What muscle relaxer helps with sciatica pain?
Hi Vicki,
Sciatica is nerve pain. It originates in the lower back compressing the sciatic nerve.
The meds specific for nerve pain are:
Gabapentin, Lyrica and Cymbalta.
If you are having muscle cramps or spasms in your lower back, a muscle relaxant like Flexeril may be useful.
You would benefit from physical therapy in addition to the medication.
They will teach you about using hot/cold packs and stretching exercises to release the nerve entrapment.
Seeing an orthopedist or pain specialist would probably provide the most assertive treatment.
Best wishes
:-)
Diazepam, Carbamazepine and Tizanidine. I have Cramp Fasiculation Syndrome. Veterans Adm. provides these. I have 4, 5.6, days a month that nothing seems to work.
Hi Hondo1: what is cramp Fasiculation Syndrome? I have never heard of this before. Please share!

I injured my L5S1 picking up a heavy floor jack at work. Had surgery 6 months ago, now im in worse pain. Gabapentin helps some, but side effects suck. Taking Norco, doesnt touch it, Soma doesnt
touch it, next stop will be oxycontin, but i hate pills. Not only did surgery make my pAin worse, but now i can no longer get an erection eithout pills. Dont have surgery, dont have surgery and dont have surgery. They will lie to you, endure the pain, its better than humiliation.
Flexeril, Vistaril, Soma are common muscle relaxants. Sciatic pain is horrible. Are you on any pain meds? How does your sciatic nerve pain occur once in a while or constantly?
It all depends on your body. If taking a medication for a day relieves your sciatica then you probably want a drug like Soma or other similar drugs. However if it takes a few days to relieve your sciatica once it acts up then you probably want to use Flexeril. Remember that Flexeril obtains it full potential after being taken straight for 3 to 4 days, but no more than 3 weeks straight. Also, Flexeril has fewer issues than the other drugs. I don't know how others feel about the medication but I can tell you from my experience that the round white pill does nothing for me. The round yellow pill works fine and the yellow home plate shaped pill is awesome. My best relief has come from taking Percocet or similar narcotic and Flexeril.
Dear knitter2b2003,
Everyone is so different when it comes to this. I take Robaxin and am very happy with it. I think it's an individual thing for people. Some works for some and some don't for others. You really just have to try them before you'll know. I took Zanaflex for a while and it was very effective but made me too drowsy during the day. Good luck, and best of luck to you. Ruth
I have sciatica and my doctor just prescribed me Robaxin 500 mg 3 times a day and prednisone 6 day pack. She also gave me a shot of Solumedrol in my hip. The pain did not go away completely last night but it was my first day so we will see. I did sleep better only waking at 3 am having trouble getting back to sleep due to a bit of pain coming through. but was not bad as it had been. I did get back to sleep eventually and slept until alarm at 6 am. this morning I feel ok but it is still a bit tender. I know it will take a little time to get this under control an fortunately doc gave me today off plus I have the weekend. I work in a factory and stand at a 6 foot table all day long so halfway through my day the pain gets quite unbearable. I really hope this helps. Good luck to everyone.
I often experience sciatica and my doctor generally prescribes tamadol. It works wonders, but I was on it for too long at one point and it is addicting.
I like Flexeril for sciatica pain myself. I am prescribed to take it 1 tablet 2 times a day as needed, but I don't take it unless I can't get other methods to calm it down first. Heating pad, oxycodone 15mg (other pain too)laying down etc... Hope this helps. Some like Skelaxin too or Soma, but I prefer the Flexeril... Mary
I am not a doctor but I can tell you from my experience that a ruptured disc at L5-S1 was pushing on a nerve which caused pain in my left leg through my butt cheek and pain all the way down to behind my left knee, then caused left side of my foot to being numb. Left untreated can cause nerve damage. I tried all of the over the counter meds I could find, but nothing helped. Have seen a doc or are you self diagnosing? You need a professional to help because problem could be from more than one area. I now take Oxycodone 10/325 3 times a day and get more relief than surgery ever gave me. I hope you find the answer to your problem. Good luck and take care.
Your question about muscle relaxer, I had less spasms with SOMA 350mg
I have seen three doctors they don't want to understand the pain that I am having and that it is getting worsted daily. Incurred a back injury from coughing. Numb both legs from top of thighs to the bottom of both feet. The whole torso area feels as if its rapped with a band. Severe pain and burning. I can't find any relief.
