Does CARBAMAZEPINE PUT YOU TO SLEEP? I NEED TO SLEEP, I HAVEN'T BEEN SLEEPING FOR 4 NIGHTS. I AM BIPOLAR AND IT WAS PRESCRIBED TO ME BY MY PSYCHIATRIST. I ONLY USED IT ONCE BECAUSE I CAN'T CONTROL MY MOVEMENT. I WAS WALKING FROM MY PATIO TO MY LIVING ROOM AND I KEPT ON WALKING UNTIL I WAS SLAMMED AGAINST THE WALL. MY BRAINS TELL ME TO STOP BUT I CAN'T CONTROL MY BODY. PLEASE REPLY. CC HOPPER

Celia; Because you had such a bad reaction to the drug the first time you should talk to your doctor, There are alot of things that wont do this to you and help you sleep. You don't know how it well react to you if you tried it to sleep, You could get up in the middle of the night and have problems please check with your doctor first.
Hi, celia! No, Tegretol does nor ordinarily make people sleepy because technically it is in a class of anticonvulsants commonly prescribed off-label to control mood.
I agree and hope that you have been able to consult with your physician about this sleeplessness you're experiencing as for me this is always a precursor to a manic episode. Fortunately, with the right medication these episodes are brief and manageable.
Good luck and best wishes, WCV
As already stated, you should consult your pharmacist and/or doctor about both your sleeplessness and how you should expect carbamazepine to affect you.
That said, carbamazepine does have a sleepy impact on me. When I first started taking it for Trigeminal Neuralgia, I was on a high dose because docs didn't know how much would be needed to get the pain under control. I was taking five 200mg tabs per day. I could hardly stay awake.
Slowly I weaned off of it as I got brave enough, and learned I didn't need nearly so much. Now I take 1 tab one day, 2 tabs the next, and alternating from there. It might have a slight sleep impact on me at that dosage, but I'm not aware of it.
Good luck.

First, as always, ask your doctor and your pharmacist. Pharmacist's have immense knowledge and experience they are happy to share. Carbamazepine does not make me sleepy. What does concern me is four sleepless nights for a bi-polar. This can be one of the indications of an impending manic episode; as I said "can be". Consult your psychiatrist ASAP regarding this possible precursor.
