My sense of smell has been going in and out for about 5 weeks. I am just piecing it together that it might be the Flonase (generic) I’ve been using for allergies. Today was the worst day yet. No smell at all. Not even strong perfumes... nothing. I googled “can Flonase damage sense of smell” and found this site. Now I’m in a panic. I’ll call an ENT tomorrow to make an appointment. And I’ll stop using Flonase. If anybody has any suggestions, I’d appreciate it. I’m so worried. I can’t imagine going through the rest of my life without smelling or tasting anything :(
This happened to me as well! I couldn’t smell anything! Relax. It comes back but it took me a looonnnggg time! Like 6 months to a year to be completely normal. Don’t use the spray again! I swear that’s what did it to me... try taking d- hist ! It swear that helped me! It loaded with vitamins that are good for your nasal passages! Give it a few weeks tho. Good luck and try not to worry! I got myself I to a pretty deep depression over this when it happened and I ran from doctor to doctor who gave me steroids and thought I was ridiculous in my accusations that the spray causes it. I still think it did. But thankfully, I healed and you will too! Just be patient.
I'm pretty upset, I have been using OTC Flonase for a few weeks and have lost my sense of smell and taste. How long does it take to come back??
I also have been using Flonase intermittently over many months. My sense of taste and smell are barely there. I am so disappointed that this drug may have done this to me and it may not be reversible. I will discontinue using this and hope I recover This needs to be made more public!
I had the same problem for anyone else wondering. Immediatly discontinue use of the product and you will regain your full sense of smell & taste within a week. It might take longer but it should definitely come back Flonase should acknowledge this problem on its labels or at least on its website! I stopped using flonase after this experience
I had sinus problems and stuffiness and went to an allergist this past April to get tested. I was not allergic to anything (nonallergic rhinitis) and he prescribed generic Flonase, which helped a lot. I only used it occasionally, but all smell and taste then disappeared. Because of that, I went to an ENT and was diagnosed with polyps and scheduled for surgery. So I thought the polyps was the cause of the loss of smell. Because of other problems, surgery was put off for a month. In the meantime, the ENT had me use the Neilmed nasal rinse followed by 2 sniffs of the Flonase per nostril TWICE a day. Wow. Had the surgery 2 weeks ago. During the days of recovery I only used the nasal rinse, no Flonase. My sense of smell and taste came back last week! Yay! But a few days ago, I got a little stuffy and used the Flonase for the first time since surgery. My sense of smell and taste is gone again. It can only be the Flonase.
I'll be quitting it and using nasal rinse only and hopefully it will come back. So frustrating. I'm glad I found this discussion. Tell your doctors, maybe word will get around.
I lost my sense of smell 3 days ago, I had cold (nasal congestion) which lasted for few days. I will see a doctor today, hope it resolves soon.
Hello so did you get your smell back did you did anything
I have no answer to this. All I know is that I took only one dosis of Flonase and my sense of smell is gone. I had no idea that this is so dangerous. Why there is no warning about it? I am looking forwards to hear any updates on this.
It took me months to restore my sense of smell. I used it 5-7 times. I used Nel Med Saline solution morning and night. I also smelled trained. I used mostly organic oils. You can look up smell training. I can now smell extremely well, my taste is still off, things taste distorted. Some days are much better than others when it comes to taste. I did go to an ENT, had CT scan and nothing was wrong. It was the Flonase. I have met several people with the same problem after using it. Don’t give up hope. Especially only using one dose. What I mentioned above helped me. Everyone is different.
I posted a previous answer... It was indeed the Flonase that damaged my taste and smell. Most taste issues will start to go away as your smell improves, so stay strong. Many of the ENT's that you will see will not understand this issue; therefore, be your OWN doctor. Theophylline did not make much of a difference for me. Order a NeilMed Nasal Rinse and D-Hist [the price of this lifesaver allergy supplement got expensive for a reason - it actually works]. My smell and taste continue to get slightly better each day. Do not give up hope, friends.
I did not use Flonase, however I did use nasacort for the past three days as I was very stuffy. Last night, I was so clogged up I couldn't breathe so applied it before bed and I did not use Flonase, however I did use nasacort for the past three days as I was very stuffy. Last night, I applied it before bed and this morning I could not smell my cologne. Thought it was weird so I put my nose directly against the spot on my wrist where I applied it to, still nothing. Normally, I could smell this from a little bit away. People in the train have coffee but I can't smell it, normally I could. I also always had a sharp sense of smell and taste so it is quite noticeable when things are missing.
I'm going to have to experiment more,l and see if I still can't smell strong things. I pray to God it's temporary. Will try the saline flush as suggested . morning I could not smell my cologne. For 3 years now I’ve lost my sense of smell and taste. I finally went to an allergist who looked up my nose and told my I have nasal polyps and that I need a CT scan. I got a CT scan to confirm that I have a bunch of nasal polyps. She recommended that I use fluticasone (which is another form of Flonase) for 6 months straight (it’s slowly working). Before that, I had a doctor tell me to use Flonase for 6 months straight without missing any doses (didn’t work at all). So maybe it’s not the Flonase that’s causing your loss of smell, it’s probably another underlying issue. Try seeing an ENT or an allergist to see if there’s something else you’re severely allergic to that’s causing you to lose your senses.
I have had some severe allergies in recent years.. so was recommended by an allergist to use Flonase on a regular basis to clear it up. It helped but then one day, it was like my nose stopped working. I mostly used the generic brand, as it has the same active ingredient as the name brand Flonase.
I found this page and am shocked that it isn't common news that losing your smell was a side effect.
Now I'm looking for anything that will help me restore my schnas .. and if there is ANY class action suit going on I really would like to join in.
After using Flonase (in its non-generic form) for the past six or seven months consecutively, once per day, my sense of smell has diminished significantly. I have stopped using Flonase for the past month; however, the road to re-gaining that sense will be long and arduous - no doubt about it. I have scheduled an appointment with an ENT Doctor who prescribes nasal theophylline to combat this issue and will update accordingly. In the meantime, I urge you to spread the word to as many people as you know about this dangerous side effect that the company so blatantly neglects to highlight. It shocks me that more doctors aren't aware of the issues that these products have. May God bless you all... and good luck.
This happened to me last spring (2018)... I had terrible cold, used afrin, then went to the doctor and they prescribed Flonase... after using it just once, I lost my sense of smell and taste! It was awful! I went to a million doctors and they all thought I was nuts... I suffered all summer and into the fall with it. I actually got really depressed and anxious cause of this..I kept thinking what if I never regain my senses. It gradually got better... it took a long time but yes, I recovered! I highly recommend d-hist! It’s an anti allergy holistic all natural... it’s very good for your cells of the sinus and nasal passages.. I feel like that helped me a lot! I wish you luck! It took almost a year for me though... we really need to file a class action suit against these drug makers! I will NEVER spray a damn thing up my nose again
Nor will I. To this day it’s been one year. I finally have turned around. I became very depressed and anxious .
I’m super depressed I used the non generic Flonase and I have. completely lost my smell and taste. I thought it was my anxiety and panic attacks but nooo I shoved ginger in my nose- nothing, garlic- nothing. I’m so scared my nerves are damaged and it will never return. I will try your recommendation but I’m so besides myself. Been crying myself to sleep every night.
I have just had the same experience. I used generic Flonase as prescribed. After three days I noticed a complete loss of my sense of smell. I will stop using this product immediately, and will follow up on this site if there is any improvement.
I pray there will be improvement. It takes time. It’s a scary road. My sense of smell came back better than ever. My sense of taste is almost hundred percent
this week. I think you will be just fine. I did smell training. It helped a great deal. Plus, a lot of prayers.
I suffered with a bad cold and allergies about two months ago. I went to the doctor and she prescribed OTC allergy medicine and she had previously prescribed Flonase.I didn’t use it the first time she prescribed it. She prescribed Flonase again. I told her I still had the Flonase from the last time. After two puffs I noticed later I couldn’t smell or taste. It’s been 2 months and I still can’t smell or taste. I am beginning to get anxiety and I am feeling depressed. I can taste sweet , sour , spicy and salty. I try to eat foods I can get some satisfaction from the taste. I cannot smell anything even if it’s right under my nose. I have seen an ENT and my CT scan was normal. I am praying that my taste and smell will soon return.
DO Doglife 6 Feb 2019
I used it in June 2017 around Seven Times. I lost all taste in smell. Then I used saline flushed everyday for around a month and a half plus smell therapy. I can say I have anacute sense of smell now. It recovered around two months ago. Thanks to praying to God. My sense of taste is coming back. Food still taste distorted at times. I have the best sense of taste with Organic Fruits and Vegetables. I pray will have a full recovery.
After finding this website and reading about so many people having lost their senses of taste and smell, I stopped using it immediately. My senses came back completely in three days. I now take Allegra 12-hr non-drowsy for allergies, and NeilMed Nasa Mist (it is just a safe saline spray). Good luck!! Very frightening proposition to lose smell and taste!! :(
It only took 3 days wow!
I lost my taste and smell about 1 year and 3 months ago. I had you Flonase. I had a CT scan and MRI and everything was normal . I just couldn’t smell or taste . The doctors told me my nerves were probably damaged and sometimes they’ll regenerate and maybe they won’t. Well , this July I was eating and I noticed I could taste . After I felt I could taste I tried lemon cake , ice tea , ginger ale and I could taste all of it. My smell is slowly getting better somethings I still can’t taste. I can’t smell foul smell (if my dog poops I can’t smell it). I’m beginning to smell and taste better every day . I can only thank God for healing. I prayed a lot and felt depressed and had anxiety. My taste and smell is not 100 percent but it’s a lot better. I also did smell training and other natural remedies. Thanks to God I’m better!
I have been using prescription Flonase for 2 months now for a horrific sinusitis issue two months ago. I then developed a URI a month later so still used the Flonase as I was still stuffy. URI cleared up but still stuffy which I attributed to springtime allergies. Now as of yesterday I have lost my sense of smell and taste. It is fleeting … but mostly in the evening. I have stopped using the Flonase as of today. Will I get my senses back? Count me in on any class action suit as I read everything on the Flonase website and it says nothing about losing one's sense of smell and taste. As a matter of fact, it states it is safe to use for long periods of time! ARGHHHH!!!
I am sorry to hear this has happened to you, and to all the other posters. A similar thing happened to me two months ago. I took Flonase to treat my seasonal allergies, and two weeks later my allergies were better but my sense of smell and taste were 90% gone. There has been no improvement since then. In the morning I can vaguely taste the flavor or my coffee, but it’s probably because I know I’m drinking coffee. If I eat sweets, I can tell it’s sweet, but have lost the ability to disseminate between tastes. This may be a dumb example, but all Starburst flavors now taste the same... sweet, but no flavor. The same is with ice cream, wine, salty snacks, soda... everything! I went to see my allergist about 6 weeks ago and she was quite skeptical about it, claiming that Flonase is often used to help improve the sense of taste/smell. The doctor thought it may be a symptom of GERD and put me on Nexium. That didn’t work.
Then I was prescribed 3 weeks of an antibiotic because she thought it could be a low-grade, lingering sinus infection. That hasn’t worked. My next option is a full head-scan to rule out a more dire diagnosis. I did try the turmeric, as suggested in an earlier post, but that didn’t work. For what it’s worth, don’t take turmeric and Nexium together.
I’m sorry that I don’t have a more optimistic response. The internet is loaded with posts about this, yet very few solutions. I really hope your situation improves!!
I used Flonase a couple of times in the past for a few days with no problems. I recently saw my doctor for sinusitis. He said to use Flonase again, so this time I did 2 sprays in each nostril one time a day for two days. I now have lost most of my sense of smell. When I try to smell a very strong essential oil like Eucalyptus or Wintergreen, I smell nothing. I am stopping the Flonase now in hopes of recovering my sense of smell. The Dr. suggested Flonase for inflammation and swelling over Prednisone since it would be targeting the direct area instead of the whole body. I agree with that, but had no idea I'd lose my sense of smell! I am wondering--what is smell therapy?
