I am taking Trileptal for mood stabilization for Bipolar Disorder. He claims it's the only mood stabilizer that doesn't cause weight gain. Has that been you experience on the drug?
Does Trileptal make you gain weight?

I took Keppra for seizures for 6 months with diarrhea and weight loss side effect. Lost 15lb over time. Switched to this one 2 months ago and I’ve gained 18lb. Neurologist will keep an eye on my weight now to see if it stabilizes or continues to climb.
I have taken Trileptal for 10 years – at 1200 mg/day – for my bipolar disorder, and it has never caused me to gain a single pound.
3 years ago my psychiatrist started switching me over from the Trileptal to Lamictal (I can’t for the life of me even remember why I agreed to the change, as Trileptal has always been a very effective mood stabilizer for me – I think my doctor just wanted to experiment with my drug cocktail), and I gained 70 pounds in the first 3 months I was on the Lamictal!
I have been on Trileptal for 4 years it has not been the cause of my weight gain. When my provider adds something else to it than I gain but, it has been good for me as someone said everyone is different like the Depakote I did not gain on it or Geodon but, had tardive dyskinesia so had to discontinue both.
I see your post is very old with no response. I’m so sorry for that.
Just recently I took it for 3 months and have 40 gross new pounds on me. Ugh. Psychiatrist just switched me back to Wellbutrin 150. 3xs a day with lorazepam 1mg each time and so far lost 4 lbs in 1 week. Appetite is getting back to normal eating. Lifesaver
Trileptal stunk for me. May work for
U. Good Luck.
Pippi4J, Everyone's body works different to medications. I would suggest that you give the medication at least a month to see what experience you have with it. If it turns out to be a bad one for you then you can discuss this with your provider and look for another medication to see how that one works. It's all a trail and error on these medications. Wishing you well.
I was on Trileptal for 3 months, and my weight didn't change.. I have tried almost all of the different mood stablizers and the only one that effected my weight was Depakote. I am a very slinder person, so it didn't really bother me with the weight gain... Hope the Trileptal works out for you. :)
Tripp2007, thanks so much for your reply, it was very helpful. I was on Geodone and gained 15lbs, I am hoping to loose some weight now being on the Trileptal.
Blessings,
