clear instructions on how to take which meds before you left the Drs. office. Don't ever do that to yourself. It's too painful. If I was you I would take the Ativan. You might need to start at a lower dose than your last dose depending on how high that dose was. I'm saying ease into the Ativan but get yourself much more comfortable because the anxiety will just make you miserable and you have no clear instructions not to take it. You know the Ativan & gabapentin can be taken together from all the advice you've been given. I take them together per my Drs' orders. Klonopin is very similar to Ativan for our purposes.
Do NOT expect gabapentin to do Ativan's job. It can't in my experienced medical opinion unless, possibly, you are on much, much higher doses. Gabapentin IS on the list of drugs that may help with bipolar disorder. It's still a wait and see situation. You're on a low dose, a beginning dose, as someone has pointed out. If it helps you, it will be increased until the right dose for you is found.
Please don't ever stop a medication cold turkey without specific directions to do so from your Dr. Many meds must be tapered off to avoid undesirable side effects. Even if you don't remember getting instructions to taper off, it's a good safe policy to do it anyway and avoid problems. I hope you're feeling better very soon.
I take lamictal. That is used for both bipolar disorder and for seizures. I'm not sure that helps answer your question.
The lamictal is very helpful for your bipolar or mood disorder. I hope you're taking Ativan or something else prescribed by your Dr. for the anxiety. That's the main problem you wrote about. I hope you are more comfortable than when you 1st wrote regarding your anxiety.
I have taken gabapentin but there is no way that's going to help you with any kind of anxiety or panic disorder ,or bipolar, their is a couple of meds like one called buspar and one is called wellbutrin, these doesn't work for nerves, either you have to get on some kind of medicine like klonopin, or Xanax or valium,I have anxiety panic disorder plus some other issues like stuff with fear, the medicine I mentioned work's, You have to stay on which ever of these meds Your doctor put's you on for at least a month, So the doctor can get the strength right, Then the next month when you go to the doctor you can tell him/her how good it worked, then they will either raise the milogram or change it to some other kind of medicine, I hoped this helped You,,, bipolar medicine requires a different type of medicine good luck god bless you have a good day or night
I just wanted to say buspar worked amazingly fast for me. It works for panic attacks immed u atky. I'm perscribed to take it 3times daily, however I take it only when I'm having a panic attack and my symptoms subside within the hour. Currently weaning myself off clonzepam 1mg. I've been taking dise down with my doctor monthly. I'm curious about people's expieriance with Gabapentin,I'm bipolar but it's been perscribed for nerve pain... any comments?
I think gabapentin making me worse only started it on monday
Generally, it takes two weeks for the full effect of a med, but not sure about Gaba. I am concerned that you stopped the Ativan without a Dr consult. Frequently, just stopping a med abruptly can have adverse effects in and of itself. I suggest calling a pharmacist for these questions. I have repeatedly found them most helpful and knowledgeable. I've never spoken to a rude pharmacist, but if you get one that seems disinterested in your plight then call another one! Try calling a 24 hr pharmacy really late when they're not so busy. Hope you feel better soon! That is a miserable feeling!
You are absolutely correct about stopping meds abruptly, especially benzodiazepines! Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal are the only two that can be fatal in extreme cases. Common withdrawal from benzos are increased anxiety so ween yourself off or continue taking the ativan. Goodnluck and be careful.
Hi ever one. After 15 years on Ativan my doctor put me on nuerontin misspelled only because I lost my bottle of Ativan. Here in nj they are very strict. So I tool a pill last night and it was sort of ok then I took another one this morning. I actually thought I would be okay. But 2hours ago I suddenly got this burning feeling across my back down my arms very scary
Klonopin is an excellent anti-anxiety reliever.I've been taking it for many years,
just about less than a year ago I was given Gabapentin to help with an auto immune disease - PRURIGO NODULARIS. The Gabapen. is working helping it to stop the
intense itching - and clears up the sores - also use Cortisone cream and a
variety of creams. Klonopin works well with Gabapentin. Or you can go back on your ativan - but Klonopin is much better, and lasts in the blood stream longer.
I take other medications and they do not bother my using Gabapentin.
Good luck to you and God bless you.
Trish
Unless the Doctor said different you should still be taking the Ativan with the Gabapentin if im understanding you right. There is no interaction between the two they work together part of what you are feeling is very possible withdrawal of the ativan. And they are starting you on a very low dose of the Gabapentin so you should notice some improvement fairly soon and also follow Peppers post you should be feeling better soon.
Yes you can take Gababentin with Ativan and it helps it work better. Any medications that don't work togather your pharmacist will catch and let.you know. Also your Dr would not prescribe if they didn't work togather. Gababentin helps anxiety but you must take with other meds. It's a booster med. It has helped me a lot. So don't give up. I have had medication resistant depression. So I am on antidepressants and antianxiety (which goes hand and hand with depression )and other meds. It has taken literally 10 years to get my anxiety and depression in check. But I have never given up.
My stupid psychiatrist won't give me more than 10 klonopins a month. I love neurontin and it really helps if you also take 4 benadryls with it. If you have pain or problems with any muscle then take a Zanaflex as well. I used to use opioids yet i prefer gabapentin. It actually kicks in for my anxiety in around an hour. Keep taking it regularly and i guarrante it will get rid of nerve pain and anxiey in around a month: I use it for both pain and anxiety.
I've been taking Gabapentin since 2002, for a back injury and muscle spasms. I take 1800 mg a day. It helps a lot with the spasms and a little bit for the pain but has never done anything for my anxiety... of which I also have. I'm agoraphobic though, anxiety/panic attacks are a lot different, more intense, with agoraphobia than those with stress related anxiety. I was diagnosed with agoraphobia in 1983 and put on Xanax 0.5 mg 5x a day. After I got it under control and balanced, I was able to cut back on my doses. I still have my Xanax to this day but rarely need to take it... maybe one tablet a month. My phobia seems to have gone into remission but I still feel a tinge of it and never know when it will go into full panic mode. But, as I said about my Gabapentin, it's never alleviated my anxiety at all, it's basically only good for my back spasms and just a tad for my pain. I take Oxycodone 5 mg 4x a day for pain, and that barely helps. Gabapentin is a multi use drug which helps for a lot of things for many people... I'm not one of those people.
Also, I found that Xanax has been the only drug to work for my level of anxiety/panic attacks. Have tried, Ativan & Lorazepam but they do nothing. If you quit taking your Ativan without your doctor's permission, that was your first mistake. If you quit taking it abruptly, without weening yourself off, that was your second mistake. Always ask your physician before stopping or taking any kind of prescription drug or starting any kind of vitamin/herbal pills or diets, they could cause adverse effects with any prescription meds you are taking.
I'll second what Pepper said entirely.
As far as the Ativan, check with your Dr, but you may still be able to take it. My psych has me on 600mg of gabapentin 2x daily and klonopin 1mg 2x daily, which is similar to Ativan but longer-lasting. She considers this a safe combination for me, so your doctor may feel the same about your Ativan. Worst case scenario is generally excessive sedation, though it doesn't sound like the gabapentin is causing much sedation for you.
Matthews I totally understand through the roof. I felt like that the other day i was out of my gabapentin. When i did get them i felt 100% better. You first start taking it it usually takes a few weeks to get in you system. Try to hang in there. It does get better. If you fell like that again try breathing slowly. Splash you face with cold water. Take a walk or just get on here with us. We all understand what you're going through. Best of luck. Pepper
Its hard to wait for it to work i cant work do anythibg
I don't want to take it regularly because my headaches are not regularly (Gabapentin)..Every time I take it for my headache, it mostly goes away when I take 400mgs at once within an hour and a half..☺
They are getting ready to take gabapentin off the market. They say people abusing it.
