I suffer from OCD and have been taking Fluoxetine 40mg for a year with good results. My concern is that my alcohol intake may limit the benefits of the fluoxetine as I sometimes notice that after drinking I feel worse. My doctor has told me that as long as it is in moderation I can continue to take it, but I don't know how responsibly I am drinking. Thanks!
Can I drink alcohol while taking fluoxetine?

Answers
Hi, robox!
Since fluoxetine is an antidepressant and alcohol is a depressant it could affect the efficacy of the fluoxetine and cause unwanted side effects:
"Using FLUoxetine together with ethanol may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. "
An occasional drink or two may be okay depending on your tolerance but do it in a safe place and limit (or avoid) your alcohol consumption. This will also help the fluoxetine to do it's job properly.
