I've been taking 20 mg dicyclomine as needed but it does absolutely nothing for my diarrhea. Any recommendations?

I took it for 3 weeks & it didn’t help diarrhea, make it worse. Started having bad bloating, heartburn & just felt terrible. I talked to gastro (I’m new pt) & was told if I didn’t want to take it I’d have to wait for my scopes(another month away) unfortunately. My stools(less watery) & everything is better now without it. I’m dealing with flair up as best I can. Good luck.
Hi, I have the exact problem! What did you do at end? Are you still on medication what helped and what didn't? Thanks
Dicyclomine can be taken as needed or as a daily regimented medication. You'd probably do better taking it on a daily regimented basis. I used to have a real problem with diarrhea also, but when I started taking my dicyclomine on a regular 4 times a day schedule, that really helped. I would recommend that you talk to your Dr about getting on a regular daily dosage instead of as needed. I think you'll find that to be much more successful.
OK thanks. I have been taking it twice a day for 2 weeks. It helps with abdominal cramping but does not do a thing for my diarrhea.
Maybe you need to double your dose to make it work.
I do think you should talk to your Dr about increasing your dose to 4x daily. It does have a somewhat accumulative effect, so increasing your daily dose may take a couple weeks to be truly effective. You also need to watch your diet and tone down spices, acids while increasing your fiber intake should also help.
Well I don't have a doctor. A PA gave me the script for Dicyclomine in the ER and I don't eat spicy foods no dairy no acidic fruits either. Just been eating starchy foods and cooked veggies but not everyday. I tried not eating for a few days and only fluids to stay hydrated and took the Dicyclomine and still had diarrhea with gas. Where did the gas come from if I didn't eat for 3 days but having bm everyday ? The so called "professionals" at the ER claim there is no inflammation but my symptoms say bs on that.
Huckabee: I meant for you to take 2 pills at once instead of one. I wasn't talking about how many times a day you take it. Trust me, two pills at a time will stop your diarrhea. Nice to talk to your doctor, but you have to do something in the meantime to stop the diarrhea so that you can function on your job, or on your daily activities whether you have a job or not. I was so frustrated, didn't realize at first that lexapro was the cause of my diarrhea, but it was hampering me on my job. It was awful. Then I took 2 pills at a time and I was able to get through my shift without bathroom emergencies. Read the recommendations on the box. Its OTC, so it is not harmful. I hate to have to take any medications long term, so I took Imodium while I was getting started on my antidepressant. I didn't take it for a long period of time. You don't have to have a doctor's permission to take something OTC on a temporary basis. Just give it a try!
Oh OK you're talking about taking 2 tabs of Imodium. I thought you were saying to take a double dose of Dicyclomine. So you mean 2 tabs of Imodium. I'm assuming this is what you mean by OTC because Dicyclomine is not an OTC. You are talking about Imodium... right ?
Hi Huckabee:
So sorry - meanings can get confusing in written messages.
You are correct -- I did not mean to double up on dicyclomine. ( I don't know what your dose of dicyclomine is, but mine was 20mg. tablets when it was prescribed to me).
I DID mean this: to take 2 imodium tablets at a time, as one dose, to stop the diarrhea. I had to do that at work, to keep from having to make several trips to the restroom. I couldn't leave my post, so it was mandatory that I get my "problem" under control. So I would take 2 imodium tablets. Then I would take 2 more as necessary, even if it was a couple of hours later. I had to do this when I started my antidepressant. I needed the antidepressant, but I could not tolerate having multiple trips to the bathroom because of its side effect.
So, yes, 2 imodium tablets at each dose worked well for me.
OK. I read that if you have a history of liver disease to use caution. Although I don't have a history of liver disease I do currently have a high out of range bilirubin count and the idiots at the hospital say everything is good but that I need to see a GI specialist asap. Hospitals in our country are worthless. Nothing but contradictions and lies from so called " professionals ". Was your bilirubin high when you took the loperamide ?
Imodium works well (OTC)
Hi Huckabee: I found Imodium to be very beneficial to treat diarrhea. It is an over-the-counter medication. I've had a problem with diarrhea in the past, when starting a new antidepressant, and Imodium worked very well.
How fast does it work and how long does a dose usually last ?
It works right away, and I usually only had to take it one or two once a day. On other days, I might have to take 2 of them twice a day to counteract the side effects of lexapro, because I couldn't risk having an "accident" at work!
OK thanks. Diarrhea sucks !
