I was given Gabapentin after a stroke does anyone know why?

I am taking Gabapentin to help stop my legs from "jerking/jumping" at night so I can sleep. Evidently this is a common side effect after a stroke...
Probably because there is potential for seizures and they are preventing it. Seizures are often a problem after a stroke.
