I've been on Contrave since the end of October. Nausea was a side effect at first but then went away. Now the nausea and headaches are back with a vengeance (I vomited yesterday) and I am starting to back off my dosage. Any tips from anyone re: nausea??? I am miserable but really, really want to continue on the medicine because it was working so well as first.

I’ve noticed that several people have mentioned Dramamine as a possible solution to the nausea side effect. This will not work. Dramamine will prevent nausea caused by motion sickness but will not treat drug-induced nausea.
Stay well hydrated and eat small, easily digestible meals. In the approval trials most nausea and vomiting subsided after 2 weeks; try to wait it out. You can try to drink ginger tea or take ginger capsules.
I’m on DAY 1. I vomited my breakfast up 2.5 hours after eating and taking one co trace pill. I had sweating that stopped after 2 hours, horrible dry mouth that stopped after 10 hours but slept for 6 hours after vomiting- had my dinner and still feel ill, dizzy and sick. I’m afraid to take a pill tomorrow.
I am on week three. Taking two in the morning is making me very nauseous- but one in afternoon is ok. Do u think I should back off - or how long does it take to adapt?
Contrave made me soooo sick -- the worst sickness I have ever felt!!! I have had some serious pain due to injuries and surgery etc., but NOTHING made me feel this bad as Contrave - OMG!!! After just taking one pill I was practically on the floor with severe headache (10x my normal migraines), uncontrollable dry heaving and vomiting, extreme dizziness (room spinning), the worst nausea I have ever experienced, and unable to sleep. I want to mention that I am in general good health and run about 20 miles a week. I am 25 lbs overweight so I was prescribed this crap to control my binge eating episodes. The worst part is I paid full price since my HMO would not cover it.
Is there anyway to get our money back? The Pharmacy does not give refunds due to policy so I am at a loss :(
Thanks!
I'm new to this forum and have found some very good tips for the nauseating/vomiting while taking Contrave and will get some Dramamine today. My question is does anyone take the adipex/phentermine along with the contrave? My Dr said that she wants to wein me off of the phentermine while taking the contrave so that my system will get acclimated to the contrave. I've been taking it two weeks now and have lost a total of 10 lbs but the nauseating feelings are driving me insane. I get car sick and I never get car sick.
I just started week 4 of contrave today. I always take my morning dose with food, evening dose I just take before bed. I haven't had any sleep problems, but do have nausea and headaches off and on. Also when I am eating a meal, the first few bites taste good and then they start making me queasy. Does anyone else have this? I haven't lost any weight yet. Anyone else have similar situation? When did you start to lose the weight?
I was given this tip by a friend that said it helps with morning sickness. It really works with the nausea caused by Contrave.
Take 10 to 25 mg of vitamin B-6 three times a day, every six to eight hours. Take 25 mg of Unisom SleepTabs once before bed.
For mild nausea without vomiting, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 25mg by mouth 3 times a day.
For moderate nausea with mild vomiting (≤ 2 times a day) or if no relief from Vitamin B6 alone, ADD Unisom (doxylamine) 12.5mg (1/2 tablet) by mouth at bedtime and continue Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 25mg by mouth 3 times a day.
If no relief after 4-5 days, try Unisom (doxylamine) 25mg by mouth at bedtime and 12.5mg (1/2 tablet) in the morning and in the midafternoon PLUS Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 25mg three times a day. May also increase Vitamin B6 to 50mg at bedtime with 25mg in morning and midafternoon if needed.
Unisom can cause drowsiness. Start with bedtime dose for 4-5 days first to decrease drowsiness then add as needed and as tolerated in morning and afternoon. NOTE: Bedtime dose helps with morning nausea, morning dose helps with afternoon nausea, and afternoon dose helps with evening nausea so adjust times for your particular needs.
Make sure you take Unisom (doxylamine). There are other Unisom that contain Dimenhydrinate. You don't want to use those.
I'm with you! It was crazy expensive for me to feeling like this. I've been on it for 6 weeks now. Have gotten great results. The nausea and headaches were terrible weeks 2&3 but came back worse this week. Ugh I feel like I'm pregnant all over again. I'm taking zofran every 6 hours and still feel like poop. Nausea for days is no bueno
Do you take your contrave with food - also what results have you been getting - I'm about to be on 4 weeks - 2 pills am and 2 pills pm - haven't had much weight loss and was wondering if it sets in in the 4th week? Thanks
I wish I had some answers. I'm a little upset with my doctor giving me an expensive prescription that I took one day and I cannot metabolize it well. I become soaked with perspiration on my face and neck and I never do that. I become very hot and flushed, dizzy, nauseated and it worries me. I can't work or function well for 70 days on these pills obviously. I read all the posts and everybody is becoming sick from the drug. Does anyone here know of another weight loss medication that actually works really well? It's too bad because Contrave really works but the side effects are so intense I can barely stand it. Good luck to everyone here working on it.
Try Medical Fit program... this program is expensive like the rest but I lost 30 pounds in 6 months. I thought that was awesome and its keeping it off... ugh!
Stop the pills and start a keto diet. No nausea, sweats, sickness. Contrave was an appetite suppressant with too many side effects and way too expensive. Keto helped me lose 51lbs in 4 months. The only side effect is getting through the sugar cravings. It's way cheaper than Contrave, too!
I am on 2nd week of contrave and now have eye pain and 2 like blisters on lids. Also headache on right side only . Want to stop but product working for now.
I'm curious if anyone has started this drug recently? I just started today. Been drinking lots of water, and making sure I eat something with Contrave. So far I just have the jitters. I didn't have a chance to work out today. So I think when I do that will subside. I'm having issues with sleeping tonight. That's why I'm here... So how often should I take the drenamin? Is this something I will have to take every night?
Thank you and good luck to all!!!
I started taking Contrave a week ago. I made it through a few days of unrelenting nausea, but the fatigue and dizziness have been horrible. The 2-5th days I was off work and slept most of those days. When I had to return to work, I was still just taking one tablet a day, but I can hardly keep focused at work and my 30 minute commute home is more and more dangerous as I can hardly keep my eyes open. I have notified my physician and am waiting to know what her recommendation will be. I can tell you that I did not take a pill today and the side effects continue, though not as intense...
I started contrave 10 days ago and I'm miserable. I stopped taking it today, and I'm so sick. Nausea, stomach pain and dry heaving. I keep my stomach full cause otherwise I feel even worse. I just want this out of my system asap. I'm drinking tons of water, took detox bath, but I know it will take some time. I wish I could of continued because it helped with cravings, but I can't function like this. Has anybody else quit? How long did it take to start feeling normal?
I'm on my third week of Contrave, I'm still only at 2 pills a day because they make me so sick I can't imagine taking 4 a day, which is where I should be. I am sick to my stomach, stomach cramps and headaches every day. I have tried eating with the pills, not eating, water, aleve etc... today I actually threw up and I have not lost a single pound. I plan to call my dr. in the a.m. but really want to quit taking them, which I hate because they are so expensive.
I was prescribed contrave last week, I took a dose on Thursday after eating 3 boiled eggs for the protein, and drank a bottle of water. All was well until about 9:30 am, I wasn't nauseous, but felt like I was so seasick I has to go home. I never go home! I took a nausea pill and slept for 4 hours got up, felt hungover, went to bed at 8 pm and slept 10 hours and still felt cruddy. I didn't take that dose and haven't since, because it freaked me out. I have to be able to function at work. My dilemma is I don't want to waste the $99 plus office visit I forked out and i am sick of being 212 pounds. Has anyone taken it at night instead of morning the first week and were you overly tired, too?
I’ve been on contrave for a week. I take two pills in am after breakfast. Nausea with me all day. Try to eat every two hours but tired n nausea is a real issue. Help!!!
I have been taking contravene for almost 4 weeks. Because my eating issues are mostly at night, I take my pills in the afternoon and evening. I'm still at 2 pills a day. 3 makes me very sick. I wake up feeling sick most mornings. Less so if I don't eat too much the night before. Some mornings I have vomited. Although because nothing in my stomach, nothing comes out. Only other barely tolerable symptom is constipation. I drink a ton of water every day. Always have. Have never been constipated before. I hoping if I get the constipation under control that the nausea will stop as well.
I want to say to us all. Keep trying. It is a long process but worth the effort. Be proud and keep trying. We can all achieve our goals.
I have total empathy. The first two days of taking the medication, I was so miserable specially at night even I was taking it in the morning. The headache kept me in bed moaning out of pain. I used Bonnine Which helped so much. I couldn't make the headache go away.out of depression I started tapping. It did miracle. The headache ended in 30 seconds after tapping. I hope this can help.
What is tapping?
I actually had to stop a few weeks in. It was the same for me. Felt like a stomach virus two weekends in a row. It was unbearable and not worth it in my opinion. My Dr. Switched me to Belviq. I'll see how that goes.
Omg thank you so much to all of you ladies for giving so much feedback I suffer from chronic migraines and my medication has made me put on a lot of weight so in addition I asked my doctor if there was anything that could help kickstart me to drop some of the weight I am two weeks in with contrave and until I saw these post I could not understand why my migraine medication was not helping and why I was feeling so nauseous lately when that's the one side effect I have never felt from my migraines I really thought that something else had gone horribly wrong, I am so grateful because I know exactly why I have been so miserable these past two weeks again thank you all so much
