I also have take ir xanax for 10 yrs & it dnt work anymore it just helps me sleep A LITTLE & so they switched me to the 3 mg XR ... the bad thing about this is it only last about 6 hrs then at bedtime when I use to take my ir I have that no more & so I can't sleep at all .
Ask your Dr about Temazepam for sleep. I take the 2mg canal er, & the Temazepam is for sleep, nocks me out.
Sounds like you have severe anxiety and meds are not enough. You need a good psychologist to work through your problems. Get help instead of just taking more and more meds. If one doesn't help try someone else. A recommendation would be best.
I also have severe anxiety, however I have a more serious issue.. I have always struggled with anxiety.. Half my life I knew something wasnt quite right with me because I was so on edge, it ended up neing severe anxiety. I started taking Xanax and I felt like a new petson.. I've been on other prescription anxiety medication, but none of them worled, so I figured it wasnt anxiety, when it was. Anyway Ive been on it for several years that if for some reason Im having a bad month and I run out, my anxietgets so bad that I feel almost psychoathic, not literally, trying to prove a point that the xanax actually did something to my brain chemistry, that I get so deep into my thoughts that I think people think I'm a lunatic, why does xanax do this to people's brain chemistry.. I never ever was this bad with my anxiety, and Dont tell me to see a shrink or psychologist because theres no way I would be able to sit there and have an intelligent conversation for 5 minutes, let alone 45 min. What do I do if this should happen...
I am struggling heavily with this right now. it works but you become dependent on it. if u don't have it other medications such as ambience won't work
I've been on it a total of 21 years. Before that, I was so crippled with severe panic that I couldn't leave my home for 5 years. I couldn't answer the phone for fear someone might talk to me. Xanax not only brought me back to reality, but I've been a working functioning part of society. I can actually travel as well. This past spring I drove 800 miles alone to visit with an old friend and had a wonderful time. I guess you need to find what helps, and yes, sometimes it's a trade off. But I love my life now.

I have been suffering anxiety (GAD) for over 30 years. It is a chemical imbalance in my brain which can only be controlled with medications. I see a psychiatrist on a regular basis. I have no reason to be anxious, I have a wonderful family, I have a job, I'm no worried about money. The psychiatrist monitors my medications and says that psychotherapy would be of no benefit to me. The constant challenge which is very frustrating is that for no specific reason after awhile the meds stop working. And it becomes a constant juggling act of finding the right meds and the appropriate dosages.
The "XR"... stands for Extended Release. It basically means that instead of getting the full dose all at once, it's spread out over the course of several hours.
I would presume that Xanax XR would work better than Xanax IR ... IR stands for Immediate Release, wherein the active med is released into the system instantly.
However, please do check it with the doc who prescribed the med for accuracy of my answer.
Take care, best wishes!
I've been on XR since it came out, about 13 years ago. I find the XR lasts a min of 12 hours.
How many mg r you on
