Hello.
I don't know what the "gold flakes" would be but I know what cough syrup(s) work for me and I have COPD.
The ONLY ones that work for me contains codeine but these types have to be used ONLY as needed and never take more than prescribed especially if you have a breathing problem or COPD as too much codeine might suppress breathing in excess with people with breathing problems to begin with so if you are such a person you must be stingy with the doses you take. In either case a health care professional should be consulted.
I use PROMETH/COD SYP 6.25-10 and NEVER take more than a small sip as needed, usually less than a sip every few days to weeks.
Best Regards

You should check back with the doctor who prescribe you the cough medicine a year ago. He/she should have a medical chart of your medical history.
