I have stage 4 CKD and also have chronic nerve damage so I have lots of pain. I’ve been using fentanyl patches and oxycodone for years wanting to know if it interferes with my CKD?
Is fentanyl safe to use when you have CKD?

Best regards, masso
The experts say that fentanyl is metabolized by the liver and has been used with patients in renal failure. I was on the fentanyl patch for years and gradually maxed out the dosage. Eventually it no longer worked as my body got use to higher amounts. I would start having withdrawals the day before I was due to change the patch. My pain mngmt Dr had me begin changing them sooner, every 2 days instead of 3. That worked for a while and then the withdrawals started again. Be vigilant looking for those signs- sweating, hot/cold flashes, nausea, diarrhea, sleep disturbances. Fentanyl was created for hospice patients with no hope. It was never meant for living people not yet on their deathbed. I was lucky in that I do not have kidney disease and found other ways to manage my pain. Good luck to you!
