Clonazepam - Do I really need an SSRI with a benzo?

Benzodiazepines do help with GAD, panic attacks etc. they work remarkably well for a while. Unfortunately 50 years of research shows how dangerous they can be as they cause dependence and tolerance. For some people it may only take a few weeks and they are unable to wean themselves off of benzodiazepines afterwards because each attempt to reduce their dosage causes withdrawal symptoms. The clonazepam container has a warning on it (at least in the US), it says FEAR. You would interpret that as a side effect that you need to be aware of. As others commented, you got your prescription for clonazepam to help you through getting on your SSRI medication to help with your initial side effects caused by the SSRI.

It’s completely safe and effective to take SSRI with benzodiazepines. However, benzodiazepines should be taken short term and not long term. Doctors usually prescribe benzo with SSRI, because SSRI tend to increase anxiety during the first few days and weeks.
